Considered Both Products

Chose Alteryx
Alteryx stacks up against its competitors in the marketplace because from day one its goal was to simplify and democratize data processes. Its visual nature and transparent tool set, combined with its highly addictive joy to use make it stand out from the crowd.

Chose Matillion
It's a GUI so we don't live just in the code in AWS. For what we neede alteryx wouldn't be best suited. altough as we move to more analytics focussed team it's something i will look at again.
Chose Matillion
Matillion is cheaper and we really like the customer support of Matillion as well as lerning materials provided by Matillion were far better. They also made connectors for us for free while others were charging us for it.
Chose Matillion
The out of the box connectors for various data sources especially for Salesforce is the main reason we chose Matillion in terms of source connectivity.
Aside connectors, Matillion provides some unique features like Shared jobs, Grid variables, etc that are very helpful in quick …
Chose Matillion
Matillion provided much more flexibility than the other products we tested, at a much lower price point. Other products, in my view, had a cleaner/simpler UI but I also felt that they offered much less functionality. A key design pattern we had to deliver was to perform delta …
Chose Matillion
Matillion easily integrates with Snowflake which is a huge selling point. It is also affordable fro the amount of data source connections that it comes with.
Chose Matillion
Matillion is much easier to use than the other tools that I've worked with in the past and has a more complete forward-thinking cloud strategy. Legacy ETL tools struggle to make use of modern cloud data warehouse patterns.

Alteryx Platforma is a business intelligence and data visualization software, while Matillion is an Extraction, Transformation, and Loading (ETL) tool. Matillion is used for centralizing, consolidating, and formatting data for analysis and reporting. Alteryx is used for more intensive analytics and reporting, but it also emphasizes its ETL capabilities relative to other BI tools. Given Alteryx’s broad feature set, it is more heavily used by enterprises, while Matillion has users across company sizes.

Features

Both Alteryx and Matillion have distinct strengths tailored to certain needs.

Alteryx stands out for its full-service analytics capabilities, from data extraction to visualization and modeling. Users point to a robust set of predictive analytics models for various use cases. For repeated analyses or processes, Alteryx also provides automation and macros functionality to streamline data analytics.

Matillion specializes in data centralization and preparation. In particular, it excels at extracting data from an extremely wide range of platforms, especially AWS environments and cloud-based data warehouses. It also features a very low learning curve, with greater accessibility via a drag-and-drop interface.

Limitations

While Alteryx and Matillion both have strong features, they also have some limitations.

Alteryx has struggled with more polished visualizations. Users have described limited data visualization functionality and customization. Alteryx also has limited training, which can contribute to a more difficult learning curve.

In contrast, Matillion’s ETL specialization trades off with any data analysis capabilities. Matillion does not provide post-data loading functionalities like analytics or reporting. Users have also struggled with a lack of documentation for updating the tool or tracking existing projects.

Pricing

Alteryx has two offerings, Designer and Server. Designer, the core data analytics offering, is priced at $5,195/user/year for the base license, $11,700/user/year for added location data, and $33,800/user/year for additional demographic, spatial, and segmentation data. Alteryx provides a 14 day free trial for Designer. Alteryx Server’s base price is $78,975/year for greater scalability and collaboration, plus an additional $39,000/year for additional data management and discovery functionality.

Matillion provides four packages for its ETL capabilities, priced per hour of usage. The “Medium” package, at $1.27/hr, provides 2 users and 6 environments. The “Large” package, at $2.74/hr, supports 5 concurrent users and 15 environments and clustering. The “XLarge” package, at $5.48/hr, supports 12 concurrent users and 35 environments. Enterprise package pricing is available by quote from the vendor.

We're trying right now to get more people using it at our company so we can send management documented cases for how we can expand and purchase Alteryx Server which will extend the capabilities even more and across more departments. It's been well suited for pretty much everything we do on a repeating schedule. It's worth the time to set up the workflows. When Treasury sends me the bank download now - I save it to a folder and run our workflows and send back 2 journal entries in .9 seconds. (yes - in less than a second it's finished running)

It is very well suited for ETL on the cloud. Whenever there is something that can be accomplished with no code or little code, Matillion is a good tool. However, if your pipeline requires a lot of customizations, Matillion should be avoided.

Pros
Alteryx
  • Pulling data from multiple disparate data sources.
  • Allows users to see the data at every step of the workflow to be able to cleanse, analyze, and optimize the data.
  • Provides an analytics platform that is easy for users of all levels to thrive in whether they are just starting out in their analytics journey or they have a master's degree in Data Science.

Matillion
  • We leveraged Matillion’s no-code principals to make data manipulation easy for our internal customers. People who don't know how to use SQL no longer need to. Everything in Matillion is self-explained with no or little coding.
  • We connected Matillion to our data warehouse to allow people to read raw data, transform it, then write results back to their sandbox databases. The drag and drop component design allowed customers to create complex data models at the speed of thought without any risk to production data.
  • With sharing capabilities between projects enabled, everyone was able to help each other when questions arose which instilled a strong sense of collaboration and community.

Cons
Alteryx
  • Alteryx is great for processes that is has already "thought through". It's more difficult to get Alteryx to deal with some customization.
  • The data visualizations with Alteryx are generally good, although I don't think the color schemes are the best.
  • I think the data science capabilities are awesome with Alteryx, although not as well used as products built with Python or R.

  • I think a non-CLI approach to installing and uninstalling python libraries would be nice. I mean, it isn't difficult to install a python library via Linux or CLI, but I imagine most companies don't feel comfortable allowing Matillion users to go on a virtual server and installing it themselves. Requirement.txt file for installing libraries would be simple, and maybe that could also be used to uninstall libraries as well......or maybe the library gets automatically downloaded if it is imported into a python script but the library doesn't exist.
  • Python Component is lacking very much in terms of UI. It would be unrealistic for me to suggest Matillion build its own EDI, but it would be nice if a python component could connect to a local IDE. Right now, if you want to write any decent length python code, you are going to be stuck copying and pasting your code from your local IDE.
  • It is also very difficult to debug in Matillion because you can't set breakpoints. Local IDE integration can resolve that.
  • I would like to have more templates to copy from for certain simplistic scenarios. For instance, a template for a job that fails which sends an AWS SNS with the Job name, component it failed on, and the error message. It wasn't as simple as I thought it would be to figure out and having to use a shared job for such circumstances can be painful because you have to export a bunch of variables.
  • There should be a drop down list for Global Matillion variables as it is difficult to remember at times.

Alteryx
We've developed a working partnership with Alteryx. As an enablement suite, we're continuing to innovate and deliver great products with use of Alteryx in our solutions. Alteryx use expands to our global product development teams and is in use in multiple parts of our organization. Alteryx also delivers Experian demographic content to other clients in their product offering. We're highly likely to renew, but that decision is way above my pay grade.

With the current experience of Matillion, we are likely to renew with the current feature option but will also look for improvement in various areas including scalability and dependability. 1. Connectors: It offers various connectors option but isn't full proof which we will be looking forward as we grow. 2. Scalability: As usage increase, we want Matillion system to be more stable.

Usability
Alteryx
I've found that while some things might take a little longer to create, the flexibility of Alteryx allows you to perform any function needed. I haven't found a use that was not available in Alteryx yet. APIs and XMLs can be created to perform certain functions. In addition, CMD line commands can be sent using Alteryx to perform certain functions as well.

Matillion
It has been easy to train new employees who don't have previous experience with Matillion. It is quite self-explanatory. There are quite a few things that can be done with Python, however, we have not really looked into this feature much but likely will do in the future. Mostly, it is drag and drop of components and environments can be set up so easy to set up connections as well.

Reliability and Availability
Alteryx
I use many programs and compared to others, Alteryx virtually never goes down, freezes up or gives an application error. Over a 4 year time period that I have used this program, any of these may have happened 3 times. It is an incredibly stable program that I feel completely confident in.

Performance
Alteryx
Alteryx is an extremely reliable platform. If there is an error in my workflow, I feel pretty strongly it was probably my fault. The platform also handles large amounts of data very quickly and can join/match, sort, filter, calculate on that data quickly as well. One of my favorite things to build into a workflow are the messages based on data/metadata and error messages based on errors I have come across before.

Support Rating
Alteryx
Stellar, bar-none. Some of the best support folks of any vendor. The Alteryx Community is the most responsive and supportive. On the rare occasion of a release issue or bug, we've been able to get quick help to solve the core problem. Alteryx does not play the blame game. They genuinely help the users solve their issues or respond to questions

Matillion
Overall, I've found Matillion to be responsive and considerate. I feel like they value us as a customer even when I know they have customers who spend more on the product than we do. That speaks to a motive higher than money. They want to make a good product and a good experience for their customers. If I have any complaint, it's that support sometimes feels community-oriented. It isn't always immediately clear to me that my support requests are going to a support engineer and not to the community at large. Usually, though, after a bit of conversation, it's clear that Matillion is watching and responding. And responses are generally quick in coming.

There is really not much to it (the installation, that is). Once you get it installed, along with any of the add-ons (demographics, R, etc.), you are up and running almost immediately. There is really no additional setup. You can immediately begin blending data, running demographics, performing spatial queries, running predictive analysis, etc. And for many of these functions, the learning curve is quite easy.

Alternatives Considered
Alteryx
Alteryx is MUCH more user friendly. both provide the ability to code within them, but Alteryx has much nicer interface. The formula tools have a more simple language that is easier to learn than formulae in SSIS. Alteryx is easy to read with multi colored tools identifying what each one does. It also allows for macros. You can build your own tool to process records of data or batch records together.

Matillion
Matillion ran circles around Stitch and Striim both in functionality, setup, and performance. There was no real comparison. Fivetran massively outperforms Matillion in pretty much every facet of the production from setup, maintenance, visibility, and usability. It already has the ability to connect any data source to a destination regardless of database type. Why we chose Matillion over Fivetran is that, for our current needs, Matillion provides us with the functionality that we need and a much more competitive price for a smaller company.

Scalability
Alteryx
Individual analysts can quickly generate results using their own copy of Alteryx Designer. But using the Server and developing macros for more complex needs can be time consuming.

I have been able to connect Matillion to AWS Aurora Databases, MySQL databases, Rest APIs, Files in AWS S3, etc. Being able to load all of that disparate data into one datalake has made data mining and reporting a lot simpler. I wish everything could be implemented as easily as Matillion.

Return on Investment
Alteryx
  • Error handling - allows controls to be built into workflows easily and allows them to be isolated and spat into control reports that can be easily reviewed and audited, thanks to the ability to create multiple outputs in one go.
  • Time-saving - saved huge amounts of time, especially when moving Excel processes into Alteryx.
  • Product development - allowed my firm to create products that we have been able to market and sell to clients.

  • Saving us time reduces our need for headcount
  • Allows us to collaborate on data-eng pipelines in a transparent way with non-technical stakeholders, ensuring accuracy and continuity
  • Allows us a single platform to log and manage all of our pipelines to pin-point where something failed and why
  • Always has a solution to very common data engineering tasks, i.e., real-time data, connectors, pre-built workflows, etc.
