IBM Cloud Virtual Servers

If you're already a customer of IBM, or using an IBM product through an ASP or reseller, or you need access to the hundreds of services IBM provides, it's a great place to build out your infrastructure.
If you're an established company slowly adding VMs, a smaller provider in the vast digital ocean of choices may be better.

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure is well suited for the projects which need to reduce the time, improve process efficiency and mainly to reduce the cost of the project, which give higher return on investment. Project[s] where there is not much Infrastructure, they can also prefer. It is less appropriate if the company already has on premises Infrastructure.

Pros

IBM Cloud Virtual Servers

  • The pricing options for services is awesome, offering bare-metal and other high-demand services at hourly rates.
  • Softlayer offers a huge assortment of high-powered services, such as Nvidia Tesla GPU computing, high-bandwidth connection options, and highly customizable bare-metal servers
  • All of Softlayers' plans and services are fully adaptable to to fit your needs, with a huge amount of options for both the services they offer and the management options available for those services.

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure

  • Block Volume provides durability and stability to data. IOPS can be changed on the fly. Always stay true to the promised performance.
  • Block Volume can be encrypted with ease to meet compliance. Can also be easily integrated with OCI vault service for extra security.
  • Object Storage and File Storage are other forms of storage that are secure and extremely easy to configure. FSS is one of the best in the industry when it comes to reliability and performance.
  • SSD block volumes are persistent in OCI unlike many other clouds.

Cons

IBM Cloud Virtual Servers

  • The IBM Cloud Web UI is very slow and not responsive
  • It would be nice to provide a direct way to choose a template image when creating a VSI
  • It would be nice if transient VSIs can be resized (CPU and Mem)

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure

  • Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Container Engine for Kubernetes (OKE) is a fully managed service that makes it a little hard sometimes to fine tune HPC workloads, for example AI/Deep learning training where a lot of data transfer and compute is needed.
  • The initial setup can certainly be improved with less steps to make it faster and easier to deploy compared to the competition, for example Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE).
  • Documentation and best practice documentation for OKE can be improved especially since there are not a lot of customer references available for large scale deployments that need fine tuned performance.

It is adequate, but you need to be ready to argue your point - which is fair enough, I suppose, but being given the opposite of the benefit of the doubt every time does not necessarily result in an enjoyable user experience.

Alternatives Considered

IBM Cloud Virtual Servers

I have had a dedicated server for 20 years. The last company, Softlayer, got bought out by IBM, and the transition has been a very good one. When I started using IBM for all my hosting solutions, I became a really big fan. Everything has been a user-friendly experience. The products have been really easy to work with.

We use Azure for most of company deployments, since we use Microsoft stack, but since we also use Oracle databases we were able to test OCI and compare the usage. I use OCI to test new features and solutions.

Return on Investment

IBM Cloud Virtual Servers

  • Freed up our team to focus on working on our own products and not having to worry about maintaining and patching servers.
  • On-demand procurement allowed our team to quickly spin up servers as needed and shut them down when work is done.

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure

  • Very useful since using Oracle applications on-premises; moving to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure heavily reduced administrative and other costs
  • Useful with scale-up and scale-down feature to reduce the cost immediately after the initial use
  • Easy on patching, security, and backups
  • For integration with other services or for applications other than Oracle, it's challenging and time consuming

Additional Pricing Details
Oracle Cloud Infrastructure is built for enterprises looking for higher performance, consistently lower costs, and easier cloud migration for their existing on-premises applications. OCI is consistently less expensive than AWS for a wide range of popular cloud workloads for several reasons: (1) in the area of networking, charges for outbound bandwidth are 74% less expensive than AWS, (2) for compute, Oracle delivers > 2X better price/performance over AWS for general purpose and memory-optimized instances. (3) for HPC workloads, AWS provides similar performance to Oracle, but is 44% more expensive and provides no local SSDs, half the RAM, no RDMS networking, and no performance SLA, and (4) for block storage, OCI offers as much as 20X the IOPS performance of AWS for less than half the cost.
