G Suite

I can't imagine doing a startup or lean growth organization without G-Suite after having been using the platform for a few years. Having formerly dealt with desktop applications and the infrastructure required to manage them, G-Suite is like a breath of fresh air. For smaller organizations that need to be lean, nimble and fast-paced, I think G-Suite is a perfect solution for email, document management & file storage. I can see where larger, more complex organizations with a lot of security and user roles would struggle a little, but for the small to medium-sized business, I think G-Suite is the way to go.

WordPerfect Office

For some reason, WordPerfect seems to be popular in law offices, at least in my part of the country. I imagine this has to do with its relative ease of use when preparing documents, and the wide availability of forms for legal documents (although I suspect that any forms that are available in WordPerfect are also available in Word and other formats).

Pros

G Suite

  • It’s an incredibly efficient way to create and update documents, spreadsheets, forms, and more.
  • Staying organIzed across an organization is easy with G Suite, as it allows access to the most up to date version of any document, detailed sharing capabilities (public and private) and integrates with countless other platforms.
  • Gmail is by far the best email platform to work with due to its countless built in features and add-ons as well as its simple access to everything within your Google Drive.

WordPerfect Office

  • WordPerfect has kept many of the same features for the past 20 years. It can even open documents made 20 years ago. Large documents are opened easily.
  • WordPerfect has a ton of formatting options. It is fairly easy to format items and lets you see the code that it is using to format, which does make changes easy.
  • WordPerfect comes built in with exporting to MS Word and PDF among many others. This is a nice addition since not many people have WordPerfect.

Cons

G Suite

  • It would be nice to have Google be the "be all, and end all" of our authentication across all systems. I know it is possible to do most things through Google Cloud Platform development, but that is beyond the capabilities of most smaller companies. IdP, LDAP, SSO, etc.
  • Better options for "network storage", to migrate off of a traditional model of having a network drive for company/team use. The higher tier of G Suite has Team Drives, which partially helps address this, but does not do it well enough to eliminate our old network drives without sufficient training of users to break habits that they have been trained to do for decades.
  • Where is the ability to "flag" emails as important/urgent? I know if someone using an email application such as Outlook flags an email and sends it to me, Gmail is able to show me that flag, but there is no way for me to actually set that flag from inside Gmail.

WordPerfect Office

  • My main gripe with WordPerfect concerns the Reveal Codes function. There have been times when I am working with a document that contains a hard page break and there is no real way to remove it. Attempting to adjust these settings with the Reveal Codes function is nigh impossible.
  • Unlike Word, there doesn't seem to be any sort of online community of users comparing notes and exchanging advice for solving common problems. This makes it difficult to fix things like the Reveal Codes problem discussed above. When I first encountered this issue (and the second time...) I ran an online search to see if others had the same problem and how they may have addressed it. There were very few results and the ones I did find were several years old. So, this is one downside of WordPerfect being a far less popular application than its competitor.
  • This might be a nitpick, but WordPerfect has a function for opening PDFs, which I find to be pretty useless, especially when Adobe software is designed specifically for this and is widely available. I never use WordPerfect to open PDFs, unless it is on accident.

There is no better solution for cloud storage and real time collaboration. The amount of features included in G Suite is unmatched and out of other things we’ve tried over the years, nothing comes close to being as great of a tool.

I would rather use Microsoft Word but since the conversion isn't flawless we are stuck using WordPerfect.

Everything within G suite is incredibly user friendly. Nothing is complicated to setup or use regularly and all features are relatively intuitive.

Office 365 is nice, and the online apps are good. However, in my opinion, if you're trying to get people adopting a cloud-based approach to office applications, using Office 365 will not be enough, as people will fall into old habits and not fully embrace the benefits of cloud-based office applications. They will continue to use them the way they always did.

WordPerfect Office

I have used Microsoft Office extensively as well as Google's suite of office products. I think that Microsoft is more versatile overall; from Powerpoint to Excel to Word, as well as Outlook, it has the whole office pretty much covered. WordPerfect is a very strong word processor and great for everyday use, but I don't think it could replace Excel, despite its useful tables function. I don't know if WordPerfect has an email application, so I can't compare that to Word, but we use WordPerfect side by side with the rest of the Microsoft Office suite.

Return on Investment

G Suite

  • G Suite has allowed our young organization to have tools that help us look as professional as possible while not costing us an arm and a leg while doing it. It's really helped us save money.
  • G Suite has been a great alternative to native Apple tools since we are a Mac environment organization. Mac tools haven't been all that great and aren't very compatible with other systems. G Suite fixed that.
  • G Suite has been a good way for us to collaborate on documents across the organization, allowed our sales people to create great presentations and also let us control our email and documents in a way we never could before, without breaking the bank to do it.

WordPerfect Office

  • WordPerfect has made it possible to continue to update a 20 year old document and keep it viable.
  • It is foreseeable that eventually documents will be able to be converted to MSWord flawlessly and this would be a great bonus, but currently it is a downfall; one that keeps us using WordPerfect although.
