It's well suited for firms with large or growing fleet of devices. I can only say about macOS device management, as for mobile devices we have a different solution. But I had a chance to play around with mobile device management using Jamf on one of the trainings using Sandbox, and I can say that you can totally use it for managing iOS/iPadOS/Android devices as well.

Hypervisor based agentless security this product excels at. It provides thorough protection for your VM's. The web filtering product that comes with it also does a great job filtering out malicious websites from being accessed by users with a very user friendly prompt that they are going to a website which has been found to be malicious. This is particularly useful when it comes to VDI.

Pros
Jamf Software, LLC
  • Jamf Pro's Self Service is a great mechanism for making software available to end uses as they need it.
  • Jamf Pro is also great for creating plans called PreStage Enrollments that allow for computers to skip many of the setup screens, as well as automating account creation.
  • Jamf Pro in combination with Apple Automated Device Enrollment (formerly DEP) allows for devices to supervised and managed, this combination allows for locking, remote wipe of devices, and finding locations of devices when put into lost mode.

Cons
Jamf Software, LLC
  • Training options are terrific, but costly.
  • Finding what you need in Jamf Pro can be tough at times. The interface is not what I would call friendly.
  • You'll need static credentials for Jamf Pro. They don't integrate with the Jamf Account, and it doesn't offer 2FA. SSO is an option, but it's not simple to set up.

  • Trend Micro has very little room for improvement. I am using version 9.6 at this time and it is extremely reliable. Some of the upgrades were not completely intuitive, but in those cases Deep Security support came through with documentation that covered all the bases.

We stepped away and are looking at different products that integrate with our entire fleet MDM solution rather than focusing specifically on Apple products. An all in one solution fits our needs better and is more cost-effective in the long run. Jamf Pro needs to improve some features and support but overall its a good product.

Usability
Jamf Software, LLC
Jamf Pro has done pretty much anything we've needed with little setup headache. If we hit a wall, the Jamf user community and tech support departments both are more than willing to help solve problems. Tech support is excellent, but the surprising thing is the user base is by far the biggest resource. Jamf users love to help each other, by directly chatting about issues, posting best practices, or just posting info on the forums.

Jamf Support is very responsive and usually assists in any challenge we are tackling. They are also very transparent when they are allowed to be. I personally love our Jamf Pro support rep and don't fear messaging their support team.

Trend Micro's support is pretty decent, we have had issues in the past and they have been fairly responsive to us and our complaints. Depending on how severe the issue was. Any ticket that had a high priority was handled very shortly especially when we contacted our account rep even if it was after hours, we were still able to get support within a short time period.

Online Training

The training session was beneficial because it expanded my knowledge about Jamf products and really learn what I am capable of doing with Jamf Pro in terms of managing Apple computers and devices. Immediately after the training course, I was able to implement what I learn to our cloud instance.

Alternatives Considered
Jamf Software, LLC
We have a two-page document [that] identifies all the key features and functionality that we rely on while using Jamf Pro to manage our Mac fleet. Each time we're asked to compare and contrast other client management platforms, they all come up quite short of being able to provide the same functionality that we rely on with Jamf Pro. From there we then have to consider [the] cost for additional products to fill the gap, or lower our users' expectations. That is a non-starter.

We selected trend micro to take the AV scans and filtering out of the hands of the Windows and Linux vm's we have deployed and move it to the hypervisor level. This has led us to be able to deploy only a single DSVA per host and can protect all VM"s that are on that hosts. This has allowed for more time being spent on other priority security tasks.

Return on Investment
Jamf Software, LLC
  • Jamf [Pro] has made locating iPads during the Pandemic so much easier. With the information provided by Lost Mode, we are able to show the end-user where their iPad was last located. This also allows us to have the iPads returned, even from the opposite coast of the US. This is invaluable and eases the loss of equipment during an already difficult and stressful time.
  • Jamf [Pro] has allowed one or two people to manage 3000 iPads at four different schools. I know the impact it has had on our little district and I often say that the end-user only sees the magic that happens. It makes it easier for me to make that magic work.
  • Jamf [Pro] has allowed me to be much more efficient, saving time, which we all know time is money.

  • 100% positive ROI. Without Deep Security we would have to leverage and endpoint protection management solution like Sophos or SEPM (Symantec). Although both are good products, from a cost perspective it would have hit us much harder. Trend Micro Deep Security scales very nicely.
  • Since Deep Security actually has zero (or at least unnoticeable) resource footprint on monitored VMs, it is a huge cost benefit for us. As previously mentioned, actual antivirus clients installed on each virtual machine (VM) would have significantly affected performance. This would have cost us much more additionally in paying for additional resources to allocate over VMs in the VMware environment. Deep Security is almost completely unintrusive from a resource perspective.
  • Also, from a layered security perspective, it helps us meet our goals; and since the price of Trend Micro Deep Security quite reasonable, it is that much easier to get approval for this specific internal layer of security.
