If you're a company who's been in business for a few years, and can afford a Looker license, then I wouldn't really look anywhere else. We've looked at a TON of data analytics/BI tools over the years and Looker is, by far, the best we've seen. However, that comes with a cost. If you're a new startup, Looker probably isn't appropriate for you because of the cost.

Periscope Data

If you are a technology company that is reliant of accessible data then this is the platform for you. We work with over 10,000 clients with an average of a couple hundred data point per client on any given day. If your volume of reporting and metrics is not at that level yet, it may not be as useful (or, rather, may overload you with information that distracts from your specifics). The use of charts and vanity metrics, however, is incredibly useful for everyone from sales to marketing and everything in between. It helps make data actionable

Pros

Looker

  • Incredibly advanced analytics tool that is even more capable if you learn how to use LookML which is Looker's custom programming language.
  • Quick access to the raw data that is being visualized allows you to spot check for data integrity.
  • My usage with Looker is limited because of our integration but, having seen their updates over time, the integrations with Slack, Salesforce, and other tools appear to greatly improve organizations' workflows.

Periscope Data

  • Rapid deployment of polished T-SQL-based data visualization charts and dashboards. Periscope supports a variety of database technologies, and allows users to write custom queries to display data.
  • Included caching to reduce server load.
  • Outstanding customer service/support, with expert advice as needed.
  • Constant updates and new features.
  • Built-in SQL formatters take the pain out of manipulating date/time objects.

Cons

Looker

  • Mobile viewing is HTML based, not always highly viewable.
  • Basic operations can be difficult to achieve. There is a function called table calculations which allows this.
  • Running on a single server, the entire instance can slow down if even one user schedules a large dashboard.

Periscope Data

  • Some of the dashboards can be slow to load; especially when they have lots of features and widgets.
  • The software could be made a little easier for people that don't have a data or programming background.
  • It is pricey so not a great option for small companies or research/home projects.

We've been very happy with Looker so far, and all teams in the organization are starting to see its value, and use it on a frequent basis. It has quickly become our accessible "source of truth" for all data/metrics.

It could be used easily by business users once they understand basic SQL and the dataset; they could perform customized query according to their needs, without having to ask analysts repeatedly to provide them. The support team is quite responsive, and they could also help directly to make your erroneous dashboard run smoothly.

Looker support specialists are heroes. They are knowledgeable, smart, and always vouch for your success. The availability is super quick, and even if there is no current solution for my problem, they will address it and voice it as feedback for a product.

Alternatives Considered

Looker stacks up very well against the other tools we have evaluated and used. All the tools have their own pros and cons. Looker had a better edge in terms of visualizations when we chose to use it. After several updates, other tools began to have newer features. Looker still stands competitive.

Periscope Data

Periscope is by far the best we looked at - I was evaluating as a user, not the primary decision maker, and user interface and ease of use was the primary factor in my decision. It is very easy to navigate and manipulate, and has an overall very polished view

Periscope Data

  • Positive Impact: Before Periscope Data was available to my department, I had to search through the Que in Smile Check for the cases that were low hanging fruit. Now Periscope pulls that data and that data only from those Ques and I am able to use the filters for better accuracy.
