If you are opening a shop and you need software to get the ball rolling compared to Google. Microsoft is the go-to vendor in my opinion. You can get your active directory services, mail, and collaboration tools like teams and offices from one vendor. Anyone with minimal knowledge of IT can actually configure all of these services to get you up to speed. The product is very versatile so in the future if you would like to have cloud servers and services this product have you covered. As your organization grows you can easily integrate the best MFA solutions with Azure AD to keep your organization safe. This is not the product that you should invest in if your organization does not have that many windows devices. For instance, if your company owns Macs other than products like MS Office, Share Point, etc you don't need to get Azure active directory.

Scenarios, where it's best suited, are when the number of users is 100 or less or has an On-prem AD, if the userbase is more than that and you would like to sync it with Azure AD in the cloud, it doesn't work. The setup guide doesn't cover all aspects of the setup and its slight confusion, the video format of the setup guide is nowhere to be found.

    Pros

    Azure Active Directory

    • Conditional Access -- this is one of the biggest tools that any admin needs when it comes to securing when, where, and how users are accessing information. Especially if the information contains sensitive data types.
    • Multi-factor Authentication -- we have all our employees configured for MFA. This is incredibly easy to configure with Azure, as well as defining when MFA should be used through Conditional Access.
    • Audit Logs -- being able to track and identify a user's activity is pretty critical, especially when in incident response mode.

    • The product is very easy to set up. This took less than two hours to implement.
    • We were able to assist get the users all set up and onboard using the product in less than 20 minutes for their users.
    • The phone app for this is very easy to use and was free.

    Cons

    Azure Active Directory

    • The UI can be cumbersome to use - bulk edits for instance are best handled using powershell.
    • Documentation can be hard to find when integrating AD into web apps
    • Some settings in AD can be confusing with no obvious explanation - for instance, setting up custom scopes for an application is confusing.

    WatchGuard AuthPoint

    • Java/OpenJDK components hog memory for the AuthPoint gateway server
    • Push notifications to need to have a number matching/login context (i.e. login location map screenshot) to discourage users from just pressing approve without paying attention
    • The process for adding/extending license counts is clunky and has to be updated in 2 areas manually
    • Unable to use text message/phone call option when implementing MFA for WatchGuard SSLVPN client (more of an issue with VPN client software)
    • Windows login MFA could use some improvements

WatchGuard AuthPoint is very user friendly, with minimal interaction needed to both set it up, and to maintain it's continued use. The log in interface is easily understood, with clear and easily understood icons to allow for different methods of authentication. The WatchGuard team is constantly improving their Login app, which is constantly improving the user interface, allowing for a smoother and quicker login process.

Microsoft has offered Azure Active Directory as a solution for a couple of decades now, so they have seen and anticipated almost any issue that an organization may face and can therefore help. The cloud offering of Azure Active Directory offers some additional "self healing" or monitoring services that can minimize the need for a service call. However, as with most large companies supporting a fast growing market, there may be some gaps in service knowledge (and particularly processing) from the front line / tier one staff as they follow a corporate script at first contact.

It was an Onsite demo at the ditributor with the benefits of Watchguard Authpoint. Was very nice to see the abilities of the product. This Demo was a few years back, since then Authpoint changed allot. It is very nice for partners that you can get this demo without any aditional cost.

You can use this for the Watchguard Partner Program which can give you aditional benefits. Every now and then you have a webinar that discusses multiple Watchguard products.

the first time it takes more effort. It is helpful to already understand how each authentication type works. Then it's much easier to understand the MFA solution that you implement. It is useful to check the release notes from time to time and update the key parts of the Watchguard Authpoint. Authpoint Gateway, Logon App, RDWeb... Also, it's useful to set up notifications when something goes wrong or sometimes check the statistics of how many requests are being approved/denied, etc.

    Alternatives Considered

    Azure Active Directory

In our particular scenario, we chose [Microsoft] Azure Active Directory because it has integration with tools and applications we use on a day to day basis, such as inTune, Autopilot, Office 365, Exchange Online, Dynamics 365, just to named a few.

We use DUO Mobile for our other MFA (i.e., Remote Desktop for Windows.) WatchGuard offers instructions on how to set up MFA with DUO, however, the WatchGuard AuthPoint setup was much simpler, so we opted to go that route. We are planning on looking into switching everything to WatchGuard AuthPoint, however, it's not a high priority at this time.

    Return on Investment

    Azure Active Directory

    • It has helped us evaluate our future in the cloud as we plan to migrate
    • It allows us to scale down our on-premise infrastructure resulting in cost-savings
    • It has put a bigger workload on some, adding to statement of work, in terms of evaluation
    Anonymous | TrustRadius Reviewer

    WatchGuard AuthPoint

    • Integration with current Azure AD and LDAP is important as it saves the users from creating a new account and password to remember for yet another website/product.
    • The cost of a user license is nothing compared to the cost of data loss or a company network breach. It secures our devices and data in cases of theft or breaches. Theft of a device, data, or even worse a breach would cost the company thousands to millions of dollars.
    • A negative impact is that the users lose about 10-30 seconds with every login or unlock of their computer. However, this is necessary for MFA security.
