Dell EMC Networker

Networker is only suited for one thing: being a front end for good hardware. We love our Data Domains, the dedupe is insane and they ingest data rapidly. You'd be better off using Veeam, which can talk to the Data Domains natively (that's what we're doing now).

Veeam Backup & Replication

Should you have a virtualization infrastructure based on Microsoft Hyper-V or VMware vSphere, should you host several virtual machines some in production, some in acceptance, should you have a business model where you do regular upgrades and deploy new releases or just want to have a backup capability in case of business critical application requiring disaster recovery capabilities, should you keep backup footprint as small as possible, care for a community edition for smaller businesses and full edition for more corporate environment, this tool is for you.

Pros

Dell EMC Networker

  • When used with a Data Domain appliance, using either DDBOOST or a VTL, it is quick and does a wonderful job of deduplication. We have 2.3 PB stored on a 140 TB DD 4500. While this is expensive storage, the cost for 2+ PB would be even higher.
  • It does a good job of brick-level backups of Exchange mailboxes, and does so in very good time. A few hours backs up our entire organizations mailbox stores in a way that provides object level restore.
  • Used in combination with DPA (Data Protection Advisor), it has a very good reporting capability. DPA, however, requires more than just surface knowledge in order to get really good reports, and the DDOS changes can wreck havoc with customized reports.

Veeam Backup & Replication

  • It offers various backup types. If the infrastructure can handle the forever incremental or reverse incremental options, these are very efficient on space usage.
  • The interface is easy to use. There are a lot of options within the software, but it's never felt overwhelming to figure out and adjust job settings.
  • Restores are simple and offer great options. Even full VM restores are easy to do. File-level restores offer multiple ways to restore files, such as to a different location, or the same, then making copies of any collision files.

Cons

Dell EMC Networker

  • Networker's customer service could use a bit of improvement. While some problems are handled quickly, complex issues sometimes have limited responses with difficulty to escalate up the chain.
  • Networker prior to version 9 is using outdated policy configuration which tends to make some backup windows and obligations awkward.
  • Networker needs a bit better method for accommodating plugin integration with other applications, and better documentation on implementation of those modules.

Veeam Backup & Replication

  • Veeam Backup and Recovery performance is particularly reliant on the performance capability of your backup infrastructure. Your network and disk resources WILL get taxed, so make sure to prepare properly. If your backup infrastructure is slow, your backups will be slow.
  • Backup and Recovery does have a wizard to make recommendations on how to build out the backup infrastructure for large environments, so you should have experts involved in the proper configuration.
  • Some backup/replication jobs do not process in one day. Example - We have some VMs that are quite large, so the processing of VMs can take several days when we change disk sizes.

There are three reasons for not renewing our use of NetWorker: 1) the rising and extremely high cost of support and proprietary hardware needed for deduplication, 2) the complete unreliability of the product (we couldn't recover from a true disaster if we wanted to), and 3) the horrible support from EMC for the product

I really have no complaints about Veeam Backup & Replication. Their service has been excellent and the cost is minimal in comparison to other services I checked out. Implementation wasn't simple and the Veeam Support team was there to help each step of the way.

Use this, and then use Veeam. Or literally just about anything else. It's a powerful engine with a crappy paint job and a rusty frame.

We've been using Veeam Backup & Replication for several years in our
organization, and we perform backups in all of our environments every
night. It’s one of the simplest yet effective and reliable solutions in
the market for the backup segment. You can check out the free Veeam
agent, so you can get an idea of the full product.

The Veeam Backup & Replication solution is up and running every time you need it as it was planned. In more than 3 years that we have been using the product every night, it might have failed or presented an error once or twice, so the availability percentage is almost at 100%.

To identify a bottleneck in the data path, Veeam Backup & Replication
detects the component with the maximum workload, the component
that works for the most time of the job. For example, you use a
low-speed storage device as the backup repository. Even if VM data is
retrieved from the SAN storage on the source side and transported over a
high-speed link, VM data flow will still be impaired at the backup
repository.

The support team has always been good, and there is never an issue that can't be resolved. The techs are competent and know the product. The slightly less than perfect rating I'm giving is because Support shouldn't carry the burden themselves. We hear from Dell sales people all the time, but they never call and ask about this product, nor do they offer to upsell it or make it better. That lack of sales support and coherence hurts the overall rating a bit. When I spend my company's money on your product, I expect you to at least ACT like you care, if not actually care for real. It influences my opinion and future purchasing habits.

Veeam support is good and the Net Promoter Score of +70 says so. However, in many cases the problems come from the hypervisor side or generation of snapshots that do not depend on Veeam and can corrupt the backup data. In general, the Veeam support does a good follow-up until determining the root problem and proceeding with the necessary remediation.

How can anyone build a house without a blueprint? NetWorker was ramrodded into place here without a design or implementation plan. The result was a setup that was doomed from the start and never worked reliable over the full three years of our contract obligation.

(I assume this question should say "Veeam" and not "Crownpeak Universal Consent Platform")Planning is key. Planning your backup schedule, size, data restore points, replication if you're doing that, &c. Testing is also important; make sure you back something up and then do a test restore. Set up alerts so you know if things aren't working (or even if they are, always good to know that too).

Alternatives Considered

Dell EMC Networker

We've been actively looking at other products such as Rubrik or Cohesity in order to get a better experience as well as lower our overall time invested in running backups. Dell EMC Networker fails to stand up to these products in most ways. In our evaluations it was both easier to understand the different systems as well as talk to the software/hardware via APIs.

Veeam Backup & Replication

Unlike many of the vendors above, Veeam is providing a solution that scales from one workload to hundreds and fits comprehensively in any of the spaces between without compromising the core functionality and feature set that makes it such a great product. Veeam are confident in the solution they provide and with good reason, the tag line "It just works" is very appropriate

Scalability can be addressed in many ways, but there is a consequence:
Higher performance and smaller backup windows may put too much stress on
production storage, and therefore, on its performance and Availability
to production workloads. To reduce stress on production storage, version
9.5 introduces a new way of reading VM disks that is optimized for
enterprise storage.

Return on Investment

Dell EMC Networker

  • Networker has helped reduce risk of data loss. We have many compensating controls for business user level data but Networker has been helpful with full image recoveries. Sometimes an IT mistake can be hard to back out of and/or rebuilding from scratch isn't a good option. Networker has helped save lots of IT engineer's time in our company.
Josh Dix | TrustRadius Reviewer

Veeam Backup & Replication

  • Positive in compliance with DR and backup/recovery policies.
  • Positive ROI although smaller organizations may struggle to justify the cost.
  • Positive in terms of man-hours needed for support. Generally speaking, it doesn't need much support, once setup it can often be "forgotten."
