Despite my frustrations with our team's specific setups, I have to say that JIRA is truly a wonderful project management tool for large teams and companies. If your team is very small, simpler software would probably meet your needs. But JIRA offers so many features, giving you granular control over every element of your board, and integrating seamlessly with Confluence and Salesforce. JIRA has become the hub of our product team.

- Manages Epics (projects) very well. Tasks can be adjusted easily along with their corresponding Story Points. The Backlog can be easily managed by moving Tasks around as needed.
- Notifications can be automatically sent out (if setup) to the Developer when new work is assigned.
- Epics/Tasks/backlog items can be managed through an easy to use drag and drop process.
- Agile. Easy to work with (very intuitive)

- Make certain someone on the team has JIRA experience or have a vendor support you in the implementation

While there are no fundamental problems with JIRA, I'm unsure that I will be working myself very closely with users of Atlassian Confluence. The client base I am concerned with tend to be more integrated with Amazon, IBM BlueMix / Watson, open source LAMP/PHP (WordPress, MediaWiki) & those that rely on more proprietary CMS would tend to use Sharepoint not Confluence. JIRA seems to me to stand or fall with the rest of the Atlassian silo or suite, as it is not closely integrated with Sharepoint or mediawiki based reporting or knowledge management. Data interchange standards in this area are weak so Microsoft, open source LAMP projects using Phabricator, and Atlassian JIRA seem to be three distinct silos, with Amazon, Google & IBM offering their own tools for similar needs.

I think JIRA has a lot of complexity for a less technical user and I am torn between whether that is an essential problem. I tend to believe that users should choose the tool that fits the work; this means does it make sense for the typical user and how much integration with other systems does it provide? If both of these things are high, I would say the tool deserves high consideration. As a technical tool I think JIRA falls squarely in line with technical expectations - it also provides a high degree of integration possibilities with other tools. I suppose if you were forced to choose one tool you should plan on a staggered approach to rolling it out, starting with the technical team guided by someone with a process background.

The biggest plus that Jira offers is the way it allows you to customize everything. I love the mobile app too, it allows you to keep track even if you are away from desktop. You can easily integrate other software (Slack, GitHub) with Jira and search within it easily.

One of their strong points i stheir documentation. Almost all of the basic set up needed within JIRA is available online through atlassian and its easy to find and very precise. The more critical issues need to be addressed as well and hence the rating of 8 instead of a 9.

Take your time implementing Jira. Make sure you understand how you want to handle your projects and workflows. Investing more time in the implementation can pay off in a long run. It basically took us 5 days to define and implement correctly, but that meant smooth sailing later on.

The capabilities of JIRA are endless and can be adapted to fit nearly any organizations individual needs. JIRA also has a vast capability to integrate with a variety of software products used throughout many different companies.
