dbForge Studio for MySQL

In my experience dbForge is easily better than most of other db clients on Windows OS. I don't use all of it's functionalities, but the once I need and use are usually pretty stable and straightforward. There is however still a lot to improve in my opinion: the interface could use a more modern look and feel, I really miss the server stats and running queries info, batch executions on multiple databases would be awesome and if the typing predictions would be less buggy for users like us who have multiple server connections running at once, it would make work a little bit easier and faster.

If you are doing any C#/VB windows applications, you cannot go wrong with Visual Studio. If you are making a desktop application with forms, the designers will be required to get your app looking great.
If you are living in the web development space, you may want to consider something else for the JavaScript/HTML/CSS work. Visual Studio Code does well, but we've recently found WebStorm by JetBrains that works IMMENSELY better for intellisense.

Pros

dbForge Studio for MySQL

  • dbForge Studio for MySQL worked perfectly well for a database administrator. The UI is very friendly and I was able to improve all tasks regarding my job, manage user privileges, table maintenance, server sessions etc.
  • The query development really improved with dbForge Studio for MySQL. All of the developer team had a much easier way to develop all the queries that were used inside the systems. The Visual Query Builder improved the performance and quality of the queries made by the developers and programmers.
  • The database designer brought to us a totally different vision of the database model. Before dbForge Studio for MySQL the database model was completely lost and corrupted. With dbForge Studio for MySQL we were able to put all objects together in a organized way. All of the IT department members knew where each table was connected to, and everybody was able to access the model before starting the development, reducing the inconsistencies of the company systems, and as a consequence we reduced the costs of development.

Visual Studio IDE

  • Ability to add plug-ins that support non-Microsoft solutions (such as PHP and Python).
  • Power to organize and support even large enterprise applications.
  • Well-structured. The built-in organization of VS makes it easy to keep track of complex projects.
  • Intuitive. The controls in VS are easy to find and use.

Cons

dbForge Studio for MySQL

  • I use dbForge Studio for MySQL in a limited environment - an online store hosted by Bigcommerce - so I don't see anything that cries out for improvement. It might be different if I was juggling multiple databases in an enterprise environment spread out over the Internet, but for what I need, dbForge Studio for MySQL does the job perfectly.

Visual Studio IDE

  • The updates are breaking sometimes VS permissions. I have set VS to run as administrator, but sometimes after an update, I need to go to executable file and set it again.
  • VS 2017 does not work well sometimes with the MVC 4 applications. It is showing (underlining) errors in code viewer where the errors do not exist. The VS team was not able to fix this.
  • There is no good plugin for SASS compilation and Workbench (available only up to version 2015) does not work very well.
  • VS could be faster, especially when building applications.

VS is the best and is required for building Microsoft applications. The quality and usefulness of the product far out-weight the licensing costs associated with it.

The thing I like the most is Visual Studio doesn't suffer from Microsoft's over eager marketing department who feel they need to redesign the UI (think Office and windows) which forces users to loose large amounts of productivity having to learn software that they had previously known.

Between online forums like StackOverflow, online documentation, MSDN forums, and the customer support options, I find it very easy to get support for Visual Studio IDE when I need it. If desired, one can also download the MSDN documentation about the IDE and have it readily available for any support needs.

Alternatives Considered

dbForge Studio for MySQL

  • Much more stable than MySQL WorkBench
  • Has the power tools a db designer wishes for but lacks in free clients like HeidiSQL
  • Is being improved regularly
  • Is fairly well supported

Visual Studio IDE

I used Eclipse and NetBeans when working as a Java developer. Both IDEs are inferior developer experiences with slower performance and downright chaotic user-interfaces. If the nature of the project would allow adoption of Visual Studio over these alternatives, I would highly recommend Visual Studio. While not an option on the products list, I also used XCode for building native iOS apps for iPhone and iPad. XCode is a lot simpler to use, but also has a lot fewer features. Visual Studio is not usually a valid alternative to XCode, so in this case, it's hard to make an apples-to-apples comparison.

Visual Studio IDE

  • Very flexible pricing schemas for licensing allows us to focus on solution development instead of development cost.
  • The integration of tools in a single IDE is better for estimating the budget because it is not necessary to have other licenses.
  • Improves the speed of the development process so the ROI can be faster.
