Likelihood to Recommend

Dell PowerEdge R

Works for all scenarios of computing, physical database servers, remote branch offices, virtualisation hosts there are very few scenarios where these servers don't fit. Due to the options for connectivity and density of CPU and RAM they are also options for hyper converged infrastructure that are replacing traditional blade environments.Use of small VMware ESXi nodes as a standalone remote branch server is an excellent option as provides considerable value and savings to deliver 3-5 virtual servers.

IBM Power System S922

The IBM Power System S922 is undoubtedly one of the best in its class. The physical server management is excellent and more convenient than other providers I use. It's easy to scale and expand as needed, securely, and with no performance loss. I recommend it for very robust and demanding scenarios, and as a foundation for application services in terms of server reliability and IBM Power9 processor processing power.

Pros

Dell PowerEdge R

  • Good price - Compared to other vendors’ server platforms. In our scenario (virtualization) we found out PowerEdge offers the best price/vCPU and RAM ratio.
  • Customizable - We were able to select optimal memory/disk capacity for our use case. Other platform's minimum requirements were above our needs, hence needlessly expensive.
  • Good warranty and service - Our project did not involve creating a big cluster with a lot of spare capacity, so the next business day warranty came handy.

Cons

Dell PowerEdge R

  • I would like to see expanded use of AMD processors across the range
  • I would like to see more storage options for NVME disks
  • I would like to see improved memory compatibility

IBM Power System S922

  • Additional CPU sockets (currently limited to two) would allow for performance upgrades further down the line.
  • Resources for training are weak in comparison to other vendors. It took us longer than we had planned to get up to speed.
  • Some features such as data migration seem more complicate than is necessary.

Dell's PowerEdge line does not deviate from standard enterprise architecture norms and those that are familiar in this field will have no issues adjusting to this environment. While some aspects of the ecosystem are highly proprietary (e.g. management tools), the learning curve is not difficult and should also not cause any problems.

Dell support is usually busy during working hours. It is possible to get through after 5-10 minutes on hold. Service support engineers are qualified to provide high quality troubleshooting for any cases. It usually takes few days to replace faulty components or find solution for drivers issues.

Alternatives Considered

Dell PowerEdge R

We found Dell an easier company to work with than HPE overall since Dell allows you to purchase directly from them where HPE requires you to use a reseller. The PowerEdge R servers came in at a lower cost than a comparability speced HPE ProLaint DL. Both servers seemed similar overall in terms of features, with Dell providing a better service and support network.

The Electronic Services web portal is a single internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM internet services and support. This web portal enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems. The newly improved My Systems and Premium Search functions make it even easier for Electronic Service Agent-enabled clients to track system inventory and find pertinent fixes.

Return on Investment

Dell PowerEdge R

  • From the perspective of physical server consolidations, when servers spread across multiple branch and remote offices are gathered into a central data center, this simplification process provides ROI in several ways. One, the configuration control, restriction of server access.
  • Reduce complexity and enable greater standardization of hardware purchases, which lowers costs.
  • Increased security of the move are important.
  • The costs of moves, add-ins, and changes are reduced, as well as the costs of travel time and maintenance.
  • Migrating legacy operating systems to a newer version via rehosting brings similar ROI benefits when it comes to server consolidation.

IBM Power System S922

  • Initial purchase was an expensive one, but we were able to replace a lot of existing hardware in doing so and we expect to save significant money in the long term.
  • Improved uptime and reliability keep our customers happy, and in turn, our other stakeholders too.
  • We now have a clearly defined upgrade path for future expansion and expect to make savings by committing to the Power System family of products.
