IBM Event Streams

IBM Event Streams is well suited for companies developing event driven Microservices. One of the biggest challenger with microservices is that your data gets distributed into little silos - event streaming (or better known as event sourcing) allows you to get a central source of truth in your event store. We are taking this approach with IBM Event Streams and it is well suited for building an event streaming / sourcing architecture.

TIBCO Enterprise Message Service

If you need a robust, extensible, reliable Enterprise Service Bus, with "Enterprise" being the key word here, TIBCO [Enterprise Message Service] will be able to fulfill every expectation. As proof of concept, or ad-hoc implementations, it might not be as well suited due to the infrastructure required.

Pros

IBM Event Streams

  • It scales very well.
  • It can handle a lot of traffic.
  • It can retain the events when our services have issues.

TIBCO Enterprise Message Service

  • Tibco EMS performs very well, and it meets our stringent performance requirements for corporate messaging backbone.
  • Tibco EMS scales well, and this is another of our stringent requirements.
  • Tibco provides good support for the EMS product, and continues to improve it. This is important as we don't want to use something that does not keep up with the changes in the technology landscape.

Cons

IBM Event Streams

  • Monitoring capabilities
  • Visibility into topics
  • Dashboard for visualization

TIBCO Enterprise Message Service

  • A bit of lag time between data sync and the data reaching the server for some of our field sites.
  • It still seems like a niche product for me with little community support. I didn't know about it before working for a company that deployed it.
  • Certain functionality is too complex to setup as compared to other products on the market.

This is because our newly developed applications will rely heavily on an event bus. This means that once these applications are developed and live, we will definitely need an event bus to run them on. Therefore the license will most probably be renewed at that point

Support Rating

IBM Event Streams

IBM Event Streams 9.1

Haven't really contacted support for IBM Event Streams related issues since I didn't take it to production yet, but the rating is based on my previous experiences with IBM support for products like IBM Case Manager, FileNet, DB2, WebSphere Application Server, DataCap, etc: the support team is usually very helpful and does not leave an issue open until it's resolved.

Implementation Rating

IBM Event Streams

IBM Event Streams 8.2
Based on 1 answer
The implementation process was relatively smooth and easy. Moreover, the IBM knowledge center along with some other sources like 3rd party training material, support guides, and help from experienced developers, made the development process easy and rewarding. We even had junior developers work on it and their feedback and productivity were excellent

Alternatives Considered

IBM Event Streams

We are still in the evaluation process. To enable an event streaming platform for enterprise, IBM Event Streams is a strong candidate due to the ease of use and setup in the cloud. There are many capabilities we are trying to understand to see if IBM Event Streams is the right fit for our needs. I would rate its platform behind Confluent Cloud.

TIBCO Enterprise Message Service

TIBCO Enterprise Message Service acts as a barebone service in our environment. Some applications use TIBCO Rendezvous, some EMS. In this way it was possible to evaluate the differences and I saw that EMS was more robust and open to different programming languages. In particular the integration with java was a good point.

Return on Investment

IBM Event Streams

  • It's one of the key backbones to support our backend services with zero administration required.
  • It ensures that we don't lose any events from our consumers.

TIBCO Enterprise Message Service

  • It promotes the event-driven a-synchronized architecture, boosting the service-oriented design change by decoupling the data generator and the data consumer.
  • Applications can be easily "attached" to the data flow to quickly roll out the business added values without having to risk the changes of existing applications or components.
