Likelihood to Recommend

Ektron (Discontinued)

From what I have heard, Ektron is great for security (forms).I would still recommend looking at any other CMS over Ektron. It is by far the worst I have ever used and, unfortunately, continue to use. If you have a large team of well-trained content editors, each in charge of small portions of a website, I could see Ektron being useful. If you are a small business or don't have unlimited funds to waste on a poorly made product, use Wordpress, Drupal, or Concrete. If you would like something that works well and comes with few 'undocumented features,' use the aforementioned as well.

Pros

Ektron (Discontinued)

  • Ektron CMS is reliable and performs well. Outages are extremely rare, and the site is fast.
  • The Ektron CMS content editor is easy to use, and updates can be made by non-technical people. The Ektron site synchronization process allows us to automatically publish updates every 30 minutes. This is very important to the resort's marketing efforts during the busy ski season.
  • This is straight from the marketing department: 'Ektron CMS is user friendly for non-technical people, and it allows us to be more effective in our marketing efforts.

Cons

Ektron (Discontinued)

  • The evolution of the product has focused on architecture and functionality that is of value in large distributed installations, but less so for smaller 1 or 2 server implementations.
  • Development of the back end authoring and administrative interface has lagged. It has received a cosmetic face lift over the years, but has received little attention in regards to ease-of-use and usability. To some degree, it has poor discoverability with many idiosyncratic UI conventions.
  • Our authors complain about learning and retaining the knowledge for using the authoring interface. In Ektron's usage model, it is a skilled role. We would prefer the authoring be more intuitive. I don't feel Ektron necessarily lags behind the competition in this area, but there is lots of room for improvement and differentiation here if they chose to make this a priority.

Since I work on the implementation side of things, and do not directly own licensing for Ektron CMS, I have to base this rating off of how I think it will be received or presented to customers looking to start a new site deployment. I try to remain CMS agnostic, though my specialty is with the .NET and Microsoft stack. Because of the experience I have working with Ektron, I tend to be more forgiving with the shortcomings as I am familiar with how to work around them or past them from experience. Being familiar with the community available also helps, as you become familiar with the best approaches to find solutions to your issues. Each product has it's ups and downs and all of them are only going to be as good as the company or development team implementing them can make them. This is EXTREMELY important to remember when choosing a CMS, as it can make or break your expensive investment.

As both a manager of CMS content as well as a designer, I find the CMS to be intuitive and easy to understand. (They also have great documentation and customer support if you need it.)

Between the platform's functionality and Ektron's technical support, I use the CMS with confidence on a daily basis.

Ektron is one of the best solution for .Net platform. Over the years have improved the performance issues that the previous versions had. My only complain is right now you can't do Page builder pages if you choose to have a MVC architecture

Alternatives Considered

Ektron (Discontinued)

Ektron is part of our stable of products and depending on the organization we are serving could be recommended. The price point is higher and so tends towards the enterprise in terms of purchasers. Additionally, it fits better in less IT heavy environments than Sitecore. It's more robust than Sitefinity or Umbraco, but Sitefinity has an edge with pricing. EpiServer is a strong contender to Ektron with compelling features and authoring experience and more competitive pricing.

Return on Investment

Ektron (Discontinued)

  • Increased Efficiency - Authors can easily create content, submit it via workflow for approval and schedule move to production without having to rely on IT staff/schedule.
  • Time to Market - With the use of PageBuilder, Ektron has allowed customers to create custom landing pages/micro-sites with ease to (1) quickly respond to marketing/communication initiatives (2) use internal resources to save money versus having to request additional services from an outside partner.
