Likelihood to Recommend

FileMaker Pro

Despite limitations, Filemaker Pro is perfect for a company which is in constant flux and which requires a custom work flow which an out of the box solution doesn't provide. One example is that my company requires orders to be submitted where based on product type, purchase location and company category all impact the price that is charged. I've used several e-store solutions and most of these are very cut and dry. You can have a product with 1 price, the only exception is a coupon code. Filemaker allowed us to create an store that allows our users to create an order based on our crazy pricing structure.

Cons

FileMaker Pro

  • Cross-platform consistency - the iPhone version is not nearly as functional as the desktop version, which could cause troubles if you want to update your inventory with a mobile device while actively performing a task. The layout is cluttered and inconsistent.
  • The development of a functional database will require a highly skilled FileMaker programmer, or multiple people working to address specific requirements for the database. This could take months to construct and can be costly if you want to create a highly customizable database with the proper scripts.
  • The Excel exports are rather simple and require re-working if you are trying to make anything visually appealing. I'm sure more backend programming could be performed to address this issue, but for the average user, the programming and links can be rather complex.

Based on how entrenched we are and the benefits we do garner from using FMP, it would be a lengthy and major effort to get off of FMP.

Usability

The usability rating I'm providing is for the development interface - the usability of the application you build is relative to how much effort is put into the application. Filemaker needs to roll out some features that are "modern" sooner rather than later. They do roll out new features every year, but at a slow pace. We generally get 1 new TRULY useful feature every year. They need to step it up some!

I could call or email FileMaker at any time to discuss my issue, and they were very pro-active at asking for help from me about my problem when they needed more information and at asking me if my issue was resolved.

Suggest you use an iterative R.A.D. or AGILE development approach. (i.e. rather than writing a gigantic spec for a system, then building it). FileMaker facilitates quick prototypes. Developing an example, then allowing users to "try it out" is a snap.

Alternatives Considered

FileMaker Pro

Since we had implemented FileMaker Pro early on with the company, I have not used any other database software on a regular basis. Some others have used Zoho Creator with success, but since the cross-platform and program functionality of FileMaker is well established we have not looked into alternative programs for database management.

FoxPro

We are only using FoxPro because it is the only way to add custom plugins into the software we use to manage our stock. FoxPro is a semi-oriented object language and should clearly not be compared with recent technologies.

Return on Investment

FileMaker Pro

  • I have one customer who has saved probably 20 hours for her main management staff because they no longer have to fax and copy reports. In the field they probably save about an hour a day (times about 8 people) not having to mess with paper. The other benefit is they probably save about 5 management hours a week they spent resolving poorly handwritten reports. Now they have this under their belt they will expand it to handle time cards and other paperwork nightmares.
  • One customer is also off of paper and saves about 20 hours a week. Their inspectors were spending most of their time on one type of equipment and had to scramble to handle the secondary items. They now have time to inspect more types of equipment despite the fact they had a retirement and have one less person doing it.
  • One positive about the FileMaker Developer Certification program is that you don't have to hire someone full time to maintain something that you have custom build. You can hire a local contractor who can keep your overhead costs down by using them as needed and not having to keep someone on staff full time. Or if you have some IT staff the developer can work with them to train them and when necessary step in to fix issues or add new functions.

FoxPro

  • We are using FoxPro because that is the only way to add custom plugins in the software we use to manage our stock.
  • So, FoxPro is suitable for this need.
  • We are developing software in c# .NET, compared to this, FoxPro is clearly out-dated.
