If you have a highly bureaucratic organization that is heavily focused on procurement, Emptoris can provide some value. It seemed to be very good at linking the contract information to procurement for better spend control. If you are trying to implement a standalone contract management solution that allows you to easily create contracts and store them in a central location, this isn't the tool for you. There doesn't appear to be a simplified implementation. In general, when a SaaS solution has a complicated and expensive implementation, I am very skeptical. This does not show that the vendor is trying to move customers forward on a single code base. If that many things need to be done during implementation, you are starting to customize the solution for every customer. This hurts the vendor's ability to scale and make improvements in the future.

SAP Ariba Procurement

Although SAP Ariba supplier platform has its faults, the overall process and management of the documents and notifications on the platform make it an absolute essential tool to a supplier. Added to that the Discovery option where suppliers have the ability to build their revenue by responding to RFPs that are published matching their organisations capabilities seems like a winner. Tapping into a vast network can only bring good things to any supplier.

  • Document protection - the Check Out contract feature is a great way to allow external parties to make modifications to contract language without the ability to accept those changes. Those redlines can then be imported back into Emptoris and reviewed or further modified as needed.
  • Notifications & reminders - you can trigger an email manually from within the system, or you can configure automated notifications andreminders to alert users when a new task is received or has aged a given amount of days, etc.
  • Interview wizard - there is a lot of value in the interview wizard. Administrators can configure screens with selecting options via check boxes, radio buttons, or typed-in values. Variables and conditions can be used to selectively populate fields within the contract or apply other options, making for a quick and convenient method to generate contracts conforming to corporate standards.
  • Field customization - administrators can customize a list of options for various fields including contract substatus, address type, and user created business term variables.
  • Approvals - many different options are available to configure approvals to trigger automatically upon presenting and/or executing the contract including specific individuals, one or more approver groups, or based upon various criteria including terms within the contract, type of contract, or the contract's owning organization.

  • Listening. The team are receptive to ideas of how to improve the network and these ideas are often implemented.
  • Standards. Providing a uniform set of rules enables us to onboard and engage quickly.

  • Reporting, Emptoris comes with standard reports which can not always can be fit into our business. This needs to be improved. I hope Emptoris is addressing this issue in their latest releases.
  • Though the feature of editing language in MS word is excellent, loading MS word takes time.

  • Ariba Connect Support - with the exception of the few, the general responses from a Support Request has the engineer repeat the issue at hand with the first response, request for additional examples on the second, then attempt to close the ticket with the third, citing that the system behaviour is OOTB or 'as designed'. No real investigation is undertaken until there has been multiple responses, or the SR has been escalated to an specialist engineer.
  • Ariba should have better functionality for a supplier to route PO's to specific branches (different email addresses) within their organisation without the need for a full integration or through the use of email routing rules.
  • Provide a more thorough process when a supplier upgrades from a Standard to Enterprise account. Currently suppliers are misled into upgrading to an enterprise account without any formal confirmation from Ariba to ensure that the supplier understands why, or even that they upgrading. This, coupled with the only option to pay outstanding invoices to downgrade, discredits Ariba and the Buyers reputation in the marketplace, and introduces significant P2P implications if re-enabling the supplier through a new account is undertaken as a work round.

There are a lot of new, exciting products coming out in every field and I believe that there is always something better right over the horizon. If it was my choice, I would review my usage of Emptoris and other software periodically to make sure I'm using the most efficient software possible.

  2. End users also have an option to use Guided Buying whose user experience is like end-user applications.
  3. The product also has a rich set of notifications for workflows.
  4. Mobile App further improves the usability of the overall platform from supplier and buyer perspectives.
  5. For handling strategic documents such as contracts, electronic signatures can be done with one click sing DocuSign or Adobe eSign from Ariba screens.

Customer support has always been top notch. From small configuration changes to overall process changes, support has the teammates in place with excellent knowledge and is able to provide solutions based on business challenges quickly. Their customer support through their Account teams continues to be hands on and very responsive to needs in a timely fashion.

I am a fan of Ariba to be used for the entire lifecycle of Sourcing. From RFX's to cutting PO's. I feel Emptoris misses the boat on the idea of a "One Stop Shop" for all of your Sourcing/Purchasing needs

I will recommend ARIBA however some good points related with ContractWorks (which I do not have such a big experience with)
  • it has powerful automation features that reduce the administrative load of users.
  • its entire storage system is searchable so users can find the data they need with ease.
  • administrators can set unique access permissions for each user.

  • SAP Ariba has allowed that our Procurement Service Center performs much better with a reasonable headcount having 1 system able to support all our Policy requirements and it is easy to use.
  • We are able to have 1 system covering 80% of our Global Indirect Spend - 1 system for global approvers for all countries, 1 way of working - consolidated.
  • It provides ability to identify opportunities for value added initiatives that save time and money for the company.
