Mailchimp

If you aren't sure about MailChimp its free service is pretty generous, so you can try it out at no cost. Also, since its totally cloud-based, its accessible anywhere you have access to an internet connection. It is extremely user-friendly, and the capabilities for data collection are extremely valuable, especially if you integrate with google analytics. It is a good service to use for first-time email marketers.

Genius is well-suited for a smaller company looking to do one-off campaigns and not necessarily needing to track within a separate system. For example, the professional version of Salesforce is probably an ideal size for Genius. For a more enterprise/larger company I wouldn't suggest Genius be used.

Pros

Mailchimp

  • Great tools to create custom invitations which stand out in a crowded field.
  • Schedule e-mail blasts so that you can set it and walk away.
  • Great analytics, which help with cleaning up databases and identifying prospects that might be overlooked by sales and marketing teams!
  • Ease of use so that anyone can create a great invitation, schedule a blast, and get the results they are striving to achieve!

  • Genius helped by giving our company easy access to social sharing tools, and a streamlined process for developing unique URL's, tracking, and an intuitive dashboard reporting system. It's well designed UX makes it easy to train new employees to use.
  • As an analytics person, data is important to me. However, website tagging can be an enormous time commitment. Genius helped by allowing our company to get client sites tagged in order to track in-depth analytics and develop more sophisticated engagement metrics.
  • Email solutions worked wonders, by automating the customized email process and including it in the same application that we use for our other marketing channels.

Cons

Mailchimp

  • Mailchimp's Help, FAQ and knowledge-base section is INCREDIBLY deep. So much so that sometimes each article or question answer leads to another one, and then another one, so much so that the actual answer you are looking for can actually seem pretty complex. That may or may not necessarily be Mailchimp's fault as it depends on what kind of answers one is looking for. And, while much of the time, the answers are very clear, I've found that occasionally some answers or articles are not necessarily so easy to understand.
  • During the entire GDPR "countdown" I found it hard to navigate what the requirements were and how I could make sure I was in compliance. I assumed that Mailchimp would have an extensive explanation of how to take care of it. While they did provide some resources, I found them not very helpful. I did reach out to their support team and all I got back was an answer directing me to the same articles that weren't clear enough to begin with. For a company that does good job of taking complicated processes and lingo and turning them into a completely doable tasks, I found the support to be lacking in this instance. Who knows wha that means for things like this in the future, but it was an example where I was not happy with the support provided.
  • This is more of a pet peeve, but when editing an email certain functions are not editable the way I wish they'd be. For example, if I want to add an image group of three pictures to an email, Mailchimp allows to choose from a few different options in how those images are laid out. Those options are not always enough. I find myself sometimes wanting more options to choose from.

  • CRM Integration - Although Genius was great at tracking individual activity, there wasn't a way to pull over specific campaign details (ie, bounces, deliverables, statistics, charts). Our end-users not participating in the direct campaign had no way of knowing the results from within Salesforce.
  • Communication - I had a difficult time contacting Genius when I had issues or questions.

We love the product. One thing we haven't mentioned yet is the human element. Recently, MailChimp re-structured their plans/pricing based on the feedback they had received. They listened to a pain their users were experiencing, then strategized a solution, and implemented it fairly. The updated pricing strategy was intended to save subscribers money, and they did a great job of communicating it to their users.I would be surprised if anyone reacted negatively to the change.

Platform replaces many of the tools we used to use, creating efficiencies. Only reason not to renew is if another product comes along with a lower price tag.

Usability

Mailchimp 9.5

Ease of use, quick setup, and the drag and drop technology. The software as a whole is pretty easy to use and has lots of templates that make the setup even faster. There isn't much complicated about Mailchimp that would require someone to have technical knowledge or extensive training

The customer support clients really know about their tool and they were able to help my with all of my questions and problems, which over the years were quite a few. They're even motivated enough to drop a funny line here and there which perfectly matches their corporate language on the website.

It was simple. We spent a limited amount of time implementing and there wasn't a huge need for extra training to get up and running.

Alternatives Considered

Mailchimp

Mailchimp was the most commonly used mail management software when I started to look, and was the first one I tried out. I used to use Outlook and manage my contacts independently, but this became quite difficult to do well, and the software has taken a lot of the actual management difficulties away from this.

Pardot is within the Salesforce CRM, so solves many issues for us as far as our employees seeing direct results. Genius is more suited for the larger, enterprise company, whereas Genius is better for a smaller team. Both are extremely efficient, just target a different business size/purpose.
