Research Team Insight
Published

Zoom and GlobalMeet Collaboration are two popular web and video conferencing products. As with Skype in years previous, “Zoom” has become almost ubiquitous with online meetings and web conferencing. While most popular for its web conferencing product, Zoom is is a Unified-Communications-as-a-Service platform that supports webinars and VoIP as well. GlobalMeet Collaboration is also the online meetings product for PGi’s suite of online communications software with similar offerings to Zoom.

On TrustRadius, Zoom’s user base is spread nearly evenly across small businesses, mid-sized companies, and enterprises with 31% and 36% being from enterprise or mid-sized companies respectively. GlobalMeet Collaboration is most popular with enterprises, but is most commonly represented by professionals in Hospital & Health Care. GlobalMeet Collaboration is popular in this industry given its reputation for being a secure choice.

Features

Zoom is a video communications platform specializing in web conferencing, webinars, and cloud-based telephony. Zoom also specializes in conference room management and equipment. It is a great choice for organizations of all sizes looking for flexibility in how they conduct online meetings, webinars, and conference calls.

Zoom is also a great fit for organizations looking to consolidate their web conferencing tool with their VoIP and/or team chat software.

As previously mentioned, GlobalMeet Collaboration’s biggest selling point is its security features. The vendor promises to be secure and reliable and stay on top of ever-evolving data security policies and regulations. Due to issues like “Zoom-bombing”, security is a bigger-than-ever topic in online meetings software.

Outside of online events security, GlobalMeet Collaboration also receives kudos for having an intuitive and easy-to-use interface and in-touch customer support team.

Limitations

Zoom’s user interface is simplistic, but users report that the location of buttons and commands are not intuitive and can make hosting meetings awkward. Users also report having several issues related to starting up Zoom from browsers, integrated apps, or on mobile versions of its client. There may also be similar tools more suited to small businesses, which is not considered a priority with Zoom’s one-size-fits-all model.

Drawbacks to GlobalMeet Collaboration for some reviewers include lack of advanced add-on features (in comparison to competitors), host controls not being robust enough, and troubleshooting issues. GlobalMeet seems to work best when all participants are participating virtually, rather than there being a mix of in-person and virtual guests.

Pricing

According to TrustRadius research, 79% of Zoom users believe it delivers good value for its price. Helping cement its claim on the web and video conferencing space, Zoom is available completely for free for up to 100 participants in a 40-minute meeting. Zoom’s paid plans are better options for teams that will need a higher participant maximum and unlimited meeting minutes. Advanced features also include the ability to record and store completed minutes and interface customization for online events.

GlobalMeet Collaboration tracks at being less expensive than Zoom. It also has a free plan, with its paid plans starting at $12 per month per user with an annual commitment. It features an enterprise plan whose pricing its contingent on company size and host requirements and includes global dial-out and toll-free number options which are a plus for meetings with a lot of external participants.

GlobalMeet is well suited for an organization that wants a simple web conference platform with no added features. It seems like this is the way to go if you want to not spend a lot of money for a service. GlobalMeet is not well suited for large organizations, or someone who needs to host multiple meetings and needs robust features such as attendance tracking, presentation sharing, and ease of use.

I think Zoom runs circles around Teams! I just wish starting meetings was easier - anyone with a link should be able to start the meeting the way you can in Teams. It would also be great to be able to see participants when you are sharing your screen.

Zoom
  • I love how easy it is to set the focus on the presenter. It is annoying when people don't spotlight themselves as a presenter, so you get to see the whole gallery of attendees in smaller, two-inch windows.
  • I like the capability of having break-out rooms. Even though I don't use them very often, it is nice to have them available if the right situation presents itself for smaller group chats.
  • The recording quality is better than I have experienced with other products (Microsoft Teams, WebEx, etc.), and the fact that it is already an MP4, so I don't have to convert it for publishing on our intranet is huge to me.

Cons
Discontinued Products
  • There is a cost for the conferencing services unlike competitors like FreeConferenceCall.com or Skype which have free options. However, you pay for what you get and the audio/connection quality can and has been an issue for us with other vendors.
  • There are a lot of shortcuts that can be used on the line to mute/unmute lines, record the audio, request operator assistance, etc. However, these are difficult to memorize so we end up forgetting or relying on a print-out of the shortcuts that we keep near our desks. I wish there was an easier way to use these such as voice commands.
  • In the post-conference email recaps you get the phone numbers of those who dialed in. However, it can be difficult to know who these numbers belong to unless you remember the direct #s for the participants. I wish there was a way to save contact info for certain phone numbers within the system and let GlobalMeet add the names to the numbers for all future post-conference emails.

Zoom
  • Sharing zoom complete information is not visible on the screen, and also a bit is confusing minimizing and maximizing.
  • Every time someone enters the chat, a chat box appears on my screen, and some features are missing from this version.
  • Automatic conference connection based on a schedule isn't an option, and neither is enhanced security measures.

GlobalMeet is not a very good tool. There are better web meeting platforms available in the marketplace. The system is clunky, not intuitive, and experiences often technical issues. They have made updates recently but it is too little too late. It may be a good platform for smaller organizations with tighter budgets.

We're sticking with Zoom for the foreseeable future--given its compelling feature set, ease of use, and advanced technology, there's just no other competition to be excited about. Plus it's a Gartner-recognized industry leader, so it's a rather easy choice.

For the most part GlobalMeet loaded everything quickly. Zoom has among the best performance of any video conference platform, as I've mentioned several times. Besides that, their Chat platform works great, and their back end always runs smooth. It's unfortunate that reporting can now only be done by one month at a time, but nonetheless, it only takes a second to run any kind of Zoom report, whether it's an attendee report, Poll results, a user report, a list of meetings from the past month, etc.

As previously mentioned, I was in charge of facilitating a weekly meeting with 60 attendees. I had major issues with the screenshare crashing repeatedly during the meeting. I got in contact with a GlobalMeet Technician immediately. He was extremely responsive and worked with my technician to resolve all of the issues quickly. After his intervention, I never had the same issue again.

As I've written before, Zoom makes us feel like we matter and that we're a client rather than a customer. They want us to succeed and they put in the time to make sure that we do. I feel like they're more of a business partner rather than simply a vendor or supplier. They spent a lot of time onboarding with us, giving us demos, helping us get set up, and then giving us follow-up to be sure it's going well.

If you receive any pushback from higher ups, point to any of the various positive reviews like this one. Or show Zoom's excellent Gartner report, or articles describing Zoom's partnership with Sequoia capital. It's not difficult to show how Zoom is a trustworthy industry leader with best-in-class technology.

I was not involved in the purchasing decision, but choose GlobalMeet over Skype in some situations since not all organizations permit their colleagues to join other Skype environments. WebEx is not widely deployed in the organization. I have just started using Teams, and I am not as familiar with using it yet. However, I have had success with joining other organizations that use Teams on a call. It is disappointing that functionality such as the whiteboard is not mutually available in those situations (yet).

Zoom cannot be beaten for ubiquity - 100% of my clients and prospective clients are already familiar with Zoom. This is the #1 reason why I use Zoom. Additionally, Zoom integrates with AcuityScheduling, saving me a lot of time in creating meetings and adding them to the calendar. Zoom is disappointing in terms of video quality, interactivity features, and privacy. In cases where I need to use the recording of webinars for digital products, I will always use Crowdcast, and in cases where privacy is essential, I will use JitsiMeet.

The billing and price model is really fair for so many functions that they offer, our remote work requires each of the features that Zoom offers, so accepting payment for a tool like this is the least we can do. Because the Basic licenses are completely free, and because it's very easy to configure and install Zoom, and because anyone can join Zoom from a link without needing an account, scaling is a Breeze. There are absolutely no roadblocks. My company keeps adding more Zoom Pro license every week since it's so in demand. We were able to convert users from several different platforms onto Zoom with no trouble at all.
