Highcharts

It is excellent when you are wanting to create clean, straight to the point, data visualizations. Pie charts, bar graphs, and the appropriate drill-downs are easy to develop and deploy. This helps a lot when needing to develop a data visualization solution for non-technical teams. However, the lack of customizability makes it difficult to create specialized visualizations.

Looker

Looker is one of those tools that is easy to pick up and play with, even though you would probably need an hour or two to get used to the dashboard and do some training. Once you get the hang of it, it is easy enough to start pulling in data and displaying them on charts. There is an Explore view which allows you to look at various metrics and pull them all into one chart, displaying the information you need on an easy-to-read view. This comes in handy when you have data from various places and need to put them all in one place. Where it is less appropriate is for the data analysts, who are used to this kind of information and need deeper analytics. Looker does not provide anything in further detail than what you've added, so it is a bit of a push to try and get analysts to want to use it, when they can easily take the data offline and do what they like with it.

Pros

Highcharts

  • A wide selection of chart types.
  • Can handle large amounts of datasets.
  • Can customize look and feel to match the application.
  • Good community and documentation.

Looker

  • It's on-demand and in the cloud, we don't have to mess with AMIs or scaling issues
  • Looker's data domain creating tool is better than anything we've seen
  • LookML, Looker's specialized language is incredibly extensible and allows us to connect and visualize almost any data type

Cons

Highcharts

  • Customizability is more restricted as compared to d3.js
  • More tweaks required to make it responsive.
  • Drill-down functions are more complicated to develop.
Anonymous | TrustRadius Reviewer

Looker

  • Mobile viewing is HTML based, not always highly viewable.
  • Basic operations can be difficult to achieve. There is a function called table calculations which allows this.
  • Running on a single server, the entire instance can slow down if even one user schedules a large dashboard.

We've been very happy with Looker so far, and all teams in the organization are starting to see its value, and use it on a frequent basis. It has quickly become our accessible "source of truth" for all data/metrics.

Looker is relatively easy to use, even as it is set up. The customers for the front-end only have issues with the initial setup for looker ml creations. Other "looks" are relatively easy to set up, depending on the ETL and the data which is coming into Looker on a regular basis.

Never had to work with support for issues. Any questions we had, they would respond promptly and clearly. The one-time setup was easy, by reading documentation. If the feature is not supported, they will add a feature request. In this case, LDAP support was requested over OKTA. They are looking into it.

Highcharts is almost 10 times more popular on real websites, so we decided to go safe here. The community was most important to us.

Looker

Looker stacks up very well against the other tools we have evaluated and used. All the tools have their own pros and cons. Looker had a better edge in terms of visualizations when we chose to use it. After several updates, other tools began to have newer features. Looker still stands competitive.

Looker

  • Looker was like upgrading from a flip phone to a smartphone for me after using other BI resources in the past.
  • Looker makes it simple to reuse code, allowing us to construct single sources of truth without having to rewrite the fundamental concepts. For all levels of data fluency, the user interface is intuitive and easy to use.
  • Import the same results directly from Looker to excel. [...]
