Considered Both Products
Dropbox
Chose Dropbox
WeTransfer is another large file sharing entity, however[,] once a file is uploaded, the other user has a time limit to download it. Once that time limit is over, the file is erased. Dropbox has no such time limit, and thus is superior in that regard. Both offer a 2 gig free …
Chose Dropbox
Dropbox seemed to be broader and provided more storage than its counterparts. However, when compared with WeTransfer, the ability to send a very large file with a time limit would be nice, even if the recipient doesn't have Dropbox. The link feature helps, but by default, …
Chose Dropbox
WeTransfer doesn’t have the storage solution compared to the share and store features of Dropbox. Google Drive became way too expensive which is why we went to Dropbox, but will have to seek alternatives if price becomes an issue again. Frame.io we do use for reviewing because …
Chose Dropbox
Dropbox is great as unlike WeTransfer, there is a whole file directory to browse. Not just one off file sharing
Chose Dropbox
We preferred Dropbox due to anyone being able to use it and with common Office programs. Google Drive seems to require a gmail account for everything and, if using for editing, needs to use Google programs. Adobe is too hard to explain - not to mention not everyone has access …
Chose Dropbox
Dropbox makes it easier to share everything by being able to provide a link and it doesn't expire. When using WeTransfer, the emails sometimes get lost in the shuffle of all other emails coming in and you only have a certain amount of time to access the link so if you don't …
Chose Dropbox
I prefer iCloud for personal stuff, WeTransfer is convenient to receive files but I've never used it so send some. SharePoint and Google Drive are great if you're in one of the ecosystems but Dropbox is great if you're in several ecosystems because of the way it interacts with …
Chose Dropbox
Dropbox gives more visual control over the success of uploading. WeTransfer uploads and then sends a link to the recipient. If something goes wrong during the upload, there doesn't appear to be a way to begin again from the dropping point. With Dropbox, I can watch as it …
Chose Dropbox
Although Dropbox and Google Drive can be interchangeable, we find that Dropbox is more helpful for our Design Team because it has larger storage space and can sync to their desktop apps. This allows them to save their files faster and easier than downloading and reuploading the …
Chose Dropbox
Dropbox is much more efficient and easy to use than other tools. It feels more professional and safer to send and view files, especially those with confidential information. This is the first company that I've worked for that uses a business form of Dropbox, and it's so much …
Chose Dropbox
In my opinion, Dropbox is better designed, has better functionality and a better user experience than all of these others. It's more reliable than any of these and has the most advanced syncing and permissions control. It's been around long enough that it also seems just more …
Chose Dropbox
I use Google Drive for most of my personal needs because it is free but I am constantly trying to delete old files to keep up with limited space. For work, where a more premium account is offered, Dropbox does an excellent job of maintaining storage. It is a trustworthy …
Chose Dropbox
Dropbox is easier to use
Chose Dropbox
I did not necessarily choose Dropbox, however it does have much simpler integration with other programs like Slack which makes it my preferred file storage solution. It also boasts a native file transfer platform, which outperforms the other programs I have used. The Dropbox …
Chose Dropbox
Security features of Dropbox are perceived as more reliable than the alternatives. It is also more cost effective offering more favourable discounts for non profits compared to others
Chose Dropbox
I still use the other programs because they all have their features that are useful to our business. What I like about Dropbox is that we are able to have a team account, which makes file sharing easy, unlike Google Drive that makes file sharing so much more difficult. The …
Chose Dropbox
Compared to Google Cloud Storage, the Dropbox app has proven to be more stable and dependable. In the meantime, Google has improved and is a great alternative. But now that we've decided to stick with Dropbox, we'll keep using it. In terms of ease of use, Dropbox appears to be …
Chose Dropbox
Dropbox is a great low-cost, wholesale cloud DMS solution. That being said, its security features and search-ability are not as sophisticated as Datasite or Egnyte, which to be fair, are much more costly solutions. As compared to its peers in terms of cost, Dropbox is the …
Chose Dropbox
HighTail's Pro version requires files to be 25GB and under, while Dropbox has [a ]capacity for 50GB and smaller.
Chose Dropbox
I think that in terms of familiarity with the platform and interface, Dropbox is probably top of mind. However, I do like Google Docs the most, since you are able to edit in real-time, and it makes note of the version changes. Sharepoint has this capability as well, however, I …
Chose Dropbox
Dropbox WAS something I tried to use frequently, but has dwindled in the face of more professional applications and file storage opportunities.
WeTransfer
Chose WeTransfer
While Dropbox does offer features that WeTransfer does not in terms of collaboration & organization, WeTransfer is the better option for simple file transfers. In my experience, WeTransfer is much faster for uploads & downloads. The premium version of WeTransfer also offers a …
Chose WeTransfer
Dropbox is a terrible and slow service, so WeTransfer is the far better option between the two. Google Drive isn't as professional as WeTransfer (in my opinion) so using WeTransfer might be the better option.
Chose WeTransfer
Both solutions work fairly seamlessly. But we prefer Dropbox because we can more easily track our files across devices and across the organization. They are equal when it comes to sending files, but receiving files is where some friction points/frustration points arise.
Chose WeTransfer
While Dropbox is more robust with storage and ways to share, it's often cumbersome to send files, especially with clients that don't use Dropbox. WeTransfer sends my clients a link that results in an immediate download - no fuss, no having to log in. The process is much easier, …
Chose WeTransfer
Dropbox is too complex and unreliable to use. I have had many headaches with files not downloading properly, going missing or not opening. I have to spend a lot of time to figure out what I need to do. And just as you think you have everything under control, you set up a nice …
Chose WeTransfer
WeTransfer doesn't require storage. You just send the files and you're done!
Chose WeTransfer
We actually use both other platforms because we may be required to by our clients or vendors. I find We Transfer easier to use especially remotely - quicker to upload and send.
Chose WeTransfer
The listed alternative are also very good but we have specifically used WeTransfer for it's simple and straight to the point file hosting. All of the above services require registration and WeTransfer doesn't. We can just send our files quickly and call it a day. The files …

Dropbox
Dropbox is well-suited for file sharing within our organization. We have employees who do not work out of a traditional office and need to access files from a variety of locations: at home, in client meetings, and while traveling. Dropbox allows us to continue to work from anywhere and collaborate with each other by sharing our files.

WeTransfer
It is the most appropriate tool to quickly share documents with someone you don't want to give access to your company's own online library, yet you have to share files. It's great that there's no need to create a user, nor for uploading or downloading files. Just have in mind that the documents on the link have an expiration day!

Pros
Dropbox
  • Dropbox's real-time collaboration features, including simultaneous editing and commenting, have revolutionized the way our teams work together.
  • On multiple occasions, we've accidentally overwritten important documents or needed to retrieve deleted files. With Dropbox, we can easily revert to previous versions or recover deleted files, preventing data loss and minimizing disruptions.
  • Dropbox excels in making file sharing a breeze. With just a few clicks, we can generate shareable links or invite colleagues to shared folders.

Cons
Dropbox
  • Change the name of the root folder, the "()" can cause problems sometimes with some tools trying to find paths inside of the root folder.
  • The upload queue becomes slow trying to upload files that have more than ~500mb of file size, even if I have 1 Gbit of speed, Dropbox gets stuck uploading single files with that rule.
  • Sometimes we can't move a shared folder from root location.
  • LAN sync seems not to be working in my experience.

WeTransfer
  • The price for Pro is a bit high.
  • A way for free users to save an address book.
  • The offline app isn't as robust as the web client.

Dropbox is a user-friendly, easy tool which requires little to no skill and they offer a free version with a good amount of storage available. There are other file sharing tools available however at a cost. Dropbox free version I have used for years and it serves every purpose I need.

Usability
Dropbox
[Its] functionality and usability are very good, however[,] on every computer that I have ever installed the app on, Dropbox assumes I want it to update the files every time I start the system up. That's not always true, but the app assumes it is. I can switch that function off, but I would rather that function default to "Off" and then I can decide to turn it on as needed.

As noted previously, sometimes it can take more than once to upload and share a file if you are using Chrome. It doesn't happen often but of course it always seems to when we are on a really tight deadline. It just takes patient in those cases

Performance
Dropbox
Dropbox is really useful, you can access any file from anywhere and you can upload and even edit files online, but, sometimes it can be slow. Downloading, uploading, and syncing is a bit slow, it can take several minutes. Furthermore, the search engine for large amounts of data can be slow too and it is not powerful.

WeTransfer is extremely reliable 99% of the time. There has been twice in 4 years that their service was unavailable due to server outage for several hours.

Support Rating
Dropbox
Our experience with support has been limited which is a good thing. We haven't experienced any major issues with the service and most of our service interactions have been useability questions which we were able to find answers for within their knowledge base. For the few times we have reached out to support, the responses were on point, quick, and our issue was resolved in one interaction. I appreciate not being routed to a chatbot or offshored support.

I've only reached out to WeTransfer support once, but they were prompt, courteous, and answered my question. I assume that future interactions would be the same, I'm looking forward to being a long term customer.

Dropbox
Dropbox gives more visual control over the success of uploading. WeTransfer uploads and then sends a link to the recipient. If something goes wrong during the upload, there doesn't appear to be a way to begin again from the dropping point. With Dropbox, I can watch as it uploads. If I lose a connection, it will continue uploading where it left off when I get a new connection. This is vital in transferring large files. If WeTransfer offers that, I was never able to figure it out.

Dropbox is too complex and unreliable to use. I have had many headaches with files not downloading properly, going missing or not opening. I have to spend a lot of time to figure out what I need to do. And just as you think you have everything under control, you set up a nice work environment with organized folders, you realize your storage space is up anyway! Since I've discovered WeTransfer, I never went back to Dropbox.

Return on Investment
Dropbox
  • Helped us to streamline boxes of papers into electronic folders.
  • Enables a more solid backup of necessary files, not dependent on one specific computer or one specific box of papers.
  • Enabled a quicker search to locate specific files than the previously used operations.

WeTransfer
  • I haven't paid for this software personally, so I'm not sure, but $12/month is very reasonable if you are constantly sharing files.
  • WeTransfer is fairly professional, so in my opinion, links sent to clients look more professional than using a link from Google Drive or Dropbox.
