TIBCO Jaspersoft

Well suited for formatting needs and specific export types.
Great for creating static scheduled reports because they are easily editable by non-developers.
Less suited for non-developer level users if looking for an ad hoc tool as I believe they still need to do more work in making the ease-of-use of their ad hoc tool so that it is more accessible to entry-level users to reporting software.

TIBCO Spotfire

Suitable for even large numbers of data points in both the chemical or biological data domains. Also powerful when calculated columns are to be inserted into tables. The filter and label function is a very powerful feature when subsetting data within one Spotfire project. It is also capable of exporting sheets to PDF format, so it is also convenient to share key findings with others. It is less appropriate for chemical data in less mainstream formats (e.g SDF, MOL2).

Pros

TIBCO Jaspersoft

  • Excellent easy process of embedding Jaspersoft into a website.
  • Easy process of working with Jaspersoft elements through Visualize.js
  • Helpful Community if you take into consideration the communities of other BI similar products

TIBCO Spotfire

  • Data visualization: TIBCO Spotfire quickly reveals trends through its robust visualization tools. Many different graphical representations of the data are immediately available and can be used effectively with either default settings or can be tweaked to the specific needs of an audience.
  • Extensibility: TIBCO Spotfire allows for the implementation of just about any data analysis you can think if. If the analysis that you want to run is not already built in, TIBCO Spotfire includes the option to write R or IronPython code to extend its capabilities.
  • Shareability: When you develop a tool or visualization in TIBCO Spotfire, you can publish it in such a manner that your audience only needs a link to view it: they don't even need to have Spotfire installed on their own machine. Web publishing maintains the interactivity of your visualizations and allows users to download data sets for their own use.

Cons

TIBCO Jaspersoft

  • While many of the advanced report writing features of iReport are available through the GUI, customization requires knowledge of Java. We often need to produce reports that are exportable to Spreadsheets with formulas and formatting intact. As consultants we can produce this quickly for our clients, but the GUI tools are not as friendly as they could be.
  • While Jaspersoft does offer the Talend Integration Server which is a web-app and execution server of it's own, the basic ETL tool requires some sophisticated knowledge to deploy scheduled jobs on Linux or Windows servers. Managing the libraries and status of the jobs can become non trivial as they grow in number.
  • Finding qualified consultant like RLWilliams Consulting can be difficult.

TIBCO Spotfire

  • Sometimes difficult to know what product and package fits your products
  • Confusing documentation
  • Not very comprehensive user access rights

We've converted our library of reports to use Jaspersoft. Our clients have had a taste of Jaspersoft and we've had very positive feedback from those interactions. Our internal employees have had great success using iReports and JasperStudio to create very robust reports that better show the data our clients expect to see. Overall, our experiences with Jaspersoft have been great and it's proven to be a very good decision for the direction of our business.

The end results are pretty good but the journey to get there is not very smooth and requires solid skills in many technical areas thereby making it ineffective for just plain business users. For them, just consumption is the only practical way to go.

The Spotfire client is very reliable. There are sporadic crashes that are made worse due to the lack of an auto-save. Most product upgrades are uneventful. The one major issue we experienced was quickly responded to by Tibco. Our system admins have indicated that the Spotfire servers and the ancillary web-player systems are reliable, but requires time to learn how to deal with the unique nature of the web player and resource loading.

Never have we had a performance issue with it. The "slow" reports are due to the speed of the data being returned from the database, not Jasper.

The client on its own is impressively quick with rendering numerous visualizations, loading large amounts of data, and joining several data tables. Performance begins to degrade with the use certain data transformations (eg. pivoting data within the client), calculation expressions (eg. "Over" expressions), and large data aggregations within the Spotfire data engine. We achieved significant performance gains by having our data teams aggregate data at within our data views (before it reaches Spotfire), employing data-on-demand (user initiated data queries in a report), and by employing data limiting options within visualization reports.

I've had several issues using and implementing Jaspersoft over the last year. I've run into unique situations and strange bugs that seem to make no sense. Every time I've run into a brick wall on how to fix my issue, I've been able to create a support case with Jaspersoft and have a representative helping me within minutes. They've all been very knowledgeable about their product and every single issue I've had has been resolved. Granted, some of the issues took some creative solutions, but at the end of the day, I have a production environment that runs well and I know that if I run into any future issues, I'll have the assistance I need within minutes, not days.

Tibco is very responsive to each of our questions. They are quick to jump on webex and troubleshoot issues with techs and/or receive files to analyze on their own. On occasion, Tibco has pushed back on their willingness to recognize certain issues that we have located.

It did the job of getting us to our deadline we set for ourselves for initial launch. The customer we launched the product for was also there to learn about it at the same in order to better understand the capabilities. This helped greatly so that the customer was on the same page on what was possible when using jaspersoft. I think most people would not want their customers aware the product they are using is third-party but in this case it was a new experience for us both and so as we learned more about jaspersoft, we both had better communication on what the future road map was for their business needs in BI.

We've repeatedly subscribed to a two-day in-person training course that focuses on the visualization aspects of Spotfire. While the trainers are reluctant to deviate from the curriculum it has generally received good reviews in helping users venture into the basic aspects of Spotfire. This course does not touch Spotfire's data engine or expressions used with visualizations. We've also had a one-day "ad-hoc" session that focused on Spotfire's data engine. This format was limited to a small group and tailored to dedicated developers. While this was a great course, it is one of the only ways to understand Spotfire's data engine other than trial and error.

Alternatives Considered

TIBCO Jaspersoft

Tibco Jaspersoft is a stronger competitor than the Microsoft Reports and ETL products. The flexibility and power of using the software, multi platform and deployment and monitoring has no comparison to what you use.It would be interesting to integrate some features of predictive controls of Tibco Spotfire in Tibco Jaspersoft ETL and Jaspersoft Reports.More robust features in the BPM type documentation in the Job ETL.Also more features and types of Jobs of the different flavors of Talend products.

We have tried both Microsoft products. While we are still heavy users of Access, the reporting capabilities of Spotfire are much more useful. We often have to build individual reports in a short time frame. These reports take time to build in Access but can be thrown together on the fly in Spotfire. The simplicity of Spotfire made it preferable to Microsoft BI. Spotfire allows us to manipulate the data much easier than we were able to do in Microsoft BI. Microsoft BI would have been okay for financial data but was almost useless for engineering data.
