DonorPerfect

I would categorize my organization as mid-sized, but I can see it working just as well if we were smaller or larger. It is a fantastic means by which to manage your donor records and record as much data about each one as you can or would like. DonorPerfect is great for reporting, which would positively impact any nonprofit organization. All NPOs are required to do a certain amount of reporting, but it is so important to share data with stakeholders, donors, management, boards, etc., and DonorPerfect is so versatile and all-encompassing when it comes to formulating data with which to do so.

Raiser's Edge NXT

Great for a donor management system. Keeps data accessible, and reports are fairly easy to pull. Sometimes users have confusion on which reports they are trying to get. So much information, so many options - pros and cons. If you have experienced advancement personnel and a designated database administrator, this is an awesome program that can provide so much detail.

Raiser's Edge NXT

  • User Interface. This is one of the best-looking products I've ever used, very clean and streamlined. Everything is very logically laid out, and the purpose of every box and button is crystal clear. Plus, you still have access to the old-school "Database View" for those people who have difficulty with change.
  • Customization. If you don't like the way a screen is defaulted to look, you can move things around incredibly easily to make sure the things most important to you are where you need them to be.
  • Company Involvement. Blackbaud is very invested in Raiser's Edge NXT, and they are constantly adding and changing things based on user feedback to provide an optimal experience. I feel like my concerns are always taken in to consideration, and there is ample opportunity to test out new functionality and provide feedback that really seem to be used.
  • Accessibility. You can access both the NXT "Web View" and the Classic RE7 "Database View" from any device with internet access.

Cons

DonorPerfect

  • The customs forms are a bit tricky to navigate at first, but that's where the support service becomes so important.
  • I'd like to be able to integrate it with more of our online tools, such as Mail Chimp or Classy.
  • Finding duplicate accounts requires regular maintenance. If someone makes a gift online and they enter their information slightly differently than we have it on file, the system will create a new record. Every month, we go through and clean up those duplicates by merging the records. The processes are simple, but it takes time.

  • Details about events and other modules found in Raiser's Edge don't always translate to NXT. However, new features are constantly being added.
  • Certain analytic features such as Gifts by Constituent Code are only useful if that information is tracked in Raiser's Edge.
  • Once in a while the lag between the actual database and NXT is extensive.

It's fine. It's not the fastest, but not the slowest either. The real limitations come in how difficult it is to pull reports, or how to segment parts of information. This isn't an issue of not knowing how to do something - we've followed up with staff and there are actual limitations that make work harder

Support is so easy. We use chat most often - as we can get someone quickly. The support folks know the product and get answers quickly. If they need to escalate an issue, they do so quickly. The training is great and easily accessible. You can take classes over and over until you completely understand concepts

Customer support at Blackbaud is really good. The wait time in the chat isn't too long and they always make sure that they've solved your issue.

The one area that needs improvement is that the first line of support needs to know when to escalate the issue to the next level. Sometimes I explain my issue in great detail and they still start at the beginning of the support process without reading everything that i've written.

We adopted NXT when our fundraising department was small, so rolling it out to our officers has been seamless. It took 6-12 months to settle on how to use it, and now have established an in-house users' guide specifying what fields are important. We have had good response from Blackbaud tech support when we have needed it. We are less satisfied with the responses to contractual and billing questions related to implementation.

Alternatives Considered

DonorPerfect

We needed a multi-user program that was preferably accessible outside of the office. Raiser's Edge could not provide that at a price we could afford. In fact, the one-user desktop version was a financial stretch for us. While at the time (2003), DonorPerfect did not have all the features of Raiser's Edge, our development team was not going to miss the bells and whistles. Over the years, I have seen DonorPerfect expand their services and remain affordable.

The only other similar product I have used is Education Edge in a non-profit secondary school setting. We also used Financial Edge and Raiser's Edge there where all systems were operating simultaneously. It was a great way to approach the different arenas of the organization while utilizing the same system platforms. We are currently implementing AcademicWorks and I will soon be able to comment on its functionality and usage.

Return on Investment

  • DonorPerfect is a great way to keep notes on donors and schedule times to contact donors for thank yous or discussion. This allows for increased donor engagement which in turn increases donations to the organization.
  • This system has allowed our organization to stay on top of the history of our donors. The home changes in leadership every two to three years. DonorPerfect allows any new sisters to the area to run reports on the giving history and maintain relationships with big donors. This also gives us a chance to re-engage with donors that might have been dropped with previous leaders.
  • DonorPerfect has helped us increase our maintain our mailing lists and corrections. This in turn has saved us money from mailing to wrong addresses, deceased donors, etc.. It has also helped increase our donations by more than double since we began using the system to track donors and the donations we receive.
