Druva inSync

I can't think of scenarios it would be less appropriate or suited for, but it is well suited for an organization looking to keep their files in a safe environment with version tracking and audit trails. That is pretty much any organization in this day and age. Computers are great but hardware breaks down intermittently so knowing you have your files in a secure location that won't ever fail is fantastic

We'd always felt a little uncomfortable about our backup routines. Sync'd copies of our Unix file servers on NAS boxes didn't feel like best practice, and the less said about Windows Server Backup the better. When Druva came along it made us all sit up, think and then issue an intrigued "hmmmmm" sound. Off-site backup without the hassle of stuffing pockets with DAT tapes? "Hmmmmm... this could work". Right now, all of our major systems are still on-premises based—two server rooms separated by 200m of single-mode fibre. Backing up each location to the other room worked OK, but we never really felt truly safe from a major disaster. Druva Phoenix simplifies things considerably, whilst seriously increasing our business continuity prospects. Obviously our original approach to backups was, given that the NAS devices had been bought some years ago, largely free. The systems involved were rather too bespoke and, quite frankly, fragile. Using this Enterprise-class solution has brought in additional costs, but you largely get what you pay for; simplicity and reliability.

Pros

Druva inSync

  • Restoring users and deleted files from both Cloud and desktop applications, with only a few button click.
  • The InSync dashboard allows me to see where all my assets are and when their last backups occurred.
  • The installation process was VERY easy. So getting everyone up and running was painless.

Druva Phoenix

  • Cloud-based, easy to set up, configure backup policies, and administer.
  • Upgrade Backup Proxies on the fly from the Cloud as soon as a new agent version is available.
  • It's easy to scale by installing additional backup proxies when there is an increase in workloads.
  • Optimal use of Internet Bandwidth.

Cons

Druva inSync

  • As part of the initial setup, we had a few issues surrounding large numbers of accounts being backed up at the same time. This was more a Microsoft issue than anything, and with help from support, we resolved the issue.
  • The email reports can be a little useless on occasion. For example, I don't need an email every day with a failed backup report if there are no failures.
  • Again with email, the weekly backup report has so much information in it that the email sometimes fails to load. A simple email with a link to click would be better.

  • It would be nice to have more control over levels if different users - specifically in controlling what email notifications the second admin receives.
  • While the tutorials give great instructions, perhaps setting up some jobs could be a little more intuitive.

Aside from Druva taking away the Share feature just to push folks to the cloud, it's perfect for what it does and should have just continued to grow not have clueless management decide they wanted to migrate the on-premise customers to the cloud version and offer the share tool for them, this was just wrong and remains wrong.

Certain backup solutions can be cumbersome on how they actually work. Where that's properly deploying hardware or software that will house the backups. Druva is different where the software and infrastructure is completely managed. All we needed to do is deploy agents and proxies and point the backups to Druva Phoenix

Most issues I have can be solved without opening a ticket. But if I need to get in touch with a support agent, I can open a chat request and within minutes have a tech on the end assisting me. The few tickets I had to open were resolved on the first call.

The people assisting us with the Druva Phoenix PoC (pre-sales) and the issues we were having (support and engineering) were very professional, responsive, knowledgeable and pleasant to work with. After increasing the logging level, the cause of the issue was found and a patch was created and installed in a short amount of time.

In consultation with a Druva support person we configured a few policies first for several groups of users. Once that was done it was easy to add users and generate emails that contained links and instructions to download/install the app. Once installed, the app applied the appropriate policy and the sync of data began. We had 40 or so devices to protect, and in a week or less they were all protected. The delays usually were on the part of the user who needed to schedule some time (15-30 minutes at most) to accept the invitation and download/install the app.

Alternatives Considered

Druva inSync

My biggest requirement for looking at Data Protection as a Service is security, both in transit and at rest. Druva inSync offers one of the best security models where if a key is chance it does not affect the current session. Furthermore, we did not see the same dedupe savings with other services.

We originally had a local 3rd party IT firm handling our back-ups. Although it was a much-reduced cost, they were not able to handle much of our capacity or requests, as well as charging extra for restoring data. When we broke away from them, the main two products we looked at were Druva and Unitrends. We went with Druva for the full cloud solution as we did not have room for or want any more hardware. The price was comparable.

Return on Investment

Druva inSync

  • Anytime a user does his/her own restore it has saved his or her own time in not having to redo the lost changes made and it doesn't involve IT staff to do a restore for them or to try looking for or recovering the lost/deleted/corrupted file. This savings in money and time spent is apparent, numerous and possibly priceless.
  • Druva is an affordable product; it's per user cost is acceptable and is affordable for even small businesses

Druva Phoenix

  • Reliability - Backups are completed on time or there are explanations about failures and how to correct them.
  • Value pricing - We like the OpEx model: affordable subscription rate and ability to manage our spending.
  • The simple restoration process, with options for overwriting the source or duplicating it.
