IBM Event Streams is a high-throughput, fault-tolerant, event streaming solution. Powered by Apache Kafka, it provides access to enterprise data through event streams, enabling businesses to unlock insights from historical data, and identify and take action on situations in real time and at scale.
- great when you need to integrate applications without any message lost or duplicated and when transnationality is important - if you need the highest throughput possible and not much (or not at all) mapping is required, a system like Kafka is more appropriate
IBM Event Streams is well suited for companies developing event driven Microservices. One of the biggest challenger with microservices is that your data gets distributed into little silos - event streaming (or better known as event sourcing) allows you to get a central source of truth in your event store. We are taking this approach with IBM Event Streams and it is well suited for building an event streaming / sourcing architecture.
The development and the transformation capability is not so great. I believe IBM is looking to incorporate some of features of IBM APP Connect into API Connect.
The authentications features are no way close to CA API Management (f.k.a Laye r7).
The development experience is not as good as Apigee's.
The GUI should be improved. Maybe the product team should see the other API management tools in their offering.
It is the best on-premise application to cloud integration in the market. I guess IBM is planning to integrate IBM App Connect with the IBM API Connect solution.
You can do some really powerful things with this system. The overall design is an attempt to make configurable some of the routine tasks/common functionality, but allow for development/customization of the core of the application.
The product was very user friendly and extremely easy to get started with. The documentation is excellent and the free tier makes it very easy to get started with without having to make deep or long term financial commitments.
I met with the support team and they have deep technical and development understanding of the needs and the problems which IBM Event Streams addresses. If you are looking for a product backed by a highly technical support team then IBM Event Streams is probably the best choice. I was specifically impressed by the level of technical understanding my support team demonstrated.
We did not select Cast Iron as our iPaaS solution, it was the weakest competitor in the field that we evaluated. Our experience was that it was not nearly as easy to learn, without in-depth training and guidance, and the developer UI was extremely buggy. We subjected each of the vendors to a battery of integrations, from simple to challenging, and it fell short on each one. One of the most simple integrations was grabbing a CSV file from an FTP source, parsing the data, doing a small amount of transformation, then inserting that data into an Azure MSSQL DB. After 2 hours on the phone with the Cast Iron support team, we were still unable to get this working.
In Event Streams, applications send data by creating a message and sending it to a topic. To receive messages, applications subscribe to a topic. High availability and reliability. Event Streams offers a highly available and reliable Apache Kafka service running on IBM Cloud. Event Streams. Event Streams stores three replicas of your data to ensure the highest level of resilience across three availability zones.
In using downstreams, the minimal features and the rate of releases were slow, makes us feel that there's no upgrades and other than that there's poor marketing of the product.
The adoption around the service is low, requires focused marketing.
