FileZilla

I use FileZilla to securely upload files that are not permitted to be sent via insecure methods like email or web forms. FileZilla is great to test the ability to "reach" the remote SFTP server and to verify my files arrived. Once I have tested that, then our internal IT group automates the uploads to these third parties, however I can always manually log into FIleZilla to verify the uploads.

It's great for repetitive or regularly scheduled activities like reports or file transfers. However, it's not so good for on-demand activities. It doesn't support task shortcuts to run specific tasks. If it did it would be perfect.

Pros

FileZilla

  • Strips away unwanted underlying code from products that produce documents using any Microsoft product that is not needed in our products.
  • The nice part is that it strips away hidden code such as ctrl and another digit that is not necessary or can be replaced with the correct coding to produce standard processes such as graphics using ANSI or another protocol as well as line feeds and header masks.
  • We are in the process of determining if their pro product will function in the way we want it to across networks rather than going to each workstation to make changes decreasing our productivity.
  • We are also evaluating whether their technical support is responsive.

  • FTP jobs. Flexible scheduling and file watching options (send a file when added to a folder). Also flexible file naming capabilities - when a vendor wants a file with a different format (or vice-versa) Also the new encryption steps are handy.
  • File watching capabilities - If you have files that have to be somewhere by a certain time this is very handy. You can pair this with Automate's email capability (easy to use).
  • File Copying - If you have a lot of files that have to be sent on a schedule this is the way to go. You can also filter by date so only recent files are copied.
  • File Purging - like copying you can use date filters to purge old files - no more clogged folders!
  • Conditional statement functionality - If/Then, Loops, etc. Easy to use and makes the tasks MUCH more useful.

Cons

FileZilla

  • Server version for Linux: The FileZilla Server version is only available for Windows and not available for the Linux Operating System. As we have a huge Linux fan base and most of the servers being deployed on Linux across the world, there is a need for the server version of this software to be available on Linux.
  • Proper tutorials for all the available features: I sometimes feel that this tool offers so many advanced features, but most of them remain hidden behind some nested options. This happens because of a lack of official tutorials of this tool.

Usability

FileZilla

FileZilla 9.4

FileZilla is really easy to understand and makes it easy to log into servers to upload files. Moving files around is a breeze (even if it's a little tedious to wait for large quantities to move one by one) and editing html and css files directly is a feature it would be difficult for us to live without

It's just very easy to use, extremely versatile, and very reliable. It's hard to find use cases where it won't work.

I've never contacted FileZilla support directly, but they are so popular that there are countless tutorials online showing how to connect to any number of web servers, how to configure SSH/SFTP and so on. I feel that because of the popularity of FileZilla, the support from the general user community is sufficient.

Support is very helpful and responsive, although using the tool is very user-friendly, so I hardly use the service.

Alternatives Considered

FileZilla

We've used mostly either command-line FTP programs built-in to the operating systems, or we've used web-based file transfer sites. Some of these web-based sites might require Java or other specific browser addons, which sometimes are not safe and/or can be hacked, so it's much safer and more convenient to use FileZilla instead for all file transfer purposes.

Return on Investment

FileZilla

  • The positive impact is easy file management. Since we have multiple clients some of them have different host providers which offer their own FTP interface. Using FileZilla allows us to use one interface to interact with all of our client files.
  • The return on investment is quick turnaround for updating files.

HelpSystems Automate Desktop

  • Positive: Reliability on FTP jobs - really important on bank files.
  • Negative - annual support a little pricey - but not unusual for this level of software.
  • Positive: Does not require a dedicated administrator, especially after the jobs are created and tested. I perform other job duties and this rarely interferes with them.
  • Positive - Since it is easy to learn and use it makes it easy to have a back up administrator
