Fortinet
Fortinet offers great Security features and is one of the leaders on that, and integrating Wireless LAN infrastructure with Access points proved to work rather seamlessly. Ease of management, single platform and ability to customize licensing as per needs were elements in favor of adding the Wireless LAN solution from Fortinet to our security portfolio.

I love the equipment for small-scale commercial solutions and quality without the price tag. I might not recommend their products for a large organization with multiple locations and servers. However, the GUI interface will allow remote access and setup across the network. I think this is a great solution for small businesses and families or home office solutions, provided there is some IT knowledge for setup and maintenance.

Ubiquiti Networks
  • Automatically load balances based on band. Makes it simple to spread out users.
  • Updates can be set to automatic or manual. Automatic uses rolling updates, happens every time we update the controller.
  • Continually add new features and improvements with their FREE software upgrades

Cons
Fortinet
  • In the web portal, it would be nice if you could create a customer, assign that customer all the devices in the solution, and have a single pane glass to manage them all. Right now you need to access different web links to manage the devices.
  • The security feature set could be a bit more sophistication, like an Arista AP which polices the air.

  • Supply can be a problem, especially for new products. We have had to sometimes wait for months for supply to come in.
  • No phone support. Only email/chat. can be frustrating sometimes just texting someone, but have not had to contact them very often.

Support Rating
Fortinet
Fortinet offers excellent support. They will work with you until the solution is doing what it is designed to do, within its capabilities. They also do an excellent to follow-up with the end-user prior to closing the ticket.

We have not needed to contact support, except to replace one device that was damaged in shipping. The company immediately issued an RMA without delay, and we had our replacement product within a week

Alternatives Considered
Fortinet
as a stand-alone product, the Fortinet wireless LAN solution isn't the most powerful, nor compelling out there. Others, like Cisco Meraki, offer great products, with added wifi features at a similar price point, but where Forti shines, is when integrated into a network with firewall enablement such as FortiGate. Overall, it stacks up well with others and is a solution that needs to be evaluated in a purchasing project.

Ubiquiti Networks
Prior to this, we used Cisco Meraki wireless access points, which did not allow for centralized control, therefore several access points shared the same SSID. Because the client's movement from one device to another was not as seamless and reliable as it is with the current Ubiquiti solution, this shift cost both time and stability during configuration.

  • Less expensive to buy

Ubiquiti Networks
  • The cost of the equipment vs. my uptime is streets ahead of typical consumer equipment.
  • Adding additional AP's is extremely easy and little to no downtime for setup.
  • Transition between Unifi and Edge equipment can be a little clunky but it works.
