Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365 and Druva inSync are both Data Backup Solutions built to archive and restore business data. Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365 is designed to preserve data in Microsoft Office applications and is marketed as data loss prevention software. It is most popular with mid-sized businesses, though it is also used by small and mid-sized businesses due to the popularity of Microsoft Office Software. Druva inSync is most popular with mid-sized to large enterprises, and is marketed as an end point security solution.

Features

Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365 and Druva inSync both allow users to secure their data, but since Druva inSync is an endpoint backup solution and Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365 is a data loss prevention solution there are some differences that set them apart.

Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365 integrates seamlessly with Microsoft software, allowing users to store data to local storage or to the cloud. Additionally, Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365 provides a simple to use interface that users will not need much training to master.  Businesses using Microsoft Office software will have no trouble protecting their data from accidental loss or external threats.

Druva inSync is an endpoint backup solution, so businesses can use it to protect their data across multiple devices and cloud applications. In addition to archiving and data protection, Druva inSync includes features to help users maintain regulatory compliance.  Lastly, Druva inSync is versatile and allows users to backup many third-party systems, allowing it to easily fit into most IT infrastructures.

Limitations

Though Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365 and Druva inSync both include data backup features, they also have some limitations that are important to consider.

Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365 provides excellent support for Microsoft Software, but it isn’t as flexible as Druva inSync when it comes to non-Microsoft data.  Businesses with a variety of third-party solutions will need to either use Veeams more general backup solutions or a different backup solution.  Additionally, Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365 doesn’t have many features to aid businesses in meeting regulatory compliance standards.

Druva inSync can support many software options, but for businesses that are mainly looking to backup Microsoft Office data, it can’t match the efficiency of Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365.  Additionally, Druva inSync is not as simple to use as Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365, so users will require more training to get the most out of Druva inSync.

Pricing

Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365 starts at $1.50 per month per user for a one-year subscription, though it is discounted slightly for three and five-year subscriptions.

Druva offers three plans for businesses, with each one including additional features such as analytics and regulatory compliance, but the pricing for all 3 packages isn’t available publicly.  Businesses can reach out to Druva for a quote.

For our use case we have been using it extensively for centralizing the automated backup creation per scheduled time intervals for critical datastores and servers. Designed a backup plan DR plan accordingly and have everything integrated. To have better sleep for operational overhead in the event of ransomware attack or cloud systems going down in one region, this automation tremendously helps us to get a new env running in few minutes with less manpower.

Users who accidentally deleted databases stored in their OneDrive were not able to recover them via Microsoft backup, so I used Veeam backup for Office 365 to recover the files needed for an important project. Veeam for Office 365 is great, and it is easy to recover lost Microsoft Teams files in a meeting.

Pros
Druva
  • We like the option of downloading backed up files both individually and as a group.
  • The ransomware protection is a security feature that puts our minds at ease when it comes to the safety of our data.
  • The Customer Success team does frequent reach outs and technical health checks.

  • My CFO seemed to have lost a whole year of important emails. I simply restored them to his mailbox in a matter of minutes.
  • An employee left the company but an issue came up with a quote this person sent out. I could search his mailbox and got the quote as well as all communications from that customer.
  • It is nice to be able to search emails in various mailboxes without disturbing the user.
  • It is also nice to go back in time. Say they deleted those emails last month I can go back years if needed.

Cons
Druva
  • Advanced Ransomware Recovery doesn't work for all Druva offerings, that would be a great feature to have.
  • The archiving feature could also offer more price flexibility.
  • Seating up the initial configurations can be a little tedious due to the length of the documentation involved.

  • Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 isn't 'multi geo' aware - this means we have to manually select resources to back up depending on their geo-location.
  • Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 doesn't backup Private Channels users create in a Team - there are workarounds for this but it would be nice if this just worked.

This is the second company I've brought to Druva. Just today, I was tasked with recovering a file from a user that last saw it 6 months ago. I was able to restore it in under 5 minutes of getting the request. It's really that easy.

Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 just works so well and is so easy to use. I researched multiple options for Office 365 backup and none seemed to be as easy to setup and use as Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 and the pricing was very comfortable to us. I can't imagine any reason why we would change away from Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365.

Usability
Druva
The product is easy to navigate and manage. Setup and configuration is also easy. We did not need to pay for any additional professional services. Our account team worked with use on the integration. It was not complex or difficult to learn how to setup and use. End users also have the ability to log in and manage their own files and emails

The functionality is very intuitive and easy to understand how to use the product. If anything, the information presented could be a little more verbose. I feel like it is lacking in the amount of information being shared regarding the backups compared to other products like Veeam Backup and Recovery.

Performance
Druva
Page response in the admin center is acceptable- rarely are we waiting for data to load. Backup speeds seem fine, and restore speeds are OK considering it's likely pulling data from cold storage. It often takes 30-60 seconds for the restore to begin transferring files, but speeds are acceptable thereafter

Support Rating
Druva
We had an issue in my first year that took a long time to fix. The support guy was awesome, took screen shots, filled me in, was professional, but it just took so long. I do think that was an anomaly, but it certainly sticks out nonetheless. Beyond that, we've had pretty good support "relationships" with the reps. They're usually pretty prompt at getting back and quite knowledgeable. Just make sure you have your proxies updated, because that's always step 1!

Even though we are a small non-profit, support has always been there for help when needed. They are responsive and knowledgeable. If there are any shortcomings from Veeam for support, it is entirely on our end. With a small IT department, we easily get backlogged with projects.

As I stated earlier, Veeam is a great solution that just works and isn’t super expensive like with Rubrik, Cohesity etc. however it is bring your own storage. Whether that’s disk or cloud. However as a result it doesn’t have quite as many add one and features as those other products. But it does backup great.

Scalability
Druva
We started very small with this product, only backing up key officers' laptops. After our initial experience, we found it very easy to scale up the product to all company laptops and expand into file servers, VMWare servers, and other production-level data, like Office 365 and Teams. We found the product very easy to scale while remaining intuitive and efficient to use.
