Episerver Digital Commerce

Episerver Digital Commerce may be a good fit for you if you do not have your own development team, do not need any custom development, and the out-of-the-box experience takes care of all your business needs. If you need significant custom development and value testable, discoverable software, then Episerver Digital Commerce will not be a good fit for your organization.

Magento Commerce, part of Adobe Commerce Cloud

If you have a strong development team who is familiar with Magento (or willing to learn its nuances), it is a very powerful e-commerce tool that can accomplish a lot for your brand. If you don't have someone (or multiple 'someones') that can be dedicated to Magento development/management on a daily basis, you will be very frustrated and it will not be a viable solution. Other tools in the platform are fairly easy to use, but without backend support from a knowledgeable developer, you will not be successful with Magento.

Pros

Episerver Digital Commerce

  • CMS capabilities. It supports the marketing strategy pretty well.
  • Custom pricing (qty based or market specific). Very useful in B2B domain.

Cons

Episerver Digital Commerce

  • The commerce engine is not robust enough and we find this is not very user-friendly at all
  • The promotion engine could use a more user-friendly approach and is very complicated to use

  • A lot of generic problems could be bundled by Magento and implemented. Choose by Image in the custom option for instance
  • Bulk upload is a major issue. Magmi does a wonderful job. Something like Magmi integrated with Magento could be a powerful add-on.
  • Search could be improved a lot.

Magento is well-supported by a big development team at eBay, which not only addresses bug reports very quickly, but also is constantly working on improvements to the platform. The wealth of Magento third party modules ensures that the platform will be up to date with future changes to
Payment or ERP systems.
Security is always a concern and with the Zend framework as a foundation, Magento has had very few security-related patches since I have started to work with it

The CMS has clearly had time to evolve as a tool but the digital commerce aspect is outdated and needs to be reviewed as it is not intuitive to the admins using it.

Fully understand what is OOTB feature of the platform before proceeding to develop. Then implement a customization of key features once you can prove they are working as OOTB to make them more user friendly and productive for the business. Eg pre order and e gift card

Alternatives Considered

Episerver Digital Commerce

Episerver was by far the most user friendly content platform allowing our business to easily manage the content with ease resulting in an overall productivity increase and time for the team to spend less time doing content management and more time managing the personalization benefits the platform represents.

We did evaluate WooCommerce and Wordpress against Magento and I am listing some major plus points that Magento carries over others :- The extent to which Magento can be customised is way beyond the others.- The number of Plugins that are available for Magento is a lot more than others.- Magmi which I used for Magento bulk upload is only available for this.

Return on Investment

Episerver Digital Commerce

  • Our rocky implementation was very costly to our organization
  • The untestable nature of epiCommerce has cost us a lot in development time and fragile integrations
  • The difficult database schema has cost us a great deal of development time for maintenance and new feature development
Tim Hardy profile photo

Magento Commerce, part of Adobe Commerce Cloud

  • Inventory Management is OK but not great. Each Magento upgrade tinkers with the settings.
  • Having unreliable product information due to complicated uploading systems.
  • In regards to brand perception, resources, and sampling, we saw major success.
