Dell EMC Avamar

Avamar is not a bad product. It is just no longer competitive in features, support or upgradability. It does work and what it does it does well. It has just not evolved and as a result, it is beginning to feel the effects of natural selection.
If you have Avamar, you don't need to hurry up and replace it. It will keep doing what it does and is doing it well. Its best use-case is holding its current place until you can perform a thorough search to find something better.

AppAssure works well for quick access to point in time backups of Windows machines without having to do a complete restore. The virtual standby function is useful as a disaster recovery or high availability solution. Recent upgrades to the product and rebranding to Rapid Recovery look promising. If your Linux machines are mission [critical] make sure your administrators test restores so they can perform them in a timely manner should the need arise.

Pros

Dell EMC Avamar

  • Data compression/deduplication across all backup targets.
  • Extremely quick at recovering data.
  • Low overhead on the network.
  • Low overhead on the host.
  • It's supported all of our various platforms.

Quest Rapid Recovery

  • Continuous backup with deduplication and compression
  • The P to V function of the software is create. To be able to back up physical machines and create a hot spare on a virtual environment was a great selling point.
  • Can back up physical and virtual (ESX or Hyper-V).

Cons

Dell EMC Avamar

  • Less complex setup
  • Integration with VMware needs some attention

Quest Rapid Recovery

  • The GUI and response times are far too slow. It would be nice if this could be improved.
  • Currently you can set a blanket retention policy for all protected machines. It would be great if this could get more granular and can do protection groups of machines where you can custom set retention policy
  • Once again, policies where you can set backup times for groups rather than individual machines would be great.

I have been using the product for over five years. This has performed so well that with the current system reaching its End-of-Life with EMC next year, I have proposed replacing it with the latest version of the product. Now that it integrates with Data Domain, the cost has been greatly reduced. Instead of the need to purchase many nodes, one Data Domain can replace them creating a significant cost savings.

Our initial installation really was not optimum. With the help from Dell Profession Services we were able to get our implementation sized correctly and better understand how to get better deduplication results

Reliability. Avamar is hands down more reliable than any other backup solution I have used.

Anything is better than Backup Exec. I believe Veeam is a far superior product in backing up VMs. Veeam does not have any agents that get installed on servers which is always a plus. It also connects directly to vCenter.CommVault to me is the ultimate solution. The ability to backup physical, VMs, SQL, exchange, applications, and even do E-Discovery make it the ultimate backup suite. If you are looking at a backup suite package to cover all your needs, i think with CommVault you need not look any further.

Return on Investment

Dell EMC Avamar

  • Avamar shrank my backup window from 5 days to 12 hours.

Quest Rapid Recovery

  • The compression and dedupe have been great. We are able to back up 10 VMs on only a 2 TB repository. We take differentials every 15 minutes and have held on to backup data for the past 3 years.
  • The pricing of AppAssure is very competitive to the market. However, now that enterprise level backup is more of a commodity, the view of looking at AppAssure should be the Dell backup suite as whole, rather than AppAssure itself.
  • Fast recovery and mount points.
