Google Voice

Google Voice is well suited for a team that would like its employees to text/call one number. When an employee confirms for a shift, or is running late, everyone on my team sees it, but only one person needs to respond. It's very helpful to have that visibility, especially so that everyone on the team knows that texts/calls are being responded to. It can be an issue however when an employee wants to speak to someone directly on the team, and tries calling that number only to get someone else picking up. But usually, we just direct the employee to that specific person's direct phone line, as the Google Voice number is not the phone number associated with the phone.

Twilio Programmable Voice

Twilio is well-rounded for almost any company that doesn't require much in terms of voice automation (smart IVR, call center forwarding, etc). It can hold its own on as many phone numbers as you like, and the voice quality is very clear most of the time (some countries' destinations might experience issues such as light noise, just as with a normal landline). You can even develop a reasonably complex IVR platform with TwiML and PHP, but the maintenance on this case is your own, so you'll need to evaluate this option if you're running heavily automated interactions with your customers.

Pros

Google Voice

  • Google Voice has been great for setting up additional phone lines and numbers.
  • The voicemail inbox is a great feature and you can see when messages come in online and listen to the messages from your computer.
  • Google Voice allows us to have multiple phone numbers and lines for specific business purposes.

  • The "insights" feature is very useful when it comes to supporting our users. Both VoIP and Carrier insights give the ability to know what happened on a call
  • Twilio is very reliable as a dialer. We do not have downtime events often (maybe 1 per year for 10min).
  • Twilio has a team that can work with carriers to improve dialing for users where the carriers are not working well

Cons

Google Voice

  • I think there is room to improve with regards to call forwarding.
  • I wish there were a concise way to know if the call was to your Google Voice number or your personal number before answering the call.
  • when I add a contact to my account on the web it doesn't seem to sync with my phone even though the same email address is logged in.

  • Answering machine detection is the worst part of this product. The messages are cut off and do not wait until most machines start recording.

It's user friendly, how to use it is self explanatory, they support all their own options while someone like Phone Booth uses a third party. I can cancel Google Voice anytime and I choose how much I spend with Google Voice

I haven't had problems with dropped calls, bad reception, lost recordings - everything works the way it should. The iOS app is easy to use, and the process is easy to explain to other people. It's also the cheapest way I've found to call internationally - I've used it to interview people from London and Austraila.

I give them a 6/10 because while they are well-intentioned and answer the phone if you have complex technical issues or questions they may not be able to help you. To be fair this may have just been my experience, but IMHO I think google should choose a new company for their tech support or start doing it themselves.

For the most part, you don't need support if you understand how to read error handling, debugging, or sip messages.

It is a pretty seamless program to transfer to, even for people who either have little experience with these programs or people who were stuck on Skype

Alternatives Considered

Google Voice

I use Google Voice personally and it works great with my Google account. At work, I have a RingCentral account and while it might have more features, I find it more cumbersome to use. The app isn't as polished. The voicemail transcription is pretty good, but not as smooth. Overall, RingCentral works fine, but I wouldn't choose it given the option.

We previously used Skype for communications, however the price per minute or second per call was more expensive, and it didn't give us the flexibility of integrating calls with our CRM (Vtiger), allowing our sales force to initiate a call with a prospect just by clicking on its opportunity's phone number.

Return on Investment

Google Voice

  • Google Voice has saved us a lot of time in regards to overall productivity.
  • Google Voice allows us to operate at a greater scale than without it.
  • Google voice allows us to track which advertisements are working best.
  • Google Voice allows us to spend less time listening to voicemails.

Twilio Programmable Voice

  • Our customers are able to implement a large part of their sales initiative (calling) through us due to Twilio's product
  • Twilio takes a decent amount of support and knowledge gained over time. This is expensive in the long run.
