I think FENXT is well suited for medium to large sized organizations who are willing to make an investment in their systems. I do not feel this would be worthwhile for small organizations or ones who do not prioritize their database systems.

Any business that believes it will expand or grow in the near future should consider Intacct. Their software is very easy to use, very easy to build reports in, very easy to run specific reports, close at month-end, and it captures all the Financial data necessary to perform audits and run your business.

Pros

Financial Edge NXT

  • Data entry is much easier with NXT especially for accounts payable
  • Reporting is fantastic with the ability to drill down in the reports to the detail and to export reports in more consistent formats (PDF, Excel)
  • Bank reconciliation is a breeze with the cash management capabilities

Sage Intacct

  • Intacct has a number of valuable resources including Intacct Collaborate, Intacct Community and the Intacct Learning Center.
  • Your Company has the ability to purchase an option for a sandbox environment, which is a "test" environment using your live data. The sandbox can be updated 4 times a year without additional cost with your most current company file data.
  • Intacct allows a user to create customized reporting. Within our own Company, the manner in which items on the Income Statement and Balance Sheets appear are not ordered in the same fashion as some of the financial reporting as provided by Intacct. However, you are able to create completely customized reporting including formats for something that is more consistent with the formats of the reports we used before.

Cons

Financial Edge NXT

  • The dashboards need to be imported onto company website for board review
  • The financial reports generated within the program should be as appealing (not so canned) to the ones we have to format in excel
  • Implementation costs could be a lot less

  • The contracts module does a poor job if your company is using multiple entities with different currencies. Several key functions of the module don't work (cancel a contract, for example). Also, "Paid Deferred Revenue" is not really paid deferred revenue - so be careful if your policy is to net down deferred revenue.
  • Multiple entities with different base currencies: Intacct struggles here. For example, if you have a vendor bill that is to be allocated to two entities with different base currencies, Intacct cannot handle it and requires a complicated work around that introduces the risk you expect a global-capable ERP to eliminate. If two entities with different base currencies enter into an intercompany transaction, the native auto-balancing feature does not work - you have to enter the offsetting intercompany receivable / payable accounts which introduces some risk and unnecessary complexity (albeit, minor).
  • AR and AP navigation: A good ERP has customer and vendor "portals" where you can explore the various transactions and master data of that vendor or customer. But Intacct doesn't have that at all. If you want to see the outstanding invoices of a client, you have to click into a sub-menu and then filter for that client.
  • Prepaids and Fixed asset modules: These are not native modules. They are clunky and the reporting is extremely poor in these modules. Standard reports you would expect to see such as amortization or depreciation waterfalls are not available. It also has a hard time with different currencies.

There aren't too many non-profit specific financial/accounting software solutions available. Even so, Financial Edge NXT meets the needs of our staff and allows us to operate efficiently.

It takes some time to get adjusted with the system and know your way around. Overall, this is a great system that allows multiple systems to adequately integrate in order to automate a lot of information that comes from external sources.

There are times when the system is down when multiple people need to log in to track time to be able invoice clients. This at times can be painful, but we work around it when it happens.

I would prefer that we have full customer support for FE NXT but there was an additional charge for the ability to call support which we felt was not cost effective. When we have used chat and online support the response has been good and issues resolved in a timely manner.

currently you must submit a ticket via the customer portal and then wait for a response. The time you must wait for the response varies based on the urgency of your request. Sometimes you just need a quick response and a phone call would be easier or even a live chat ~ would love to see them roll that out instead of having to wait when you have a question or issue.

It was great for generic training but we had the system modified by our third party implementer and a lot of that was not covered in various training's that we received or took online. Attended Advantage last year and that as super helpful in learning a lot of the intricacies of the system.

I would not use a thrid party administrator to implement your system, especially if you are going to be modifying the system at all. Use Intacct implementors as they will be able to better support you on any issues that come up after you go live.

Alternatives Considered

Financial Edge NXT

I have used other products such as Banner at previous jobs. When I came to my current job, they already had Financial Edge in place. It was easy to learn and more user-friendly than Banner and other programs I had previously used. We converted to Financial Edge NXT shortly after I started working there. The advantages of Financial Edge NXT are a great benefit.

Quickbooks was our legacy system, and did not provide an easy means to do project-based accounting. SAP Business One was too complicated and expensive for a company of our size. Sage Intacct addressed our core need for project-based accounting at a reasonable price point.

Return on Investment

Financial Edge NXT

  • Positive impact on our desire to 'modernize' (i.e. getting a system that looks and feels more contemporary than our previous accounting systems).
  • Generally positive impact in our ability to streamline or simplify some of our accounting processes that took longer in our previous accounting system.
  • Negative cost impact in that we pay much more for NXT than our old system. In retrospect it may not have been worth it to pay for 'NXT', and we might have just gone with the database view, as that is perfectly suitable. But admittedly I am not sure about the pricing difference.

Sage Intacct

  • We have been able to perform a 10-day close using Intacct, which generates a positive ROI for my team
  • Our reporting and access to transaction level details is also a positive ROI
  • I have not freed up time for my AP accountant as the AP and PO approval workflows are cumbersome, negative ROI here
