TIBCO Jaspersoft

Well suited for formatting needs and specific export types.
Great for creating static scheduled reports because they are easily editable by non-developers.
Less suited for non-developer level users if looking for an ad hoc tool as I believe they still need to do more work in making the ease-of-use of their ad hoc tool so that it is more accessible to entry-level users to reporting software.

TIBCO Spotfire

Great for creating the visualizations to go with data, especially if you can already picture how you want to represent it. Not so good if you have to do any actual stats on the data, unless you're going to integrate python scripts.

Pros

  • Large number of controls in the palette to create a Job. Support to Java code.
  • Dynamic job call and flexible output (column) in dynamic column query.
  • Support development and deployment on Windows, Linux and Mac platforms.
Pedro G. Jiménez profile photo
  • Dynamic visualizations, I like that it's intuitive to flip between different ways of seeing the data until I can get the story the data is telling.
  • Importing data, I like being able to import a csv (or in the past, use custom sql to query a db) then do multiple transformations (pivot, calc cols, etc.) and create the visualizations I need. Especially beneficial that I can add to or replace the initial imported data and as long as I match the format the transformations and visualizations will update.
  • As great as it is to view data in Spotfire, the universal reporting standard is powerpoint. Spotfire does a good job allowing me to export the visualizations I have created to a format everyone can view.

Cons

  • Need to improve in providing feature for localization for start of day and currency
  • Support to phoenix driver
  • Should provide more flexibility to write custom css
Suresh Mende profile photo
  • Understanding the full benefits of the program takes time and experience.
  • Some SQL language requires different setting/filters/statements than Teradata.
  • Some of the options that are used are too buried to easily locate.

We had to stop paying our support to get Jasper management to pay attention to our issues. We are now working closely with them to try to resolve these problems. If they can be resolved to our satisfaction, we will continue with them. If not, we will look elsewhere.

Even though Spotfire does have bugs and inconsistencies and other shortcomings, it's certainly doing a great job overall. It provides great value for the money and is user-friendly enough.

Usability

The end results are pretty good but the journey to get there is not very smooth and requires solid skills in many technical areas thereby making it ineffective for just plain business users. For them, just consumption is the only practical way to go.

Reliability and Availability

We've never had an outage of the software itself. If it was unavailable, it was due to a network outage, not a problem with Jasper.

Even though, it's a rather stable and predictable tool that's also fast, it does have some bugs and inconsistencies that shut down the system. Depending on the details, it could happen as often as 2-3 times a week, especially during the development period.

Performance

TIBCO Jaspersoft9.0

Never have we had a performance issue with it. The "slow" reports are due to the speed of the data being returned from the database, not Jasper.

Considering the amount of data Spotfire supports, and the ability to connect to so many different data sources, the performance is really strong; specially, if you are working with v5.5

Support

TIBCO Jaspersoft7.2
Based on 19 answers
We have been several times in the need of support from Tibco, mostly to setup and fine tune the production environment, and every time their support was always willing to help. Whenever the issue was complex, and eventually due to customizations done by us at their software, we can anytime reach to our Customer Success Manager, who is available to enter and contribute into our internal discussions with all our teams, so to be involved in our product implementation roadmap, and connecting back to Tibco support team, to provide clarity on our needs and deadlines. The result is our requests get resolved brilliantly.

Breadth of Deployment

No answers on this topic
In previous roles as well as my current vendor consultation role, I have seen Spotfire start in one business unit and expand to the entire company. Operations, research, IT, accounting, finance, and executives all end up performing ad hoc analyses or reviewing reports through Spotfire. Typically their are analysts or developers in each business unit or group that build Spotfire analyses. Decision makers typically review analyses through the webplayer. The ability to allow everyone in an organization to review visualizations is very simple through the webplayer.

Alternatives Considered

When we were a VB6 shop we used a product called Data Dynamics Reports which where pre-canned reports that we would develop inside the VB6 IDE environment and embed in the desktop application. So while the multi-tier web approach is a significant improvement there is no direct comparison due to the wide gap between architectures.

I had used Spotfire during an internship and wanted to expose my students to this tool. I appreciate how TIBCO worked with me to get educational licenses for my students to use. Students enjoyed having a comparison with Tableau which they had all used.

Spotfire has the ability to connect to all data sources I have tried to connect it to. I give it an 8/10 because once you connect to a data source, there does not appear to be a simple way to edit that data connection (meaning if you wrote SQL to remove a subset of data, I have not found the way to alter that SQL later to change the subset of data).

Return on Investment

  • Jaspersoft has decreased our productivity due to the excessive time we've had to spend troubleshooting errors.
  • We have seen positive results from our data warehousing and reporting efforts.
  • Dashboards have allowed us to communicate important business insights throughout our company.
Tim Buterbaugh profile photo
  • I am not sure about the licensing costs.
  • We used the free Cloud version for a short duration.
  • Helped achieve the goals of the class where my students were doing data analytics in the Healthcare domain.
