Considered Both Products
Matillion
Chose Matillion
Matillion is much easier to set up and easier to work for the team. Offers a lot more connections which are easier to set up. Environment variables make it easy to set up once and job creation is easy. We use Metadata tables to just loop through the list of tables that need to …
Chose Matillion
If you take the time to build your own with Matillion, you will end up with a vastly better solution than Stitch and Fivetran. We ran Stitch and Fivetran side by side connected from our source DB to both RedShift and Snowflake and documented the performance results as well as …
Chose Matillion
Matillion provided much more flexibility than the other products we tested, at a much lower price point. Other products, in my view, had a cleaner/simpler UI but I also felt that they offered much less functionality. A key design pattern we had to deliver was to perform delta …
Chose Matillion
Matillion is fully designed for AWS Cloud products, and aligned with AWS Redshift data integration perfectly.
Chose Matillion
Matillion is the best alternative for on-premise ETL tools if you are looking for a cloud-only solution. None of the tools we evaluated provide same features offered by Matillion. Extensive technical documentation is available on the website which makes development easy and …
Chose Matillion
1. Cloud Solution
2. Easy to create and manage ELT pipelines.
3. Works great with redshift databases.
Chose Matillion
Generally, Matillion is much easier to get up and running, quicker to deliver value and returns on your ELT process, and simpler to maintain. The speed to get data connections and start pulling data is so quick that you can focus on the transformations and business rules …
Chose Matillion
Matillion is easier to set up and use. Works well for cloud data warehouses. Falls short when legacy application connectors are required, this is where Talend and Informatica have the upper hand.
Chose Matillion
In this company, we went through review of other products that work with Redshift. We have used Talend as the previous ETL tool.
Chose Matillion
Talend has a much steeper learning curve. SnapLogic was too expensive but had the best set of features. We did not try Pentaho but that was next on our list.
Chose Matillion
Being a fairly new player in the market, Matillion is coming up against some well-established names such as Pentaho and Talend. The primary benefit for our use case was the fact that Matillion is built specifically for Amazon Redshift. While Pentaho and Talend are more mature …
Chose Matillion
We evaluated Fivetran, TreasureData, StitchData and few other options. But only with Matillion did we have the option of a cloud-based ETL solution that we were able to host within the APAC-Sydney region to ensure our data stays within our region.

Matillion and Talend Data Integration are both data integration tools. Matillion specializes in ETL for cloud-based warehouses. Talend differentiates by offering a free open source version of its data integration platform. Talend is more commonly used at the enterprise level, with a larger focus on big data integration,  while Matillion’s cloud focus is gives it functionality across company sizes.

Features

Both Matillion and Talend provide a variety of features for data integration.

Matillion offers a robust Extraction, Transformation, and Loading (ETL) capability. Users highlight its ability to centralize and structure data from a wide range of platforms and cloud environments, particularly AWS applications. Matillion’s focus on cloud-based data warehouses makes it ideal for this use case.

Talend differentiates with its free open source data quality management and integration software, which can be used for simple use cases. At larger scale, Talend also provides a high degree of customizable connectors between different system, including custom-built connectors.

Limitations

Talent and Matillion also both have some limitations to their offerings.

Matillion’s users have struggled to create and utilize the platform’s documentation for updates and project management. This issue is particularly pronounced when implementing or integrating Git.

Talend’s free version is extremely limited for most users. Many ETL tasks quickly scale beyond the technical functionality of the free version, requiring paid upgrades. Talend also struggles with utilizing Git, particularly in the free version of the software.

Pricing

Matillion provides four packages for its ETL capabilities, priced per hour of usage. The “Medium” package, at $1.27/hr, provides 2 users and 6 environments. The “Large” package, at $2.74/hr, supports 5 concurrent users and 15 environments and clustering. The “XLarge” package, at $5.48/hr, supports 12 concurrent users and 35 environments. Enterprise package pricing is available by quote from the vendor.

Talend offers four products around data integration. Data Quality and Data Integration are available in open source versions. There are also Data Integration Entry Level and a Data Management Platform package. The former includes more advanced integration features, and the Data Management Platform includes advanced data profiling and quality governance. Pricing is available by quote from the vendor.

Matillion
It is very well suited for ETL on the cloud. Whenever there is something that can be accomplished with no code or little code, Matillion is a good tool. However, if your pipeline requires a lot of customizations, Matillion should be avoided.

Pros
Matillion
  • We leveraged Matillion’s no-code principals to make data manipulation easy for our internal customers. People who don't know how to use SQL no longer need to. Everything in Matillion is self-explained with no or little coding.
  • We connected Matillion to our data warehouse to allow people to read raw data, transform it, then write results back to their sandbox databases. The drag and drop component design allowed customers to create complex data models at the speed of thought without any risk to production data.
  • With sharing capabilities between projects enabled, everyone was able to help each other when questions arose which instilled a strong sense of collaboration and community.

  • We used Talend to ETLing the data from myriad sources such Oracle Database, Clarify, Salesforce, Sugar CRM, SQL DB, MQ, Stibo Step, FTP, Netezza, and Files.
  • We leverage Talend transformation capabilities for stitching the data , unions and join
  • We successfully created the final unified set that can be used by business

Cons
Matillion
  • I think a non-CLI approach to installing and uninstalling python libraries would be nice. I mean, it isn't difficult to install a python library via Linux or CLI, but I imagine most companies don't feel comfortable allowing Matillion users to go on a virtual server and installing it themselves. Requirement.txt file for installing libraries would be simple, and maybe that could also be used to uninstall libraries as well......or maybe the library gets automatically downloaded if it is imported into a python script but the library doesn't exist.
  • Python Component is lacking very much in terms of UI. It would be unrealistic for me to suggest Matillion build its own EDI, but it would be nice if a python component could connect to a local IDE. Right now, if you want to write any decent length python code, you are going to be stuck copying and pasting your code from your local IDE.
  • It is also very difficult to debug in Matillion because you can't set breakpoints. Local IDE integration can resolve that.
  • I would like to have more templates to copy from for certain simplistic scenarios. For instance, a template for a job that fails which sends an AWS SNS with the Job name, component it failed on, and the error message. It wasn't as simple as I thought it would be to figure out and having to use a shared job for such circumstances can be painful because you have to export a bunch of variables.
  • There should be a drop down list for Global Matillion variables as it is difficult to remember at times.

  • Pricing for sure can be the area for improvement.
  • Real time processing is slow as compared to other tools like Abinitio.
  • While developing batches, it crashes a lot. It may be the issue with me, but I wanted to highlight it.

With the current experience of Matillion, we are likely to renew with the current feature option but will also look for improvement in various areas including scalability and dependability. 1. Connectors: It offers various connectors option but isn't full proof which we will be looking forward as we grow. 2. Scalability: As usage increase, we want Matillion system to be more stable.

Usability
Matillion
It has been easy to train new employees who don't have previous experience with Matillion. It is quite self-explanatory. There are quite a few things that can be done with Python, however, we have not really looked into this feature much but likely will do in the future. Mostly, it is drag and drop of components and environments can be set up so easy to set up connections as well.

We use Talend Data Integration day in and day out. It is the best and easiest tool to jump on to and use. We can build a basic integration super-fast. We could build basic integrations as fast as within the hour. It is also easy to build transformations and use Java to perform some operations.

Support Rating
Matillion
Overall, I've found Matillion to be responsive and considerate. I feel like they value us as a customer even when I know they have customers who spend more on the product than we do. That speaks to a motive higher than money. They want to make a good product and a good experience for their customers. If I have any complaint, it's that support sometimes feels community-oriented. It isn't always immediately clear to me that my support requests are going to a support engineer and not to the community at large. Usually, though, after a bit of conversation, it's clear that Matillion is watching and responding. And responses are generally quick in coming.

Good support, specially when it relates to PROD environment. The support team has access to the product development team. Things are internally escalated to development team if there is a bug encountered. This helps the customer to get quick fix or patch designed for problem exceptions. I have also seen support showing their willingness to help develop custom connector for a newly available cloud based big data solution

Matillion
Matillion ran circles around Stitch and Striim both in functionality, setup, and performance. There was no real comparison. Fivetran massively outperforms Matillion in pretty much every facet of the production from setup, maintenance, visibility, and usability. It already has the ability to connect any data source to a destination regardless of database type. Why we chose Matillion over Fivetran is that, for our current needs, Matillion provides us with the functionality that we need and a much more competitive price for a smaller company.

In comparison with the other ETLs I used, Talend is more flexible than Data Services (where you cannot create complex commands). It is similar to Datastage speaking about commands and interfaces. It is more user-friendly than ODI, which has a metadata point of view on its own, while Talend is more classic. It has both on-prem and cloud approaches, while Matillion is only cloud-based.

Scalability
Matillion
I have been able to connect Matillion to AWS Aurora Databases, MySQL databases, Rest APIs, Files in AWS S3, etc. Being able to load all of that disparate data into one datalake has made data mining and reporting a lot simpler. I wish everything could be implemented as easily as Matillion.
