Micro Focus SiteScope

SiteScope is definitely well suited in an HP server environment. It is also well suited for virtual server environments. It is also well suited for those who are happy with email and text based message alerting. It may not be appropriate in other environments where monitoring physical components is critical. Because HP SiteScope does not monitor certain physical components, it does fall short of being able to be a "one stop shop solution" in regard to monitoring. It is not well suited for those looking for logic in how alerts are sent and cascade to other people or groups.

Zabbix

Zabbix is probably the best classical monitoring software out there that is also FOSS. It is superior to Nagios and other similar software from implementation to utilization, and equal in capabilities. It is equally capable to SolarWinds (and competitors), and more expandable (thanks to the support of user-generated XML templates), but at the cost of time, knowledge, and effort. It serves a different market than pure cloud monitoring solutions, though they do overlap heavily, so it probably is not as well suited to cloud-only monitoring (though it can be set up to work effectively in this role as well). However, given the flexibility of on-prem monitoring as well, it can be an option in conjunction with, or in place of the cloud-only monitoring if that is a need.Overall, I would put Zabbix on par with SolarWinds and the main differentiator is where are the costs going to be paid - in end-user training and support of Zabbix or in the commercial, ease of use provided by SolarWinds (and competitors).

Pros

Micro Focus SiteScope

  • All the infrastructure monitoring things are preexisting and we don't need to set up anything additional when using HP Sitescope. We have monitors for ps, CPU, etc., for our application.
  • HP Sitescope can also run the custom scripts in our servers and send an alert based on the output. For example, we are running one custom script with HP sitescope to monitor large size files and send an alert if they exceed the threshold.
  • Sitescope will have logs as well which can then be forwarded to splunk to draw graphs in splunk for the dashboard. For example, ps is very expensive in splunk and it was disabled. So we are sending that stat from HP sitescope and have a splunk dashboard to show the memory of that process over time.

Zabbix

  • Zabbix is able to provide us a single pane of glass for monitoring. It can handle Systems, Database, Network and application level alerts and send those alerts to the appropriate parties.
  • Zabbix graphs all metrics that come in. This means it's easy to spot trends and create alerts based on when those trends cross user-defined thresholds.
  • Zabbix allows for the escalation of issues. If someone sleeps through an alert in the middle of the night, it can easily be escalated to the next tier.

Cons

Micro Focus SiteScope

  • The tool doesn't have much visibility for JavaScript heavy web pages for URL monitors.
  • The Java version to run the tool has issues sometimes with running the application.
  • The reporting function needs some improvement.

Zabbix

  • The first time that you use Zabbix, it may not be immediately obvious where everything is or how to find exactly what you want, but I think that it's UI is constantly improving with each new release. Training is also a great resource to resolve these types of problems.
  • While Zabbix allows in-depth customization of alerts to various applications (such as Slack, HipChat, Mattermost, or even SMS, etc.), I would love to see these options as built-in upon installation.
  • I have personally never found the "Maps" feature of Zabbix incredibly useful as I find it complicated to configure, but I should probably investigate its documentation further.

It is free. It didn't cost anything to implement (other than my time and the cost incurred for it) and it is filling a badly needed gap in our IT infrastructure. Support is available if we have issues and can be done annually or paid for on a per incident basis as needed. Expansion, updates, and all other future lifecycle activities are likewise free of cost, so as long as someone is able to implement/maintain the software (and the OSS project is maintained) then I imagine the company will never leave it.

We didn't have to use professional support services for Zabbix yet, so I don't have an opinion on that specifically. What I can say is, as I described before, that the Zabbix community is very active and very helpful. It's just a matter of finding the right information for your questions and you'll be fine.

We are a mainly Windows environment, so it would be useful if we could have used Active Directory to deploy agents. As of version 4.2, Zabbix has announced a new agent MSI file to allow exactly that. Unfortunately, we didn't have that option. Also, for Linux and MAC deployments, there is no simple way to deploy that. Using remote scripts you may be able to create something, but most places will opt for either SNMP (agentless) or manual installation of agents to add to Zabbix. A way of deploying agents via discovery would go a long way to helping in the adoption of the tool.

Alternatives Considered

Micro Focus SiteScope

As far as the interface goes Solarwinds is much prettier and intuitive but it is also a very busy interface which makes navigation difficult at times. Also setting up alerting under Solarwinds requires you access the desktop of the machine running the application whereas SiteScope does not. The Alerting is also much more difficult to setup correctly on SolarWInds where SiteScope is a breeze.

Zabbix

Zabbix had the best support for the devices I initially had in my network, its ability to adapt and change has made it my Swiss Army knife of monitoring tools. While it could benefit greatly from a moderated zabbix community, its support from the open source community has filled the whole rather well.

Return on Investment

Micro Focus SiteScope

  • Checking processes using a ps command and other indexing steps is very expensive in splunk.
  • Infrastructure monitoring is no more an issue for our company after getting HP sitescope.

Zabbix

  • By integrating Zabbix with Rundeck, we have been able to auto-resolve issues in our infrastructure which means lesser on-call alerts.
  • Zabbix and PagerDuty let us response to business critical issues instantly.
  • Zabbix dashboards and screens let us get an insight into the status of our infrastructure visually.
