dbForge Studio for PostgreSQL

This is completely dependent on job function. If you need to just view/edit data, then this tool is hands down the most intuitive and easy to use for that purpose. Our support team will greatly benefit from the ease of use for sorting, filtering, and viewing data. However, for a development role it would be better to select a different tool unless, of course, that developer was trying to find data issues or see what the data looks like after operations have run.

SQL Developer

Oracle SQL Developer is well-suited for all companies that are using Oracle SQL Databases. First and foremost, it is absolutely free, and there are many free in-depth tutorials and documentation online to answer all of your questions. No matter the amount of experience, I am sure all database administrators will be able to work much more productively with their organization's databases through this IDE.

Pros

dbForge Studio for PostgreSQL

  • Intellisense is rock solid.
  • Sorting, filtering, and grouping are super easy by just using the grid columns. No having to write queries!
  • UI is super intuitive.
  • There is a master-child detail designer where you drop tables into the designer, link up their relationships (whether there are foreign keys or not), and then you can view the linked data.

SQL Developer

  • Export SQL results to a spreadsheet. After a query is run, you are able to export the results to a spreadsheet
  • Easily preview data columns on an Oracle table or view and the metadata on those columns.
  • SQL Editor is color-coded so that you can tell easily what are keywords.
  • You can set up SQL code templates to be able to use shortcut keys to format your SQL query easily in a readable format that you prefer.

Cons

dbForge Studio for PostgreSQL

  • No table/database designers (yet). They have said it's coming.
  • No way to create scripts to create the database/tables that other tools have. This makes it difficult for developers to use to generate DDL scripts.
  • Data export does an individual insert per row of data, which is a little inefficient. Other tools will do a single insert for a configurable amount of rows per insert statement.

SQL Developer

  • Setup can be challenging if your schemas aren't well formed or managed. Also, the ability to model/develop extensions for an existing database solution will depend on how robust the DBA provisioned roles and designed the respective schemas.
  • Detailed analysis of models can be clunky for complex relational models.

Alternatives Considered

dbForge Studio for PostgreSQL

While DBeaver ended up being the goto for our development team, everyone else is going to be using dbForge Studio. The UI was hands down much easier to get used to, and the sorting/filtering options make it super easy for anyone to view the data the way they needed it. You don't need SQL query knowledge to use this product. DBeaver DOES have a master detail type data view buried into some right click menus, however, you can't just link up a bunch of tables and see/scroll through master records and have all the child tables update. It's useful, but not as useful as dbForge Studio.Valentina was just way too hard for people to navigate and use on a daily basis.

SQL Developer

Toad and SQL developer are often compared and we considered both at the beginning. Arguably, Toad outperforms SQL developer in terms of many functionalities. The biggest reason we encouraged our engineers to use SQL developer was cost. Although it is not enriched like Toad, it is still a very well functioning and supported product.

Return on Investment

dbForge Studio for PostgreSQL

  • Saved a TON of time when looking at massive amounts of parent/child data by allowing us to just use the master-detail browser.
  • Very little training time needed for employees that are already used to using SQL Management Studio. This is a proper Windows UI application.
  • Very cost effective to purchase the standard edition for every employee that needs it, but the free edition does most of what they need too!

SQL Developer

  • SQL Developer is a free tool that comes with the licenses of Oracle Database, so it's quite inappropriate to talk about ROI of this software itself.
  • SQL Developer is not a "you get what you pay for" product. Using it can cut out an entire line from your budget, so there is no comparison in that regard. We now only buy a few licenses for other similar tools and only when the user can prove SQL Developer doesn't meet the need.
  • In some cases, new programmers come in that are not familiar with SQL Developer. People tend to like what is familiar, so there is some initial time spent learning the tool. But that is balanced out because it really is pretty intuitive.
