Microsoft Defender ATP

It would be well suited in an environment where most all your endpoints are Windows-based computers, as Windows Defender is already built into the operating system, so there is no client to have to worry about installing. It also will make the management of endpoints easier on the server side, if most all machines are Windows-based.It might be less of ideal solution if a company/organization were looking for something more robust, or had a lot more features/configuration settings. It also might be less ideal for a company/organization that was looking for a product that didn't have a high detection rate of false positives

SentinelOne

Due to the low administrative overhead, SentinelOne is a good solution for companies with smaller staffs who may not have dedicated security resources. EDR capabilities are not as extensive as some other products but basic information is available an unless you have sufficient resources to evaluate data, additional data may not be valuable. SentinelOne offers a very good blend of data and automatic remediation and protection.

Pros

Microsoft Defender ATP

  • Low impact on computer performance.
  • Easy-to-use interface.
  • Several settings that help you customize the software.

SentinelOne

  • Prior to the use of SentinelOne, my staff spent on average 4 hours a week fixing/rebuilding computers that were infected. We now spend less than 30 minutes each week. That is a direct saving of both regular and IT staff time.
  • Simple straight forward portal controls all aspects of SentinelOne with good alerting for my staff if issues arise.
  • Easy touchless testing and deploy of new version to our staff where ever they work.

Cons

Microsoft Defender ATP

  • Deployment: We've had some issues deploying, especially outside of the Windows environment.
  • Offboarding: There is currently no way to delete a computer. They disappear over time. We even renamed a computer, and it kept both the old and new name in there. Eventually, the older machines do go away, but there is no manual way to do this at the moment.

SentinelOne

  • Deep dive search is hit or miss.
  • Using Vigilance (vendor provided MSSP) was frustrating as they did not inform us how they reach solutions.

Compared to all the other major players, SentinelOne is truly hands off. One installed, the tool is able to manage all the major threats on my endpoints without intervention. The biggest thing the IT Dept has to do now is just clear the incidents after SentinelOne has dealt with them. Every other tool I have used requires significantly more effort to maintain.

I gave it a 7 out of 10 as I feel that there is still a lot of room for improvement. I remember how back in the day the software was looked down upon because of it being an unreliable and inefficient antivirus. But, Microsoft has really put in the hard work and made it worthy for it to be comparable to all the other security services out there.

Their support is good and quick to respond. The one issue we faced was when a non-protection issue arose there was a lot of dancing around trying to figure things out. This was frustrating as it took significantly longer to figure out issues. Lots of repetitive log gathers, screen caps, uninstalls that never seemed to resolve issues. Eventually, the product would be updated and the issue seemed to be resolved, but seemed to be the only solution.

Alternatives Considered

Microsoft Defender ATP

MS ATP is lower on system resources and enables us to stretch out our endpoint hardware for an additional year. Also, MS ATP being an MS product fits in very nicely into MS remote management software and MS operating system. We have had little to no issues when hotfixes and roll updates are deployed, unlike 3rd party AV providers that we had experience with in the past.

SentinelOne

SentinelOne had all of the major features that we were looking for. The other products either required too much administrative attention or were lacking key features. For example, one could be uninstalled by the end user. We required that the installation be password protected to protect against end user disabling or uninstalling. One product required manual intervention for all remediation which put to high a burden on limited staff. All products are always being revised so these may no longer be issues but they had a significant impact on our decision.

Return on Investment

Microsoft Defender ATP

  • A positive impact has been to increase productivity for IT staff, as it saves them time from having to install/configure clients on every endpoint.
  • Another positive impact has been on the user/client side, as it helps the user to increase their productivity with working on their computer, as the Windows Defender client uses little resources to run on the system, and has a tendecy to not slowdown systems

SentinelOne

  • I do not worry about endpoints if they have SentinelOne installed
  • Endpoint management is virtually hands off, freeing our IT staff to focus on other matters
  • News updates from SentinelOne keep me informed of what is going on and as a result I consider them a trusted resource
