Mailchimp is well suited to a situation where you have a stable or known set of recipients to whom you will be sending email updates on a regular basis. Mailchimp is well suited to situations where a lot of information needs to be sent to a lot of different people and organizations at specified times in the future.Mailchimp is not appropriate for one-to-one communication - the higher the scale of interactions from 1 to many the better the software performs.

Swiftpage Act!

Swiftpage ACT! would be well suited if you are using a desktop computing environment. ACT! is an old product and they were on the desktop for many years (and still are). Also, ACT! would also be well suited if you are not as concerned about implementing a CRM product that might require a little more training (e.g. if you had employees/salespeople that needed to be trained). Also, ACT! seems to be more generic than some of the industry focused products you see nowadays. For example, MethodCRM works well with non-profits that are on the cloud.

  • Easy to use and updates to application have been very customer focused.
  • Love the amount of services you receive from them at absolutely no cost to you. You can add up to 2,000 subscribers for free.
  • Compatibility with our CRM and Hubspot which enables us to target our email marketing efforts.
  • Great customer service. Any time issues arose or questions needed to be addressed, their customer service team was very responsive and helpful.
  • Outstanding email analytics which allows us to measure many metrics for our email marketing campaign.

Swiftpage Act!

  • Integrated Email Marketing: For a small business, you can have a strong method to handle email marketing in an integrated non-disparate solution.
  • Tailoring: There are no limits on what data you can store in the system and the ease of making changes can be done by a nontechnical person.
  • User Interface: The tool is easy to get around in both the desktop (fat client) and (webclient) which both are quite similar in functionality.
  • Integration: The tool integrates with Word, Excel, and Outlook nicely. And, it integrates with Google Mail and Contacts. There is a nice selection of third party tools available for various needs like AddressGrabber which allows for easy input of contacts from various sources such as email signatures, webpages, etc.
  • Templates: I have enjoyed being able to store tons of various templates for letters which we use over and over for various communications like sales proposals, quotes, and nudging clients along the funnel and sales process.
  • Automation: SwiftPage ACT! has a small business automation engine which allows for reminders and workflow to be administered by the system. It's not as sophisticated as some enterprise workflow automation solutions but for the price it's an awesome addition.
  • Maintenance: Very rarely have a problem which needs to be dealt with and costs to upgrade are minimal at best. We hosted the system internally for the web client and implemented it ourselves initially but had upgrades subsequently done by a local partner simply due to time/cost scenario. In other words, less to have someone else do it.

  • Phone support. While the chat function is extremely effective, it can be helpful with certain questions to speak with someone over the phone.
  • I'd like the ability to unsubscribe someone to all campaigns. Currently, if someone unsubscribes to a campaign, they will never receive that exact campaign again. But if their email address is on multiple lists or gets added on another list by someone who is unaware that they unsubscribed, that person will receive another email. Many recipients have been angered by this, telling me that the unsubscribed - which they did - but I have to explain that the process is not universal, and sometimes we forget to include the "exclude" list.
  • The payment structure goes by the number of email addresses that are stored on Mailchimp, so to stay below a certain billing threshold, I have to periodically delete lists of stored email addresses. This gets to be cumbersome because I regularly need to delete and re-upload many of the same lists of people.

  • Not intuitive to use. I will have to contact support for help if I haven't used some functions in a while.
  • It's near impossible to delete duplicates as they have to be deleted individually. This is a problem if you have more than 5000 contacts.
  • Reporting is difficult.

The interface is really easy to use. The email editor works great and helps smooth out the issues you have when creating emails for the many different email clients out there. It's also easy to schedule and deploy emails within the platform. Email reporting is also great.

ACT follows the basic rules you would expect for this type of software, but actually doing anything sophisticated with it is near impossible without assistance or training. Unless you use it regularly it is difficult to use. I wouldn't recommend it unless you have internal IT support and it will be used regularly.

I have, in the 4+ years that I've used Mailchimp, never seen an issue that restricted the use of their software/tools. I don't know of a single time when they're system crashed or went down. I could be wrong, but I honestly haven't experienced any issues with outages, errors or unplanned downtime

I haven't noticed any slow speeds from Mailchimp or their tools. I think the landing pages load quickly and look nice. The email reports and editing operates smoothly and doesn't take time to load. Additionally, when I use Mailchimp in conjunction with Zapier + Hubspot I don't notice any drag between any of these tools

The customer support clients really know about their tool and they were able to help my with all of my questions and problems, which over the years were quite a few. They're even motivated enough to drop a funny line here and there which perfectly matches their corporate language on the website.

Following a few interactions with support staff over the phone where we failed to correct the issues we were calling about, we ended up going back to the consultant who we purchased the software through and continued to use her for support rather than call Swiftpage ACT! directly. Our consultant was much more helpful in finding and correcting our issues.

It's pretty easy to get up and running! There's a slight learning curve on a few things, but once you find where everything is located, you can import your list and send your first email. It really makes our clients feel great to see how quickly they can get that first email out.

The automation features in Mailchimp vastly outrank any other mail service I've tried so far, and seeing as we often try and teach our clients how to utilize it, I also really appreciate their deep and constantly updated tutorials and documentation. Whenever I've had an issue or problem their support staff, whether over chat or phone have been really helpful and invested in helping solve the issue.

Swiftpage Act!

Although other CRM's like HubSpot offer a free solution, I found that it didn't give much and the add-ons were very expensive. Many other companies have interfaces that are clunky or hard to understand. Also I found that many just offer way too many features that we would never use that just made it more difficult to use what we needed. The customized options are just way to expensive for the simplistic offering we need. Swiftpage ACT! just provides a solution that works for us.

Mailchimp over the years I've used it has grown in leaps and bounds. They have added so many additional features than were previously available. They are truly an all-in-one marketing platform now.If you're a small operation and just want to add email to your marketing efforts, they're there for you. If you're a larger operation and want to start sending postcard advertisements, they can do that. If you'd good with that and want to kick up your marketing by going social, you can do that on their platform. They are truly able to be as small as you need, but also get quite large in whatever it is you'd like to do through their system.

  • Its affordability keeps campaign expenditures low. For the first year of the campaign, we were able to utilize the free service which saved us about $400 on administrative costs. We have just recently upgraded to a payment plan.
  • The ease of using saved templates cuts down on staff time, and even if we decide to use a new template, customizing a template is pretty simple.
  • We have been able to raise $5,000+ from our email campaigns, and that was during the time when we weren't paying for the service.
