Dell EMC SC Series

Dell Compellent has a decent portfolio of products for varying sizes of business. Their licensing model is suited for those not wanting total a la carte fare, and administration is intuitive as compared to other storage arrays. This combined with Co-Pilot support gives Dell a good presence in a vast number of scenarios where networked storage is required over a DAS solution. It's only fallback is its own NAS solution, which itself may be better suited to smaller environments

DiskStation

It does not replace a SAN, but for light to general usage, it has worked great for us. The web interface works well. I like it so much that I bought a smaller version to use in my home.

Pros

Dell EMC SC Series

  • Dell EMC SC Series (Compellent) does work well most of the time, but when there are massive i/o issues such as snapshot consolidation, it seems to function poorly.
  • Dell EMC SC Series (Compellent) is an easy to use array. Simple to configure volumes, add servers, and adjust policies.
  • The updates seem to be easily resolvable, with very little to no issues coming from any problematic update paths.

DiskStation

  • Easy to setup.
  • Synology App Store grows with time and have access to a lot of 3rd party app options.
  • Ability to scale easily and economically.

Cons

Dell EMC SC Series

  • Reliability. We had several times where VMFS luns would become corrupted and we'd have to move all VM's off to other storage
  • Performance. 1g iSCSI performance was abysmal (although the unit we used was an older device)
  • Management and Monitoring. Both management and monitoring are pretty primitive. We were never able to integrate monitoring into Nagios.

DiskStation

  • It would be nice to see a slightly better hardware spec for RAM and processor. Using the web interface can be slow sometimes.
  • We occasional get issues with iSCSI connections after firmware update. Not a huge issue as we know to check but would be nice if resolved.

The Synology DiskStation is fairly easy to use, but maybe a challenge for those who not super IT savvy. With some trial and error, you can pretty much figure out how to configure the NAS the way you want it configured. I would say it is easy to use once it is set up and maintaining the device is likewise pretty straightforward as well.

This is not solely based on the support engineers themselves but more so that the logging and gotcha's that their array has. There have been multiple times where logs are pulled, but the folder is not large enough, and it crashes the array. Other times there are certain aspects that support either does not know of or isn't knowledgable about how to look at particular issues that could be causing problems.

Unfortunately, the one time I've had to reach out to DiskStation support, it did not go well. My NAS appliance wasn't appearing on the network, and no matter what the support team tried, they could not get it back online. Instead of offering to send me a new unit, they told me to go buy a new one - obviously, this was a disappointing response and not very eco-friendly either!Fortunately, through some internet research of my own, and some ingenuity, I figured out I could restore my NAS to factory settings by removing all the drives and resetting. Only then did I realize I had a bad disk. I had to experiment for a while to figure out which one it was. Once I had done that, though, I was able to get the latest DiskStation loaded back on, no thanks to the DiskStation support crew. If notifications were rock solid, I suspect I would have caught the bad disk before it because an OS problem, but I never received a bad-disk notification.

Alternatives Considered

We initially used EqualLogic, however we found the Compellent to scale better, do more, and cost nearly the same. Their approach to storage technology was very innovative and seemed to be the most comprehensive. We needed a SAN that was enterprise class in technology, but at the price of something smaller

Synology stacks up very well against the QNAP and the Nexsan. We used to find the Nexsan was very power-hungry in the data centre as well as being very loud to run. We still run a QNAP in our environment which works in a very similar way and with a similar interface as Synology however we find Synology to be more reliable overall with less maintenance needed.

Return on Investment

Dell EMC SC Series

  • The SC9000 has been able to serve our current and futures needs well enough to not need to upgrade anytime soon.

DiskStation

  • Saved a lot of money for my customers when compared to more robust NAS or SAN deployments.
  • NFS shares for VMWare works quite well.
  • Didn't like the fact I have to use specific branded SSDs for caching.
