Duo Security

I think that Duo is well suited to adding that extra layer of security that is becoming important as more services are cloud based and hence accessible from anywhere. They have multiple authentication options available - push to a mobile app, code generation on that app, sending SMS or phone calls, and the ability for an admin to generate one time codes also.

Ping Identity Platform

Really like [this] solution, it fits our requirements 100%. There are unlimited possibilities to extend the product, either by creating additional adapters or selectors. We really like the policy management level in PingFederate. It's extremely helpful when we can specify customer journey per many different requirements like user location, application type etc. As well, both StepUp and TopDown authentication flows were implemented [easily].

Pros

Duo Security

  • Duo Security integrates easily with the most popular single sign-on solutions. This allows us to roll-out the solution really quickly on an existing infrastructure with limited amount of involvement.
  • Duo Security offers support for a multitude of second-factor mechanisms providing a flexible framework for implementing a solution tailored to a company's needs.
  • Duo Security offers great APIs that allow to perform some custom management and greatly increases the flexibility of the solution for the organizations that have custom development teams.

Ping Identity Platform

  • Based on open standards, we can use as much or as little of the Ping suite as we like, depending on which other technologies we've already implemented.
  • Continuous innovation and product enhancements have ensured their products continue to meet our rapidly evolving needs.
  • Ping Identity has been an outstanding partner, starting with the RFP process and continuing to this day, years after the sale. They are focused on our success at every level of the company and are highly responsive to our needs, issues, and product suggestions.

Cons

Duo Security

  • Some of the applications that Duo works with offer users the ability to send them a 'push' - which means their iPhone app pops up automatically for them to simply check and approve or not approve button to allow remote access. Users love this. I wish all applications would allow Duo to do this so it was consistent for users. It's even easier then having to enter the PIN code from the app.
  • We have found that the license count on the admin interface is sometimes wrong, counting devices instead of users - but we pay for licenses based on users - so it's sometimes difficult to track properly.
  • It would be nice that users didn't use Duo for 90 days or some period, they would fall off the active license use count. We have all of our users setup in case they need to work remotely, so we find we pay for more access licenses than we actually use in any given period. We have about 30% of our users that have never used it, but we continue to pay for the licenses as a business model decision - but some companies do offer 'active' license count pricing only.

Ping Identity Platform

  • PingID has some limitations when used as the MFA for some LDAP implementations. You need to use it as a RADIUS password credential validator to solve for some of those limitations, which in turn causes challenges with our ephemeral cloud deployment model of PingFederate.
  • The basic logon services within PingFederate are adequate and well-documented, but simple features like disabling user input after entering credentials would help with some of the additional customization required to support real world failure modes.
  • PingCentral authorization models and configuration remain unpolished compared to other products, and now the features seem to be shifting toward onboarding PingAccess and PingDirectory over improving baseline administrative functionality/operations.

On the user end, it is very easy to use. We only need to show our users ONCE how to use it and he/she can pick it up right away no matter how tech savvy the end-user is.As for administrator, it is easy to deploy and configure. If a user has a new phone, the admin can log into Duo Security's web-page and change it right then and there.

Easy to use; all UI's are user friendly and easy to learn.[The] possibility to use API is [a] big value as well. We really like integration with CyberArk; with it we can manage privileged accounts according to company standards without breaking any rules, and we can be 100% sure that only approved persons will have administrative access.

I've had great experiences with Duo Security's support; one story I like to tell is that once I just called the main support number and found myself speaking with one of the founders who was taking support calls. That's not something you expect or see very often. In addition to the generally good support, I had several opportunities to speak with Product Managers, and they appeared to be very interested in my insights. That's a good sign a company is trying to keep in touch with users and cares about getting their input rather than paying lip service, which is sadly what most companies are good at.

Alternatives Considered

Duo Security

Duo offers cryptographic infrastructure that is more robust than SecureID does (or did). In addition, Duo has never intentionally built back doors in to their product at the behest of the NSA. Many Duo products are either themselves open source or are based on open source codebase, so it is easy to verify that they are secure. Duo's pricing is also MUCH better than RSA's.

Ping Identity Platform

All contenders were capable, but we had scale concerns with NetIQ's architecture. In the end, what set Ping apart from the others was their level of engagement in understanding our use cases up front during the RFP stage and how they were focused on what we needed more than what they could sell to us. Additionally, they came in at a better price than the competition, which earned them first crack at a POC, making it their deal to lose; and of course they hit it out of the park.

Return on Investment

Duo Security

  • It's never easy to see the dollar side of a ROI when it comes to integrating new IT systems. Specifically with DUO Security. It is always seen as an added cost or a negative impact to the end users. The company or organization however will be thankful when system access is way more secure via end user authentication.
  • The costs of telephone messages or calls to a user's mobile device can be costly depending on how often or how many users and applications DUO Security has setup to use. It will cost $10.00 (USD) per 1,000 telephone credits.
  • End users were not happy to require 2-factor authentication using VPN through their mobile device and to receive a request to authenticate through the same phone. Hardware Tokens with mobile devices such as YubiKey without a digital readout on the device itself could also complicate this particular setup.
