Dell Boomi

Dell Boomi is well suited for integrating between ERP systems, especially Netsuite, SAP, Salesforce. Built in access to platform API, Auth to API, access to data or triggers/actions, etc. speeds delivery. There are many connectors available making this process faster. It is best suited to an organization that needs to rapidly roll out new integrations or changes on a regular basis. It's less well suited when larges amounts of data need to be processed very quickly in a parallel method. It's possible to handle things in parallel, but because of the workflow connectors and design process you are much more likely to build something that is handling one record at a time sequentially instead of building a process that is processing hundreds of records simultaneously for real time processing. It's also less well suited where complex code is the common path for integration as it does not connect to source control and common software development processes for managing code/test/deploy. (Those things can be used, but it requires additional effort to manage.)

Tableau Server

Tableau Server is extremely well suited for a company with a few dedicated analysts creating dashboards and reports for a few stakeholders. It is also great at handling a large amount of report viewers, but it is more expensive because you have to pay for each user.

Pros

Dell Boomi

  • Pre-built connectors to almost anything which greatly reduce time to release of your integration needs.
  • Easy to use development platform with drag&drop features. Non-technical people could build simple integration processes in no time.
  • Great user community where you can get quick help if needed. Boomi people hang around there a lot.

Tableau Server

  • Tableau server's portal and general look is really convenient and pretty. Users feel comfortable using it.
  • The learning curve of Tableau Server from an end-user perspective is really short. For the creator of content, it is a little more complex but easy to learn. Tableau has really succeeded in creating a user-friendly software.
  • From an administration point of view, Tableau is great. Installation and housekeeping are really easy and quick.
  • Visuals are really appealing and will help "sell" your presentations.
  • Tableau allows connectivity to a huge selection of data sources and data formats.
  • Online training for software is free and of very good quality.

Cons

Dell Boomi

  • The dashboards are limited
  • Running Low latency improves performance but makes resolving issues very difficult
  • Unable to sign up for alerts for one process only. Alerts go out at an account level. If you want to get notifications for a process you need to build it into your application.
  • The folder structure of components can get messy if not well governed.
  • Easy to create duplicate components and not realizing that someone else in your company already created one.
  • Scripting could be improved. You don't know if you have errors in your code until you run the process.

Tableau Server

  • Tableau Server is sometimes referred to as simply Microsoft Excel with a power boost. I understand the reason analysts say this. It is because the software is almost exclusively a visualization software. If you're looking for truly advanced analytics combined with cutting-edge visualization, Tableau Server isn't it.
  • Tableau Server limits the type of graphs a user can create. There are numerous workarounds for different graph types, but they are not easy to implement.
  • Tableau Server can sometimes be slow to render graphics with lots of data and calculated fields.

Dell Boomi has provided us with the ability to connect our campus together using our various existing platforms. There are many supported features and have yet to run into something that we cannot do. Its user interface is very intuitive which would allow users to begin developing fairly easily. There is a myriad of resources available

We will continue our use of Tableau server due to the following factors:- Cost effectiveness. This persists from year-to-year. Tableau consistently gives us the best value for the cost- Reliability. Tableau server has been rock-solid for our users, particularly during emergencies.- Innovation. You can bet that Tableau will release stable new versions on a regular basis. We have often experienced the need for a function in Tableau that will be included in a future release.

User experience is the most important factor to consider whenever considering capabilities for non-technical business users. If the learning curve is so steep business users must be advanced users to be productive, you hit the wall of diminishing returns, this is exceptionally true when it comes to analyzing data. Transforming data analysts into BI development experts shifts the focus of the analyst from analyzing data to mastering software. Tableau does a masterful job at minimizing the technology and maximizing the users understanding of their data.

The atom sphere takes a time to load, when I open a process or when I open a log. One more slow processing is when I import objects from NetSuite.
About the performance of processing, it looks like Boomi takes a time to initialize some things such as connectors before starting the process. This is also performance we have.

While there are definitely cases where a user can do things that will make a particular worksheet or dashboard run slowly, overall the performance is extremely fast. The user experience of exploratory analysis particularly shines, there's nothing out there with the polish of Tableau.

Boomi support was responsive and knowledgable, however being a closed cloud service, it doesn't have good community support. We found the learning curve to be steep and there aren't avenues like google, forums, or blogs that provide community driven insight into the product or how to go about designing solutions using the tool

I think the folks that work in support are generally pretty good at what they do (when you get them on a WebEx). But the process of reporting issues to them and waiting for a response (via email only) is a hassle. I never understood why you can't just call them up and discuss the issues with them. It would take a handful of email exchanges before they would agree to a WebEx session. That was frustrating.

In our case, they hired a private third party consultant to train our dept. It was extremely boring and felt like it dragged on. Everything I learned was self taught so I was not really paying attention. But I do think that you can easily spend a week on the tool and go over every nook and cranny. We only had the consultant in for a day or two.

My department was largely Excel and paper-based when I started, so there's been a tremendous amount of work to get the data into shape, so when I look at the overall implementation of our visualization and reporting infrastructure, I'm less satisfied. Tableau has been wonderful, the one place that would get me to a 10 is if it was easier to tune workbook performance on Tableau Server, there are a huge number of variables to deal with across the workbook/application/hardware stack. In a small environment like ours that takes more effort than I'd like.

Alternatives Considered

Our team has used Actian DataConnect since the Mid 1990's. It was formerly known as Data Junction and then Pervasive Data Integrator. We looked at Boomi as an additional tool to aid in our Integrations. We did compare it to Informatica and thought it was a better fit for our customers.

We have been using Boomi and doing great. I like the way we can break down data into small units of work. It simplifies how to handle multi-conditional pathing and the unit of work level.

Currently, I am working at SFCG, using various tools to build integrations into Oracle CX products. When we started kicking the tires on Boomi and in the training and development since that time, I've tried a series of processes out that have given me trouble in other tools. Below is a brief recap of my experience and growing admiration for the way in which this tool has made my job easier.

My first goal with using Boomi was to connect to an instance of CRM On-Demand (a task that can on other platforms be a time-consuming endeavor). What I found was a useful wizard, pictured below, with a series of pop-up steps to follow.
In other tools, I have spent more time in trying to define the schemas, than actually completing the maps that use them. Boomi reduced that time from my process. This is one small example of many demonstrating how my teammates and I feel as if we were working in black and white and are now working in color with Boomi AtomSphere. Tasks I've taken for granted are complex, time-consuming and meticulous are simplified, streamlined and transformed with powerful features like Boomi Suggest - a handy feature that leverages the collective intelligence of the Boomi community to suggest which fields should be mapped in a Data Map.

You don't need to take my word for it, another member of our team, Li Mo started building out an integration to Oracle Sales Cloud, using the SOAP API Connector. He was able to do a complete integration to insert a record into the Account entity, and it took about an hour and a half.

Note: it had been about 1 month since we both actually took the training courses. I believe we choose an additional tool that plays to the inner strengths of working in the cloud, and I can not wait until I start full blown to continue development on new integration projects using Dell Boomi AtomSphere.

Recommendations to other buyers: Try it to see if it fits your needs.

There were a lot of reasons why we chose Tableau and the least is the cost but also the way Tableau stores data in the columnar fashion instead of in Cubes. We went through a painstaking selection process and at the end, came down to a couple of vendors and we ended up with the product that was least to pair up with Amazon Web Services to create a decent and cost-effective proof of concept and we landed with the solution we have today.

  • It has allowed us to scale significantly without having to add headcount, specifically those geared towards data entry. We went from a $10m ARR business to $200m ARR business with the same amount of Order Processors and 12x amount of transactions by leveraging Boomi to perform a lot of the work, and then having the Order Processing team to simply review that the transaction was processed successfully.
