Hootsuite Pro

Hootsuite is a (relatively) inexpensive social media monitoring tool that is an essential tool for individuals and small businesses. It's cost continues to be it's star feature, as they are admittedly more robust programs out there that essentially performs Hootsuite's functions (and more, if taking analytics and other features into account).

Radian6

Radian6 is well suited for organizations looking to tap into Social Media and see what is out there and what opportunities monitoring Social Media will bring to their organization. What is great about Radian6 is that you can use the tool for as little or as much as you want to get out of it. Even using it a little opens the doors to some customer facing/saving opportunities that will help you get a better understanding for how your organization is viewed.

Pros

  • Organize Social Media Content
  • Able to post to many accounts at once
  • Weekly analytic email
F. Flobo Boyce profile photo
  • Social media monitoring: Radian6 excels in pulling in mentions of our brand as well as a detailed assortment of key words. Topic Profiles allow an incredible amount of filtering and let create separate stacks or queues for different topics. It also allows "Does Not include" key words in the Topic Profiles. Different profiles can be designed for different teams, also.
  • Categorization of posts: Radian6 offers more categorization of posts than any tool I've used. This includes post tags, source tags, sentiment, priority, engagement level, classification level, and assign to user. Users can create their own system for how they want to use these, but it's not required.
  • Macros: One of my team's favorite things about Radian6 is that we can create macros. These are shortcut buttons within the engagement console that we can program to do multiple actions. For example, a macro for "Alumni Association" may mark a post positive, add a post tag of Alumni, add a high priority flag, and assign the post to a specific user. Multiple workflow actions taken care of with one click.
  • Analytics: This is still emerging but Radian6 does a pretty good job once you know what you're doing. only down side is that you have to open and log into a separate window to access it, which happens to be the Radian6 Dashboard. This is the same place you create and design your Topic Profiles and keyword groups, etc. The Analysis Widgets, Rivers of News, etc. provide a lot of flexibility for viewing things like mentions per time period, pie charts by post tag, and word clouds. It's also easy to export all posts from a chart.
  • Assigning and managing posts: User assignment is easy and flexible within Radian6. Users can quickly create their own My Tasks stack, as well as other stacks to monitor effectively.

Cons

  • Sharing access to any social media account outside the organization is tricky. Clients who wish to share access have to give up their free or paid accounts and be added as a team member within your organization as a paid seat.
  • Teams were a nice addition for granting/limiting access to social media accounts, but there aren't separate dashboards per team; all of the social accounts are managed by streams in tabs on one dashboard. With more than a few teams this is cumbersome and annoying.
  • Bulk upload by CSV sounds great in theory, but most clients cannot manage it (expert level competency needed to accomplish this task.)
Laura Pence profile photo
  • Export limit. 500 mentions is too little. Any topic could easily gather over 2000 mentions in my experience.
  • Keyword sentiment. This is the major turn-off but it is not unique only to Radian 6.The keyword-based analysis cannot properly interpret human emotions. The sentiment we received is not accurate but we just don't have the time to go through these mentions manually to get a favorability ratio.
  • Level of noise. Often times there are quite a few automated and duplicated message/advertising that should have been noticed, captured and filtered out automatically by the system.

At this time we are satisfied that Hootsuite offers the most of what we are looking for at the most reasonable price point. As the social media landscape and monitoring/scheduling software changes, so do our needs. We re-evaluate our tools semi-annually or as new tools emerge onto the market. If we find at any point that we aren't gaining an advantage, then we are open to switching products.

My team frequently uses this tool because it is user friendly and has very visual exports. We use some competitors, as well, but I think we will renew our subscription with Radian6.

Usability

I find Hootsuite to be very easy to use, though there are a couple things that need improvement. Overall, I think Hootsuite is an awesome tool and it helps me to do my job and do it well. I have been a fan for years, tried other products, but none of them come close to Hootsuite.

Gliches have made it a bit of a bind, particularly when you just want to 'click and send' a web article after you have read it - and then you have to deal with support (a great team but not always able to solve the problems with the gliches). Gliches with it loading properly, gliches with 'double ups in FB on the posts (the personal page and the business page if both clicked will lead to 2 lots of postings to each page!)

Hootsuite makes passing on articles from the web very easy- when it works! I have had a number of gliches with Chrome where it does not open properly and the solution (after some toing and froing with support) was to uninstall and reinstall. The support staff are always very helpful (which is great!) but the gliches..... well, they suck when you are already busy!

• We initially received dedicated online training for our team which was delivered by our account rep. This was pretty effective since it happened after our data had been loaded into the system and it had been configured for specific needs our organization. The training was perhaps a bit shallow though, as it was only an hour long. Online videos are available to be taken individually, and these have been useful.

Implementation was pretty simple. Just a matter of giving the account rep a list of our search terms and having him set the system up to pull the data we wanted to see. Once this had been done, we tweaked it with his help. Process was pretty smooth, although there was some back and forth until it worked the way we wanted.

Alternatives Considered

We actually find that all of the different social programs help in different ways. I would say Hootsuite Pro is better than Buffer or Sprout Social by far, however, it's not as powerful in analytics or data scraping as their other tool called uberVU, which we also pay for and use daily.

Radian6 is better in terms of listening and monitoring, but lacks slightly in scheduling.

Return on Investment

  • Hootsuite helped us to break down communications silos and communicate efficiently across departments.
  • Hootsuite gives us that extra "manpower" to schedule communications strategically. We know the message will be sent out when it needs to be.
  • Hootsuite has helped increase follower engagement because of the ease of monitoring our accounts with Hootsuite.

  • Better Customer Service.
