IBM Cloud Foundry

This really depends on which cloud vendor (if you have one) you are already working with. If you are already an IBM customer, then you should definitely give IBM Cloud Foundry a try. It is a great way to run your applications in the cloud, and does not have a steep learning curve as using Docker/Kubernetes, and in fact, can serve as an starting point to get you there overtime. You can usually find a buildpack (either directly from IBM or from the community) for your application, and the deployment usually does not require you to make any changes and you can get up and running in a few hours.

Cons

IBM Cloud Foundry

  • Need: VISUALIZATION CAPABILITIES! Particularly with the Conversation Service.
  • Need: Annotation capabilities for dialog nodes in Conversation Service.
  • Need: Search/querying capabilities in Conversation Service
  • Need: Clearer documentation of the S2T service. I had to use a third party website for an understanding of how to use this.

Alternatives Considered

IBM Cloud Foundry

We have used Red Hat which does not do business in Australia with people like us. They were a promising service (PaaS) while we were able to use the free version but as soon as we needed access to serious mobile-first services we had to pay and their policy meant we had to leave. Don't know why they don't want to do this sort of low-end business in Australia. We briefly looked at Heroku and others but quickly realised that since we demand enterprise strength security, strength insight, and reliability, we had to choose IBM Bluemix.

Return on Investment

IBM Cloud Foundry

  • Bluemix has allowed me to effectively serve the App industry more recently, especially with the new visual design implemented recently.
  • BlueMix offers a lot more customization of the Platform, rather than Infrastructure, giving me a big edge over other companies offering only AWS or Azure cloud services, and brings a lot more apparent value to my business.
  • The additional features, especially the Watson service subset offers a HUGE range of new and innovative technologies, especially in the realm of AI, that encourages my clients to test out new potential features, which leads to more sales as they increase there platform size and capability.
