HPE ProLiant DL

When we need new physical server hardware we go with [HPE ProLiant DL]. They are cost effective and they last. we have it as the back bone of our clustered Hyper-V environment and the hardware runs without issue. We also use it as the backbone of our stand alone servers as well. We have a [HPE ProLiant DL] backup server and the RAID solution on board allows us to easily add and expand our raid volume to meet our data storage needs with ease.

IBM Power System S914

Even in the closed IBM Power ecosystem, the use cases for the S914 are somewhat limited. The trade off in resource requirements to properly support PowerVM and VIOS makes it difficult to reach any sane level of virtualization density on the platform. Even without VIOS, we were venturing into expansion chassis territory to support two LPARs with external storage and tape backup on each. It became a question of how much we thought we'd expand the platform vs. how much we wanted to invest up front. If I had to do it over, I would have gone with the S924 or S922 in our setup.

Pros

HPE ProLiant DL

  • Highly reliable. We've never had one go down unexpectedly in 11 years.
  • High performance. Current 380 G10s are configured with 1.5TB of RAM, always the shortest commodity in virtual environments.
  • Great manageability: iLO boards allow us to run headless without the Advanced license even.

IBM Power System S914

  • Very good cost / benefit ratio compared to other options on the market and for the intended purpose.
  • Scalability in terms of processing. The equipment is truly ideal to support containerized applications with high processing load.
  • Availability and fault tolerance. We have been working with these teams for more than three years and to date we have not been presented with a serious incident that puts our clients' data at risk.

Cons

HPE ProLiant DL

  • iLO Advanced - I feel like this is just a money grab. Give me the remote features, at least the remote console, with the purchase. I'd be OK with paying for the advanced license for more centralized functionality, but straight remote sessions? That should just be there.
  • Software entitlements and online interaction are a little wanting. This isn't the hardware per se, but enterprise products are often heavily tied to online services and tools and that could be a lot better.

IBM Power System S914

  • Power9 systems, like their predecessors are rare, thus the skills to manage them at companies are rare. This in turn means a reluctance of companies to take the hardware on as it's unlike anything else in their estate.
  • Some people find them pricey compared to just buying a pile of commodity x86 hardware.

Usability

HPE ProLiant DL

HPE ProLiant DL 9.2
Based on 11 answers
HPE ProLiant DL has a very intuitive interface for users, where not much training is required if it is their first time using it. I am able to quickly login and perform whatever tasks are needed on the server as the interface has a friendly design. It has a lot of detail as well, but the major functions are pronounced and this is very helpful in my everyday job.

The technical support of HP is great. Whenever we have any issue whether it is a hardware fault or some bug in the software or even just a misconfiguration the technical support team of HP is always there to assist us. In case of a hardware failure, they quickly locate and replace the faulty component with minimal to no impact on our business.

Alternatives Considered

HPE ProLiant DL

HPE ProLiant DLs are nice servers. They provide good performance, have scalability potential, are very reliable, and fit our expectations. Service support is high quality. In most cases, I prefer to buy HPE servers again and keep them as long as possible because they provide best of the best in uptime and usability.

IBM Power System S914

We have a strong relationship with IBM so our opinion may be slightly tilted in their favor given they are the enterprise standard. Nonetheless, we compared to Dell and ORACLE and went through a comprehensive evaluation process. IBM S914 ran SAP HANA and produced faster results for us. All 3 platforms were strong contenders and performed well but ultimately our strong relationship with IBM kept the competition from taking the sale. Our IBM pricing was inline with the others.

Return on Investment

HPE ProLiant DL

  • Allowed us to move forward with running web-based applications and to scale them as needed.
  • The lack of future driver support has made it difficult to consider upgrades, we may need to go with more expensive hardware in the future to be able to maintain upgrades.
  • While we have not realized all the business growth benefits we expected from this investment, we have had much more flexibility and options when we need to change our environment to meet the business needs.

IBM Power System S914

  • End of day processing time window reduces, in one example from 20 to 1 minute for the same processing load.
  • Backup times are reduced leaving more time for operation.
  • The system runs 24x7 giving the business the computing functionality it needs.
