Silk
K2 works well in our mixed-use virtual environment. I would not hesitate to place any workload on K2, it has always performed well. We use fiber-channel connectivity as it replaced our large legacy storage array, replacing one rack of spinning disks with 4U of flash.

One of the features that I think is useful is the support for various rollback scenarios and multi-DB support. They also pay attention to their clients, and I believe that the quality metrics feature enables us to apply rules and coding standards specific to our organization. It provides DB pipeline views for changes deployed to DB and quality checks for DB scripts, both of which aid in error detection.

  • Super-simple to use

Liquibase
  • Tracking changes through DATABASECHANGELOG table
  • Works with different DB tools (Oracle, SQL etc.)
  • Rollbacks are easier with tag if you have rollback scripts in place.
  • Comparing databases (in different environments) or their states or even creating a new data base with existing changesets.

Cons
Silk
  • Not well known, so third-party support is lacking
  • Data reduction is good, but not as good as expected (actual 2.7:1)

Liquibase
  • the build has a very tedious process - taking backup and restoring for every script to be processed
  • Error handling, many errors are left unmanaged due to which finding the root cause of the issue is difficult
  • HTML reports can be optimized for low space
  • Permissions management i.e. in case of the build is failing, permissions can be checked beforehand. rather than failing in process execution.
  • Project creation from TSV files makes it complicated

Initially the support was very informative and the onboarding process was without hindrance. But when we needed help from support while using the tool, the response was not fast and less informative on how to get past the issue, and this held up more downtime. This was not the case every time, but a little improvement on this aspect would be appreciated.

We performed a bake-off with K2 and one other vendor and they performed identically. K2 pricing was aggressive, performance was great, and it offered the features that we needed at a price that we could afford

To be honest, the option of having a free community plan to start testing in a test environment, followed by taking it in production a few months is a great way to evaluate wether or not to do the subscription based plan.

Silk
  • Installing K2 reduced runtime of one of our batch processes, freeing up one employee for other tasks.
  • Less time managing storage.

Liquibase
  • We have been able to set up CI/CD from the very start of our project because of Liquibase. This has allowed us to iterate better and move faster in our implementation.
  • Liquibase support has been extremely helpful in addressing questions and problems, requiring less time relying on scouring the internet for solutions.
  • The changelog system has made it easier for my colleagues who are not super SQL savvy to quickly implement new database changes with confidence.
