Epicor HCM

While Epicor HCM is functional for enterprises with many branch locations, I feel that is best suited out of the box for locations with corporately centralized HR. This overcomes some of the shortcomings of security capability and the need to spend a lot of time in configuring routing. The CSS portion of Epicor HCM is not as robust as competing systems and should not be used if corporations are actively looking to onboard at a high rate.

It's very well suited to our company. We have 130 employees. They have even more programs than we even use at this level. Everything HR-related is there and very easy to use. I love the reports, and I am able to make custom reports, which I have to have. We look at information in a lot of different ways, and I can get all the info needed.

Pros

Epicor HCM

  • Lots of room for configuration such as routing, auto-alerts, training competencies, FMLA tracking, security rights, etc... But good luck getting those set-up.

iSolved

  • One of my personal favorites is the fact that I can quickly clock in and out. The previous site we used was a pain, having to go from one page to another just to clock out for lunch and back again.
  • There is a great calendar where you can view each day's hours you've worked. It gathers the overtime, PTO requests and even paid holidays. That way you can easily map out the rest of your week if you don't have enough hours, or have too many.
  • The ease of requesting time off is another great bonus. It's quick to navigate, and you can view all of the hours you've accrued quickly.

Cons

Epicor HCM

  • Embedded report building: when it comes to my organization's reporting needs, we are instructed by Epicor to utilize Microsoft Report Builder instead of the Epicor reporting function.
  • Payroll interfacing: Monthly my organization transmits several payroll cycles. Often this carries great risks as Epicor and our ADP Payroll system do not communicate seamlessly. There tends to be errors with Epicor not transmitting data accurately to ADP.
  • Integrity of reports: Epicor is notorious for dropping employees from reports. Unfortunately, because of this issue, you have to comb through every single report which negates any efficiency whatsoever.

  • I would like it to be easier to add a supplementary payroll when processing a payroll outside of our normal bi-weekly schedule.
  • The way that PTO hours are accrued and displayed on their paychecks can be a bit confusing to the employees.

I just recently lost my job after 16 years, and purposely sought out a position where I could continue to work with HCM. I am now in a similar role to what I was in before, and can continue the same type of work and enhancements that I did at my other company.

Usability

Epicor HCM

Epicor HCM 7.0

Where it's good: Epicor HCM at a high level has a straight-forward interface for navigating to the main content sections at either the employee or HR administrator level. The interfaces are consistent throughout the application, and after a brief learning curve, one can navigate through the remainder of the interface pages in any content area without too much difficulty. HCM also has great tools for making sure the analysis of data is available and accessible to non-programmer personnel.Where it struggles: One thing working against the usability of the HCM product is the overuse of the row-selection scheme for all many to many relationships. HCM uses a "select the row from the left frame" and then "enter data corresponding to this row in the right frame" scheme for most of its data entry components. One example of overuse is the employee address entry. During the first setup of an employee or during a candidate's application, HCM allows the user to specify multiple addresses. While this functionality is desired for long-term storage, an option doesn't exist to forgo this interface type for quick initial entry for the primary use case (one address per employee). This is one example, but is particularly visible when a candidate must also bridge the learning curve.

The product performs well. As with any software there are bugs and system enhancements needed, but there are channels in place to let Epicor know what they are so they can add to future versions. Open Enrollment and Salary Planning can be a bit slow at times.

Ease of access is number one. Employees and admins can get to the information they need immediately. Payroll is streamlined and quick, and reports are thorough and easily customized. Benefit programs are tracked by the system, and we can pull reports or get info pushed for eligibility. Terminations are easy and they take care of all of the paperwork.

We had someone from Epicor come on site to do training, and we "shared" our trainer with another company who was also doing the same major upgrade. It was nice to have another company there so we could ask each other (and the trainer) questions. This allowed for more meaningful discussions during training.

As stated earlier, you won't find all of the problems and things that you would like to improve on until you implement. After go-live, you then will have a long period of adjustment as you get the data and processes to work the way that you really want them to.

Alternatives Considered

Epicor HCM

iVantage/Epicor HCM (at the time of our purchase Epicor was in the process of acquiring iVantage from Spectrum HR ) met most of our expectations in term of system functionality, user experience, ability to customize the application, integration with other systems and allowed us to stay within the implementation budget. We reviewed a number of other applications. All functionality being equal, we looked at the end-user experience and the long term cost of maintaining the application (annual maintenance cost, professional services, license cost etc)

For Payroll iSolved is much faster then Payforce. It allows us to create reports we need on a quarterly basis, and allows us to input garnishments that currently have a zero amount to be withdrawn. We have some complicated vacation accruals which were not accruing correctly in ADP and which are in iSolved.

Performance is not noticeably impacted by adding more users. Microsoft IIS and SQL are Epicor HCM's underlying technology and have proven reliability. In addition, IS staff are easy to find that know these technologies.

Return on Investment

Epicor HCM

  • I have seen customers go from a paper based system to Epicor and it allows for a much faster way to access, modify and share information, leading to reduced time chasing information around and allowing time other more pressing HR matters.
  • Makes audits much easier as all items are stored in one system rather than in separate files (often times in separate locations).

iSolved

  • iSolved has helped the company clearly see who may be trying to accrue more overtime or someone who is under working. It gives a clear view of the hours your employees are putting in.
  • It frees up a lot of time for HR because all paper documents for taxes, benefits and reviews are all digitized now. Less time having to consolidate and file over 200 employees' information.
  • To piggyback off my last statement, iSolved has also lessened our company's carbon footprint. More online forms and e-signing means less paper and ink being wasted on each singular employee multiple times over.
