IBM Rational DOORS

DOORS works well for requirements management. It's better than using MS Excel especially for a large number of requirements at different levels.

Jama Connect

The Review Center is a very useful tool where you can share the project with read-only access to a large group and manage comments and reviews without giving access to the actual project page. The stats can be maintained on who has completed their review and progress can be monitored. It is well well suited for all SDLC methodologies and very effective in both Agile and Waterfall models. Automation of test runs and uploading of results with the application is still not possible at the moment. Needs to be stored in a spreadsheet and imported into Jama.

Pros

IBM Rational DOORS

  • Allows linking of information in different parts of the program.
  • Works fairly well with other programs like Excel and Word.
  • Has a layout that is familiar, with a ribbon-like bar at the top.

Jama Connect

  • Product requirements: a nice and easy way of writing requirements, keeping them classified and organized
  • Requirements review: the information to review is displayed intuitively in the User Interface and adding your review comments is enabled for every line item in an individual paragraph
  • Administration: for a cloud application the administrative features are extensive with an acceptable level of details

Cons

IBM Rational DOORS

  • Too complex for projects or businesses that don't really need the detail. It is basically overkill.
  • If you are new to IBM Rational tools, it may be a medium learning curve. You'd also need lots of training from your people, since, as usual, this tool shouldn't be managed alone.
  • It may seem old fashion compared to Jira and the current control tools used in IT industry.

Jama Connect

  • The newer versions of Jama seemingly do not show reviews with just the sections that have been changed. This makes navigation difficult as you have to go through each section to see if there have been changes made.
  • Jama connector used to come free for defect tracking (interfaced with JIRA), but now it does not so the process has become manual.

At the moment we are required by contract to continue to use the IBM DOORS software for our current client. Given that it can be expensive, if we were to use it after our current client's needs were met, we would have to secure other projects in order to justify the continued use of the software.

Jama Connect is not adding many extra features with their major releases. It showed launched new features, but those are not very useful for developers or creators working with Jama. From the performance side, Jama has been reduced it's performance in Jama 8 as compared to Jama 2015.5 from the functional perspective. The test suite must be provided by Jama to test the performance and function of things in our instance, but Jama doesn't provide it. Also, Jama requires a lot of manual intervention for adding users.

It's easy to use and learn. Not too complex and functionality can be extended by learning DXL.

Jama is mostly designed for requirement gathering, but that can be possible using JIRA if we add only approval type of plugin for special requirement types. Jama's performance and features do not improve on a periodic basis i.e. with each release. Even bug fixes take a lot of time and they don't care about customer impact.

Jama is available most of the time if it is used within the application's boundary. Jama has very good availability if we use very high hardware servers. Sometimes we face issues if there are batch operations running.

With performance compared to JIRA, I do recommend Jama in this case. Jama provides very good performance, it loads immediately for any of the items and searches any item immediately. Performance is really good in all of the operations including creating stories, epics, item types or other support operations or report generation.

Internal to our company we have several experts who have extended DOORS functionality to include some great features. And these folks are well regarded by IBM as DOORS experts in the industry.

They typically answer within minutes of posting a ticket, and then you have a clear expectation of what the issue is, how to diagnose it, how long will it take to get resolved, and in which version a given problem is resolved, or if there is a patch for hosted services. They have a number of support people, and all of them are top-notch.

Jama 2015.5 implementation is very smooth and no need for much manual work. Jama 8 has many challenges and we can not install it as smoothly as Jama 2015.5. Initially, Jama didn't provide the Jama 8's installer files or zip files and they were just providing docker files to everyone (which was really strange). It is the worst that they don't provide all the files at a time. Why should they tell us where we should deploy, and why only a dockerfile? I am not very satisfied with Jama implementation.

Alternatives Considered

IBM Rational DOORS

Requisite Pro (and Rational Requirements Composer, it's successor) is more simple and focused on requirements. Is like a part of DOORS and can be suitable to smaller projects. IT people on the other hand prefer agile tools like JIRA. Of course if the project is big enough, DOORS is a good option to consider.

Jama Connect

Jama has a lot going for it. Although it may not seamlessly plug in from the get-go into ALM tools or be an ALM tool itself, I believe it has a very bright future. In comparison to Rational Doors, we believe for our needs, it is much more of an bang-for-the-buck and feature rich for the amount of time needed to get up and running. We believe it is also more stable than Doors. Since it is not an ALM application, it would not be fair to compare it to one but if Jama expands into that market aggressively, it can be a viable player.

There is no horizontal scalability available in Jama, we have only one choice to scale it vertically. But vertical scalable applications always have limitations to grow. In this case, Jama doesn't support horizontal scalability functions like multi-node architectures with a shared drive for the home directory.

Return on Investment

IBM Rational DOORS

  • Having this software available was mandatory, but allowed us to win a bid for a project that has led to other work.
  • We have gained major experience and recognition due to our use of this software.

Jama Connect

  • All the innovation-centric companies are adopting Jama. They have big customers like SpaceX, NASA, Fairchild Semiconductor to name a few. They also have very small companies and startups as their customers. One can conclude that the ROI is surely positive and significant.
