Grow.com

Grow is an incredible tool for a business like us that requires hundreds of dashboards and thousands of users, each with specific and varying access requirements. Since we have ~150 client dashboards, each of those needs to be restricted with a 'View Only' permission for those specific client POCs. Similarly, we have ~50 internal dashboards that different employees/departments require access to, with varying levels of access.Grow makes it incredibly easy to share a URL with our clients and have them easily access just their dashboard. Many other data visualization platforms have a per license payment structure, which just wouldn't work for us. With unlimited users from Grow, we are able to accomplish everything we need in terms of scalability.

Microsoft Power BI

Power BI is great for reporting of any type. The dashboards I create for my executive team are crisp and easy to understand. I often get complements on it, and suggestions on what other reports or data could benefit from Power BI. Power BI is still dependent on data sources, so if my data source connections break, then the report is no good. This isn't something that you can create and forget. It needs eyes on it to ensure the data is correct

Pros

Grow.com

  • I love the fact that you have a team of developers who can help me build metrics or fix metrics that I do not create properly. I had to learn SQL in order to really build the metrics that mattered, which was a lot of fun, but resulted in many broken metrics. The vendor's team was great in responding to me requests for help!
  • Really, really appreciate the fact that Grow has SQL formulas to reference when building metrics. Again, as a novice, this accelerated my ability to learn and not have to leave your site and resources and stay within the Grow web properties.
  • Great account managers who check in regularly and are willing to help out whenever needed.

Microsoft Power BI

  • Engaging dashboard displays with drag and drop modules to convey data in a meaningful ways.
  • Familiar Microsoft "Ribbon" type interface that creates an integral feel with the rest of the Microsoft suite of products.
  • Built-in mobile optimization window and associated Mobile applications that allow viewing from any location connected to the server.

Cons

Grow.com

  • There are basic labeling issues with some of the graph types. Wish there was more customizability here, especially on complex graphs.
  • Could help more with analysis of data and trends, but that's going into full-fledged BI territory.
  • The functionality of being able to snapshot data isn't quite there.

Microsoft Power BI

  • It is such a powerful system that it can come across as intimidating for some without some Excel knowledge
  • I'm not a database analyst or administrator, so calling the data in can be difficult (not necessary the fault of the software, but something that could be difficult for teams without someone with database knowledge)
  • It can come across as confusing, when there is both a local Power BI and online Power BI components. They don't necessarily do the same functions. You'll definitely want to know how to use the online version as this is how you'll publish and share the results of your findings, but the local one has a lot of capabilities that don't appear to be directly available in the online version (and if so, it's not immediately apparent).

PBI is very easy to use because of its similarity with power pivot and excel. DAX is the basic foundation language to be mastered to quickly build reports. Custom measures have been introduce to write instant DAX functions (But doesnt work all the time and need a understanding of DAX to debug). Easy to chart multiple charts and also third party charts

Alternatives Considered

Grow.com

I initially selected Grow because it was integrated with our CRM (ProsperWorks) and allowed me to use SQL to query that data. I've stuck with it because it supports many of the other data sources we are interested in pulling data from and gives us a lot of flexibility in doing so.

Microsoft Power BI

Microsoft Power BI as I said earlier is unfortunate in relation to the panels but compared to Tableau.Although Microsoft Power BI has a general interface easier to understand in my company because we already have a signature with the package Office 365 that the integration of the same is excellent.

Microsoft Power BI

  • I'm using the free version, so the only investment was the time spent to learn how to use the product (which as an Excel user, was very short).
  • I use Excel to store every single bit of information about all the projects I do, and being able to see them visualized helped me see some redundant steps I was taking.
  • No negative impact at all for me.
