Likelihood to Recommend

FileMaker Pro

Despite limitations, Filemaker Pro is perfect for a company which is in constant flux and which requires a custom work flow which an out of the box solution doesn't provide. One example is that my company requires orders to be submitted where based on product type, purchase location and company category all impact the price that is charged. I've used several e-store solutions and most of these are very cut and dry. You can have a product with 1 price, the only exception is a coupon code. Filemaker allowed us to create an store that allows our users to create an order based on our crazy pricing structure.

Pros

FileMaker Pro

  • The relational database management system makes the program highly customizable to fit the needs of any product. You can add a ton of information to each record and update your inventory on a regular basis with an Excel import or manually inside of the record. It has the capability to incorporate barcoding, which can manage your available inventory with ease.
  • The scripting language allows FileMaker to automatically calculate complex algorithms automatically or generate report outs with the click of a button. This allows for greater UI, especially with active users who are not familiar with writing code. Almost all of our internal data is linked to the FileMaker database
  • The server license allows many users to update the database in real time, which is handy if your inventory is constantly changing. We have users with Macs, PCs, iPhones and handheld tablets linked to our FileMaker database and they are updating the information constantly throughout the day.
  • If you invest some time into formatting and scripting the database, there is a high ease of use for users without knowledge of any programming or FileMaker itself.

Visual FoxPro (Discontinued)

  • It is very fast to access data in SQL, Access, and other ODBC languages.
  • It has a lot of great code examples available on the web for free.
  • It has a lot of wizards to aid in application development, both from Microsoft and from third parties.
  • It is a structured language, so supportable code is fairly easy to create.
  • There are still a lot of FoxPro experts available to call on if needed.

Cons

FileMaker Pro

  • I had some big complaints about how to edit calculations and scripts, and not being able to print/export PDF from server but with the last 2 versions I can't complain any more. Those got added.
  • Syncing records between iOS and Filemaker Server still requires a developer to accomplish. Although I make money doing it for others I wish there was some "central" method of syncing that everyone can follow.

Likelihood to Renew

It it not really up to me but my opinion does have some weight in the decision and the reason I would renew my use FileMaker Pro 8.5 is because I am finally getting used to it! Now that I have been working with the program, tasks have become quicker and projects are getting done faster. File Maker Pro 8.5 really is a versatile tool and I think we are just scratching the surface with it's abilities.

Usability

FileMaker Pro 6.1

The usability rating I'm providing is for the development interface - the usability of the application you build is relative to how much effort is put into the application. Filemaker needs to roll out some features that are "modern" sooner rather than later. They do roll out new features every year, but at a slow pace. We generally get 1 new TRULY useful feature every year. They need to step it up some!

The developers I’ve worked with have been very helpful and easy to work with. There has just been a lot of turnover and our account has been passed on multiple times and we constantly have to re-explain how we built our platform to the new developer and they would have to figure out where the previous developer left off in order to accomplish what we want to see happen next.

Suggest you use an iterative R.A.D. or AGILE development approach. (i.e. rather than writing a gigantic spec for a system, then building it). FileMaker facilitates quick prototypes. Developing an example, then allowing users to "try it out" is a snap.

Alternatives Considered

FileMaker Pro

FileMaker is still the quickest way to go from zero to having a minimum viable working solution. Simple solutions can be built in as little as a afternoon of development. It is the only tool I am aware of which allows tech savy end users with domain knowledge to build bespoke apps for their businesses without undertaking professional software development training.

  • FoxPro beats Access in several ways. It is generally faster and leads to more supportable code.
  • FoxPro loses to the programming language C in speed and flexibility. You can run C on almost any platform out there.
  • FoxPro has better report writing and screen development tools than out of the box MS SQL.
  • Java beats Foxpro for web application development and platform flexibility.

Return on Investment

FileMaker Pro

  • Our largest client, a Comedy Promoter in the UK, have a suite of software that we created and developed for them over the last few years. The initial outlay was questioned, however the streamlining of the company and the hours saved in unnecessary admin have enabled them to grow at a much faster rate, without the need for extra support staff. The historical data collected now informs the new markets that they are exploring, removing the guesswork and instead creating new opportunities that would otherwise not have been exploited.
  • A smaller client of ours, an Events Crewing company, have a very simple contacts management application in Filemaker, which has been created to allow automatic updating from a Web Form by potential employees. This enables the boss to be on site while being able to vet new members of staff remotely. It is estimated that the initial cost of the software was recouped in the first month, and two years later they have grown in size by 33% whilst retaining the same permanent workforce, who still work the same hours.
  • The software can also be made for a single job - a Tour Manager for a major UK touring artist came to us with 300 US visas to fill in. We simply overlaid fields onto the scan of the form, and utilised the data from their established Filemaker contacts database to auto-fill the forms for them. These were then auto-emailed to each of the contacts, who updated any incorrect data, signed and returned the forms and a job that would have taken around 3 weeks took less than 2 days.

  • Positive impact is that the value of FoxPro applications has continued to increase over the years, so we are in high demand for our services.
  • Negative impact is that sometimes you have difficult to support scenarios where you might have to spend many hours to just keep something functional.
  • A negative impact is that this language is taught in very few places, either in schools, or private learning centers.
