JDA Software

JDA WMS is a tier 1 solution for warehousing environments. Due to its price, it may not be suitable for smaller operations. Since the system allows for multiple clients, and since my company is a 3PL, JDA WMS works well for 3PL providers.

RedPrairie

The size and scope of the operation is the main question. In a smaller environment, or one that does not require a complex Warehouse Management Solution (WMS), RedPrairie may not be a good fit.

Pros

JDA Software

  • JDA WMS is highly configurable to handle any of our customers' requirements. These configurations do not require customization work, rather setting up the system to allow for customer needs such as processing and reporting.
  • JDA WMS can handle high volumes of transactions well.
  • JDA WMS has a robust and great integration layer which allows for data transfer inbound and outbound from the system.

RedPrairie

  • RedPrairie is very customizable by internal staff. Being a 3PL, we have many different customer requirements. RedPrairie has easily met them all. We try not to customize, as the product works well out of the box. But we do create custom reports and data extracts that customers require. And we can do those modifications ourselves with no RedPrairie support or additional cost.
  • RedPrairie allows for accurate and efficient use of warehouse labor. Transactions are tracked and rules are in place to keep inventory accurate. RedPrairie has a sophisticated work queue engine that hands out the best piece of work to warehouse workers and allows them to work as efficiently as possible.
  • RedPrairie has a robust integration layer that allows for data input and output to nearly any host or destination.

Cons

JDA Software

  • JDA WMS is a pricy solution compared to other WMS vendors. Perhaps they should offer "lighter" versions for smaller customers.
  • JDA acquired RedPrairie a few years ago, and in doing so, has lost some of their "small company" support and customer care.
  • Although integration and label printing are strong features of JDA WMS, they require expertise to set up. It would be nice if those aspects of the system were easier to manage.

RedPrairie

  • Doing wall-to-wall counts and sending to another system, for example SAP. There is no count over-lay to send to SAP, must do manual adjustments in SAP to balance to RedPrairie after an inventory count.
  • There are NO reports! Everything must be exported to Excel and then reports can be manually created.
  • Enhancement request process - working with requests from "like Companies" and gathering information to work to THE BEST solution for all
  • LESS red tape....has gotten ugly since JDA took over!
  • Inventory Adjustment efficiency to do more than one at a time and via LXE
  • Line Supply via Directed Work
  • Easier/cleaner substitution process for outbound orders
  • Bayrow & pallet consolidation
  • Yard Trailer Management Report
  • Shared Yard Management

JDA support is not the greatest and their management since taking over has much to be desired.

Alternatives Considered

JDA Software

JDA WMS was a large step up from our legacy Infor solution. It filled many gaps that we couldn't fill with Infor's system. Rather than continuing to build solutions in-house to account for customer requirements, we decided to implement JDA WMS and use all of that system's capabilities to handled what we needed in our warehouses. Granted, Infor's solutions have probably improved since 2007 when we changed, but those were my experiences back when we changed WMS providers.

RedPrairie

Biggest impact for Finance is not having the inventory overlay for wall-to-wall inventory counts from RedPrairie to another system (ex: SAP) and having to do manual adjustments in the other system to make it then match RedPrairie after the count. Also, having to do inventory adjustments in RedPrairie one LPN at a time is very time consuming since you cannot do multiple lines at a time & they cannot be done on the LXE.There are also NO RedPrairie ONLY inventory adjustments which is a good thing for inventory accuracy! WMS had them and it caused a nightmare keeping the books straight with SAP. Planners never knew what they had or which system was correct. Legacy WMS is becoming obsolete so were needed to switch to "something" and RedPrairie was chosen. I was not part of the selection team, so I am not aware of what other options they looked at

Return on Investment

JDA Software

  • Having JDA WMS licensed and available for potential customers has greatly helped our sales process. Mentioning that we use this software has kept our company in bids that we otherwise would not have been invited to participate in.
  • Our company went through some attrition, so we had more licenses for JDA WMS than we needed. In that aspect, we were paying too much for the system usage. However, JDA sales worked with us to decrease our licenses to support the smaller number of users that we currently have.
  • Although not monetized, the fact that JDA WMS is customizable to all of our customer needs has kept our clients satisfied with the product and encouraged them to keep our relationships.

RedPrairie

  • Increased employee efficiency on the Receiving dock with ASNs (advanced shipment notifications). Faster to receive and store.
  • Decreased efficiency on the Shipping dock at sites that do customer loads with lots of cuts and adds due to complex process for substitutions.
  • Increased inventory accuracy with cycle count feature.
