Dell EMC Networker

Networker is only suited for one thing: being a front end for good hardware. We love our Data Domains, the dedupe is insane and they ingest data rapidly. You'd be better off using Veeam, which can talk to the Data Domains natively (that's what we're doing now).

Veeam Backup & Replication

I cannot recommend Veeam enough. In place of backup exec, we have seen a customers job success ratios rise from 60% to over 90% in a week. It is so much more reliable and clearly a better suited product to the workload. I have yet to deploy Veeam into an environment and it not be appropriate

Pros

Dell EMC Networker

  • When used with a Data Domain appliance, using either DDBOOST or a VTL, it is quick and does a wonderful job of deduplication. We have 2.3 PB stored on a 140 TB DD 4500. While this is expensive storage, the cost for 2+ PB would be even higher.
  • It does a good job of brick-level backups of Exchange mailboxes, and does so in very good time. A few hours backs up our entire organizations mailbox stores in a way that provides object level restore.
  • Used in combination with DPA (Data Protection Advisor), it has a very good reporting capability. DPA, however, requires more than just surface knowledge in order to get really good reports, and the DDOS changes can wreck havoc with customized reports.

Veeam Backup & Replication

  • It is very fast. Disk-to-disk backup is extremely fast.
  • Veeam is easy to use. Even someone who hasn't used it before can figure out how to restore a file in a few minutes.
  • It uses a standard filesystem style hierarchy for file retrieval, which makes it very efficient when searching for a single file to restore.

Cons

Dell EMC Networker

  • Networker's customer service could use a bit of improvement. While some problems are handled quickly, complex issues sometimes have limited responses with difficulty to escalate up the chain.
  • Networker prior to version 9 is using outdated policy configuration which tends to make some backup windows and obligations awkward.
  • Networker needs a bit better method for accommodating plugin integration with other applications, and better documentation on implementation of those modules.

Veeam Backup & Replication

  • Errors are often difficult to diagnose with complex error messages that don't mean much.
  • Software updates often cause other issues with storage hardware which then require firmware updates.
  • Reporting could be better. We currently use a 3rd party tool to report as the built-in reporting doesn't seem to be too good.

Likelihood to Renew

There are three reasons for not renewing our use of NetWorker: 1) the rising and extremely high cost of support and proprietary hardware needed for deduplication, 2) the complete unreliability of the product (we couldn't recover from a true disaster if we wanted to), and 3) the horrible support from EMC for the product

I really have no complaints about Veeam Backup & Replication. Their service has been excellent and the cost is minimal in comparison to other services I checked out. Implementation wasn't simple and the Veeam Support team was there to help each step of the way.

Use this, and then use Veeam. Or literally just about anything else. It's a powerful engine with a crappy paint job and a rusty frame.

We've been using Veeam Backup & Replication for several years in our
organization, and we perform backups in all of our environments every
night. It’s one of the simplest yet effective and reliable solutions in
the market for the backup segment. You can check out the free Veeam
agent, so you can get an idea of the full product.

The Veeam Backup & Replication solution is up and running every time you need it as it was planned. In more than 3 years that we have been using the product every night, it might have failed or presented an error once or twice, so the availability percentage is almost at 100%.

To identify a bottleneck in the data path, Veeam Backup & Replication
detects the component with the maximum workload, the component
that works for the most time of the job. For example, you use a
low-speed storage device as the backup repository. Even if VM data is
retrieved from the SAN storage on the source side and transported over a
high-speed link, VM data flow will still be impaired at the backup
repository.

Support

The support team has always been good, and there is never an issue that can't be resolved. The techs are competent and know the product. The slightly less than perfect rating I'm giving is because Support shouldn't carry the burden themselves. We hear from Dell sales people all the time, but they never call and ask about this product, nor do they offer to upsell it or make it better. That lack of sales support and coherence hurts the overall rating a bit. When I spend my company's money on your product, I expect you to at least ACT like you care, if not actually care for real. It influences my opinion and future purchasing habits.

Veeam has a pretty decent knowledgebase with articles relevant to all sorts of possible issues (I'v eonly had a few). There's also a forum with searchable answers. Beyond that, submitting a ticket or calling support is easy and they're prompt. We had a licensing issue once and they helped us resolve it within a few hours, even though it wasn't strictly critical.

How can anyone build a house without a blueprint? NetWorker was ramrodded into place here without a design or implementation plan. The result was a setup that was doomed from the start and never worked reliable over the full three years of our contract obligation.

(I assume this question should say "Veeam" and not "Crownpeak Universal Consent Platform")Planning is key. Planning your backup schedule, size, data restore points, replication if you're doing that, &c. Testing is also important; make sure you back something up and then do a test restore. Set up alerts so you know if things aren't working (or even if they are, always good to know that too).

Alternatives Considered

Dell EMC Networker

Previously I have used MS DPM and Symantec Backup Exec. I think they all have similar strengths and drawbacks actually. In general, BE/DPN have slightly better interfaces and terminology but slightly worse backup and recovery reliability. I would recommend Networker over them for the reason of reliability as I have experienced it. My disclaimer is that I worked with DPM and BE many years ago at this point so all this software may have improved at different rates. Backups and backup software continue to be seen as a huge but necessary time sink for me and I plan on doing more evaluations to see if there is better software out there. I am looking at trying Veeam but have not yet had a chance to evaluate, for example.

We have a relatively small environment that is 95% virtual. Veeam is well suited to for smaller environments that have a high percentage of virtual systems. A second consideration was that we were able to back up physical systems too, this allowed us to use one platform for all our recovery needs

Scalability can be addressed in many ways, but there is a consequence:
Higher performance and smaller backup windows may put too much stress on
production storage, and therefore, on its performance and Availability
to production workloads. To reduce stress on production storage, version
9.5 introduces a new way of reading VM disks that is optimized for
enterprise storage.

Veeam Backup & Replication

  • Having reliable backups has saved us time (which is money) on many occasions.
  • Our objective is to educate students, and we need our servers running all the time to meet that objective. Having them backed up properly allows us to do that.
  • Peace of mind in knowing we have good backups is always a positive thing.
