IBM
It is used internally to transfer production logs, critical app data, and resources. The engineering department uses and maintains it from time to time. The transferred files are accessible to other concerned department(s), such as internal analytics. Fast data transfer, especially for app resources and a cache backup, is one problem this works best with.

VisualCron does accommodate continuous file processing. Like packing and unpacking compressed files, splitting or merging files, sending E-mail's and executing queries on databases. VisualCron in less suitable for performing very complex operations on files like, arithmetic with numbers, dates or amounts. Very complex job scripts become cluttered. Debugging Job scripts is not easy.

Pros
IBM
  • Ease of use: the Graphical User Interface doesn't require technical know-how to operate
  • Delivery Receipts: this allows us the confidence to know our files have reached our customers
  • Activity Monitor: lets you know how much data you have used, which is important for budgeting reasons.

Cons
IBM
  • Track upload/download usage OVERALL to know how much space is left
  • Track cloud storage overall to know how much space is left
  • More easily send single links to users for download, rather than full access (I know it is possible, but it is not intuitive)

NetCart DBA VisualCron
  • VisualCron should more specifically indicate the root cause of an error.
  • If copying a file goes wrong, VisualCron reports 'can't copy file'. I expect 'no read permissions from original' or 'no write permissions from destination'.
  • VisualCron offers no way to execute a Job script line by line
  • In VisualCron, nested loops cannot be created.

Questions and problems can be addressed to VisualCron 's support department via E-mail. I usually get a good answer from them fairly quickly. There is also a VisualCron forum where you can ask questions that will be answered by other VisualCron users.

Implementation Rating
IBM
The service provided by the authorized vendor was excellent. It was a good collaboration between the vendor IT team and internal IT team. They provided us with a timeline and we verified and approved that timeline. Daily stand ups and weekly meetups were conducted to update the internal team on progress. They were able to deliver all deliverables on time also, they conducted both alpha testing and beta version testing in time. Overall, they were able to complete the implementation in the given timeline.

IBM
These cloud storage products deliver sufficient space to store data and access and have an array of ways to transfer this data and keep it secure. IBM Aspera on Cloud focuses on the transfer and makes it a lot faster mainly due to its patented tech and altered UDP protocol. Since most of production code uses IBM services, it was natural to go with IBM Aspera on Cloud.

For simple processes, VisualCron is easier to use and maintain. For complicated processes, Quadient Inspire offers more options. The graphical representations of waiting, running or completed jobs is adequate for both products. The logging of job actions is better in Quadient Inpire as in VisualCron.

  • Aspera has changed the way we do business. We are now able to share huge file sets electronically, saving on external drives, shipping costs, time, and effort.
  • Our industry is very slow to commit to electronic alternatives to physical media. In less than three years, the positive results of using this service have caused over 70% of our user base to fully commit to electronic delivery, with the number of physical fulfillments quickly being driven toward zero.
  • Transfers within our own company, which formerly relied solely on FTP/HTTP transfer drives that would take days now take minutes with Aspera. Our software team relies on the speed and accuracy of the transfers.

  • With VisualCron, I need 3 times less time to get file processing right.
  • If a VisualCron job goes wrong I need twice as much time to find the problem.
  • Visualcron does not run on Linux but on Windows which can make an upgrade and reboot take up to 6 times as long.
