The Hootsuite free version is great for small businesses that do not need extremely detailed tracking. It can easily publish content across multiple social media formats. I have not had any issues in content failing to publish because of software error. The at-a-glance analytics provides a lot of information when targeted a specific age range or the time when subscribers are online. It has worked well for my private business.

Social Studio

Social studio is well-suited for environments where multiple social media channels are being managed by more than one individual, allowing for shared access and collaboration. There's no reason it wouldn't work equally as well for an individual user without a team needing shared access.

Pros

Hootsuite

  • Mobile App is very intuitive
  • Easy to schedule content
  • It is very simple to add social media accounts
Trish Lofton profile photo

Social Studio

  • Social Listening - boolean search queries that can be narrowed down by source and language, as well as location, to ensure it's relevant to the brand.
  • Owned Channel Monitoring - pulling owned content/comments into streams for moderation, engagement and review.
  • Publishing - scheduling, drafting, tracking brand owned social posts.

Cons

Hootsuite

  • Retaining connection to social accounts has been quite unreliable for us, particularly our Facebook Business account. When this connection breaks, Hootsuite essentially becomes useless until the connection is repaired, which often requires an arduous manual removal and re-adding of permissions.
  • Comment management is in some stage of depreciation, and it's not clear to what degree we can expect that functionality to work going forward.
  • As a new user, streams are not well-explained by a tutorial and aren't particularly intuitive to figure out on one's own. They're a great tool once you know how they work, but it would be nice to have a little more exposition provided by Hootsuite right off the bat.

Social Studio

  • I would have loved a library function for all the images I continually post on social.
  • I wish I could have dragged content on the calendar. For instance, if I had a post scheduled at 3:00 but I needed to move it to 5:00, I wish I could have just dragged the post on the calendar to the 5:00 slot, rather than opening the post and editing the scheduled time.
  • When too many posts were on the calendar, it looked very cluttered.

At this time we are satisfied that Hootsuite offers the most of what we are looking for at the most reasonable price point. As the social media landscape and monitoring/scheduling software changes, so do our needs. We re-evaluate our tools semi-annually or as new tools emerge onto the market. If we find at any point that we aren't gaining an advantage, then we are open to switching products.

It is very easy to work with and our SF Support Team is so strong, that we work through any issues and we know that the roadmap for the product will provide greater opportunities.

Usability

Hootsuite

Hootsuite 10.0

Its UI is very busy, the result of many years of adding features as the number of social media platforms exploded underneath them, and the lack of platform-specific features (whether for streams, posting, reporting, anything) reflects it. Nonetheless, for free management & quasi-updated stream viewing, it still remains the original and classic. The UI's lackings aren't in its 1990 borders-and-table-bezel glory but rather its not supporting platform specific features (such as image sizing, see my earlier points) which can be so critical. Too many fly-in's and fly-outs as well as the very different designs resulting from left-menu selections for mode really make it an anxious UI to use.

It looks good, is easy to use and totally customisable to individual users. It does everything I need in one place. I spend many hours of everyday in this platform and I still like it!

Gliches have made it a bit of a bind, particularly when you just want to 'click and send' a web article after you have read it - and then you have to deal with support (a great team but not always able to solve the problems with the gliches). Gliches with it loading properly, gliches with 'double ups in FB on the posts (the personal page and the business page if both clicked will lead to 2 lots of postings to each page!)

Hootsuite makes passing on articles from the web very easy- when it works! I have had a number of gliches with Chrome where it does not open properly and the solution (after some toing and froing with support) was to uninstall and reinstall. The support staff are always very helpful (which is great!) but the gliches..... well, they suck when you are already busy!

I am able to contact support directly via email rather than through an account manager. I get a support auto response immediately with a case number. I usually get an initial response from a support person via email within a 24 hour period and then if it's not resolved quickly I get further phone of email support until the matter resolved. I always get an email asking if I am happy with the resolution before the case is closed

Nothing, it takes 2 minutes to associate accounts (note, social accounts cannot have been associated with any HootSuite previously else it'll deny permissions to HootSuite's request) HootSuite, couldn't be easier.

Alternatives Considered

Hootsuite

I first evaluated Hootsuite seven years ago in a past life. I evaluated it against Buffer and Sprout Social. I found it to be generally better than Buffer in most ways. I like Buffer's clean interface more but it's heavily limited compared to Hootsuite. The pricing of Buffer is better, but you do get what you pay for. We currently use Buffer in my main job and it has reliability issues that Hootsuite does not. I loved Sprout Social and it offered some features that were really cool and an attractive user interface but the pricing was prohibitive for a business that doesn't make quota via social channels. Bottom-line, if you need a low-budget option, probably go with Buffer knowing that you'll have issues—especially with LinkedIn frequently disconnecting itself. If you have the budget and social is a core part of your marketing strategy, I'd say definitely go with Hootsuite. If you have a lot of budget, and social is the main revenue stream for your business, then maybe look at Sprout too.

Social Studio has an easily accessible calendar view of content which helps with management of scheduled posts. Our agency also had a lengthy test trial of Social Studio because of our current Buddy Media contract so the transition was smooth and simple. Buddy Media and Social Studio are both owned by Salesforce
