Highlights

HubSpot is an inbound marketing, sales, and customer success platform with marketing automation capabilities at its core. SharpSpring is a sales and marketing platform and offers an agency-specific solution. Both products have a free, built-in CRM and are preferred by small and midsize businesses on TrustRadius.

Features

Both platforms offer core marketing automation capabilities such as email marketing and campaign management, landing page creation, lead management, lead scoring, and reporting and analytics. Each solution has a few unique features as well.

HubSpot is an all-in-one solution for marketing, sales, and customer service. Users note that the HubSpot user interface is easy to use and intuitive. Businesses can host their website on HubSpot’s CMS hub and have access to unique features like:

  • SEO optimization
  • landing page A/B testing
  • HubSpot Academy
  • live chat
  • chatbots

On the other hand, SharpSpring offers features that are crucial for marketing agencies. These include a month-to-month contract (instead of annual), a dedicated agency support manager, a re-brandable platform, single-sign-on (SSO), and a client account management dashboard.

Limitations

While both vendors offer a robust marketing automation platform, each product has a few limitations to be aware of:

When compared with SharpSpring, one limitation of HubSpot is its pricing model. Prices increase steeply as the number of contacts in your list grows. Add-ons like HubSpot’s CMS Hub can also be costly. Users on TrustRadius also note that the number of features available in HubSpot can sometimes be overwhelming, especially for new users.

Compared to HubSpot, SharpSpring does not have as many features, like SEO recommendations and optimization tools. Certain capabilities like campaign reporting and analytics are also not as strong as HubSpot’s reporting capabilities. SharpSpring customers on TrustRadius also note that some elements of the UI, such as the landing page builder, could be improved.

Pricing

Both products have a subscription pricing model based on the number of contacts included. However, HubSpot is billed annually, while SharpSpring customers have the option to pay month-to-month.

HubSpot has three different plan tiers with varying levels of features included. On its lowest-priced tier, businesses can pay $40 per month for 1,000 contacts. SharpSpring offers one plan level with prices determined by the number of contacts included. All SharpSpring customers have access to an unlimited number of users, unlimited support, and the full set of features.

Which Is Right For You?

Because of its pricing model, which starts increasing steeply around 20,000+ contacts, HubSpot is most affordable for businesses with a small contact list. However, HubSpot would also be a good fit for organizations that need a wide range of marketing and sales automation features.

SharpSpring is best suited for marketing agencies looking for a flexible yet powerful marketing automation platform. While HubSpot has Starter plans that cost less than SharpSpring, all SharpSpring customers have access to the platform’s full range of features and support.

HubSpot

HubSpot is well suited for many scenarios but the most prominent one in my role is following up with clients and/or prospects. It really helps me keep track of last interactions which includes notes, emails, calls, and meetings. Being able to see previous contact with a person helps me know where I have left off and also how I need to follow up. This is crucial for sales people since it is very difficult to remember all interactions and communications on your own.

SharpSpring

We have had a great few months onboarding with SharpSpring. The product itself works great, and we are constantly learning about more features that will allow us to maximize our use and the value it will provide to us and our clients. In addition to the tool from a technical perspective, the entire SharpSpring team has been helpful. They are also quick to respond, follow-up as appropriate, and ensure you know that your query is being looked after

Pros

HubSpot

  • Bring sales, marketing, support all together into one platform because they now offer each as it's own hub. You can purchase the ones you need, but they are all available. This is a strength because it follows HubSpot's company goal to help customers succeed and that can only be done when all areas of business succeed.
  • Listening to customers. HubSpot follows its customers' feedback and continues to improve the platform.
  • HubSpot is focused on customer success. You have a team ready to help you with products, support, and success so whether you're big or small or new or seasoned. HubSpot is there to help you succeed and they've done an awesome job of keeping that at their core.

SharpSpring

  • The social media content calendar makes planning and execution so much easier and less time-consuming.
  • Being able to easily curate content specifically for specific personas has been a game-changer.
  • I love visual workflows. Being able to see everything laid out in one place is super convenient and enables you to really wrap your head around what you're trying to build.

Cons

HubSpot

  • CRM function was too limited for us to use.
  • Would love to see greater flexibility with reporting dashboards.
  • Would love to be able to use spend/budget data from LinkedIn Ads connection.
  • Doesn't offer integration with CRM and suggested third-party partner was painful to work with.
  • Can't A/B test automated emails-- have to use workaround.
Sean Dunshee | TrustRadius Reviewer

SharpSpring

  • Onboarding can be overwhelming if you try to onboard without using materials and coaching provided. (Yes, that's me.) This is a robust platform and there is a lot of information to take in and get acquainted with to get the full effectiveness of the platform. You're going to be eager to start but take your time.
  • Patience required. There is a tendency to rush in to get started right away having seen the promise. SharpSpring provides high quality onboarding coaches for 60 days so nothing is missed.

Our business relies on the HubSpot platform to manage our marketing, sales and CRM processes. HubSpot marketing automation helps us define our activities and streamlines them in a cohesive and efficient way. Without HubSpot, we will have to revert to the 'old way' of doing everything with a variety of disparate systems.

We have been very impressed with all aspects of this software and the potential for it to radically change how we operate is huge! Support has been exceptional and we have discovered many extra uses for the software than originally thought. Not only will it give us benefits for our company's growth, but for our client's growth as well.

Hubspot shows you what do and makes it easy to find the help articles you need. Over all it shows the system status well. The only issue is when there are syncing issues so you'll have to save often and make sure to refresh so you know your changes synced with the server.

Mostly good, and they have upped their support game of late. One annoying thing they continue to do, though, is introduce changes to the platform with no notification...so you go in to do something, and you're stuck fiddling for a long time trying to figure out what changed and how to cope. But, again, generally when you contact support, they are helpful and do follow up to be sure your problem is solved.

With all the new features in HubSpot, the system can get a tad slow sometimes... That said, most of the time it is lightning fast and I have no problems. Because most of the integrations are API, they silently work in the background. I have not had trouble with lag due to HubSpot integration

I had a pretty serious programming issue in my onboarding period. I called and got to someone within 10 minutes. Their hold music was not elevator music, it was Andy Grammer's latest hits which made it seem like less time. They took note of the issue, tried what they knew, and then said they would work on the issue and be in touch soon. The issue was resolved within a day! And they were so pleasant to work with

They always resolve my issue as best as they can, explain in depth and always offer many different venues to talk to them, whether it is through email, phone, etc. I can trust that it gets to someone and doesn't go into a blackhole, and I felt like they actually listen and are not dismissive.

I did the 2-day classroom at HubSpot's corporate office in Cambridge. First off, it was amazing to see their corporate office in general. They have such a cool office environment. But it was also great to have the ability to learn in a workshop format with other HubSpot users and meet my Account Manager/ Inbound Marketing Consultant in person.

I went through Inbound Marketing University in 2006. Great training and helped my transition from traditional (outbound) marketing to inbound marketing that I've been able to apply to a number of businesses from wastewater and water reuse, to professional services and SaaS. Share information of value to build awareness and trust. Answer customers' questions in a transparent way to generate more qualified leads. Understand the difference between a marketing qualified lead and a sales qualified lead and put together a lead nurturing program. Your sales and marketing efforts will see significant ROI.

My biggest piece of advice for those who are implementing Hubspot is that you need to devote the time up front and learn how to use the product. Once you learn how to use Hubspot, it will be much more effective as well as much easier to use in the long run

Our custom application (CASL compliance) was not the typical on-boarding process for SharpSpring and they managed it very well. If we had to do it over, we would have let SharpSpring train us in their standard manner, trusting that the CASL compliance issues would sort themselves out in the process. Due to our own decisions we made our learning curve a little more difficult.

Alternatives Considered

HubSpot

We migrated from Marketo to HubSpot and noticed a difference nearly right away. Gone were hours of putting a campaign together through multiple folders only to have Marketo display the rainbow wheel of death and have the campaign disappear with all of your work. Additionally, we didn't need to have a full-time code on staff to generate beautiful and compelling email templates or landing pages. Working hand-in-hand, our new campaigns generated lead flow that helped our team deliver best-ever results and directly impact the bottom line.

SharpSpring

When I started to work at IHR, they used to manage their contacts with two CRMs. I configured the fields to homologize them. With Sugar, they only used to register the opportunities and the detail of each product that they sold. We started to configure the campaigns since SharpSpring and register all the communication there. We started to have reports that detailed the campaigns and we started to improve the efforts to generate more results. In the end, Sugar is only used as a history of old accounts, but all the operations are in SharpSping.

Scalability

While HubSpot initially, seven years ago, seemed built for SMBs it appears they have scaled their solution for larger enterprises. I do not have experience sending out 10 million-plus emails per month so I don't know how HubSpot would handle that. However, I do know that some other marketing automation platforms have had trouble with such scale. As such, I suggest HubSpot have one of it's enterprise customers share data on the length of time it takes to send out 1 million emails. Are we talking minutes, hours or days? Then decide what's right for you based on your business needs.

  • The SharpSpring ROI is noticed almost immediately due to their pricing structure being so low and the amount of tools offered so high.
  • It is also easy to monitor your ROI by tracking campaigns and seeing real time data to back up the efforts you are putting in
  • Being able to have transparency in a company is great and SharpSpring allows you to display charts, graphs and workflows to show exactly how well your marketing department is doing.
