Denodo

Donodo is very well suited for large organizations with siloed datasets. Denodo thrives in these environments, since large organizations can afford the licensing costs, and are always tasked to mash up data from multiple environments throughout the organization.

IBM InfoSphere DataStage

It is well suited if your data is quite complex and many data rules are in place. You have to write real complex data joins to generate output. While DataStage can handle it and provide you an intuitive design for support and analysis.

Pros

Denodo

  • Flat learning curve.
  • Does not need brilliant developers.
  • Less need for custom denodo wrappers, even if needed is not very complex.
  • Denodo stored procedures and functions helped address complex, not straightforward requirements.
  • Export/import deployment between environments was very helpful.

IBM InfoSphere DataStage

  • Connectivity.
  • Handling large numbers of records.
  • Varied partitioning algorithms.
  • Complementary packages of connectivity to applications, SAP, etc.

Cons

Denodo

  • Lack of Documentation and user community: Denodo continues to have a small community of super users, therefore there is not a lot of documentation out there in the event you get stuck.
  • Cost: Data virtualization isn't cheap, so smaller organizations might shy away from this technology due to the high licensing costs.
  • Caching strategy: Some slower datasets will require caching... which argues, why not just do traditional ETL if you need to do this?

Denodo is very easy to use. It has a user-friendly drag and drop interface. I'm not a fan of the java platform it resides on.

Because it is robust, and it is being continuously improved.DS is one of the most used and recognized tools in the market. Large companies have implemented it in the first instance to develop their DW, but finding the advantages it has, they could use it for other types of projects such as migrations, application feeding, etc.

Denodo is a tool to rapidly mash data sources together and create meaningful datasets. It does have its downfalls though. When you create larger, more complex datasets, you will most likely need to cache your datasets, regardless of how proper your joins are set up. Since DV takes data from multiple environments, you are taxing the corporate network, so you need to be conscious of how much data you are sending through the network and truly understand how and when to join datasets due to this.

It could load thousands of records in seconds. But in the Parallel version, you need to understand how to particionate the data. If you use the algorithms erroneously, or the functionalities that it gives for the parsing of data, the performance can fall drastically, even with few records. It is necessary to have people with experience to be able to determine which algorithm to use and understand why.

I believe that IBM generally has one of the worst and most complex assistance systems (physical and online) that exists.

Alternatives Considered

Denodo

I did not use any other data virtualization platform. BizTalk is not the right comparison; it is an integration layer and for orchestration; do not use denodo as an orchestration layer, it is not for connecting upstreams to downstreams and orchestrate data flows, it is primarily for pulling information and presenting in a fashion that benefit the audience

We have very limited experience of using Informix and should not provide any comments. But datastage works real well for us.

Return on Investment

Denodo

  • Improved time-to-market. We addressed new requirements in less than 2 person days.
  • Very agile. Easy to handle changing requirements. Like a new requirement, a change in requirement was not expensive either.
  • Platform issues were difficult to diagnose and debug.

IBM InfoSphere DataStage

  • Reduce development time by 65% compared with hand coding.
  • Reduces ETL process maintenance times.
  • Better data governance for technical and non-technical people.
  • Improve time to market for initiatives that require data integration.
