Microsoft Office 365

I strongly recommend Microsoft Office 365, for those companies that are starters or if they're looking for a collaborative Microsoft Suite to reduce deployment times, and stressful management, Office 365 can allow you to run your mail accounts, shared cloud Files and, IM communication, track down the usage of information and leverage the process of delivering to your teams the development of company process. Remember is a great tool if you got a decent Internet Service Provider, if not you'll need another on premise solution to avoid sync issues or data disruptions.

WordPerfect Office

For some reason, WordPerfect seems to be popular in law offices, at least in my part of the country. I imagine this has to do with its relative ease of use when preparing documents, and the wide availability of forms for legal documents (although I suspect that any forms that are available in WordPerfect are also available in Word and other formats).

Pros

Microsoft Office 365

  • It opens and edits the vast majority of file formats given to us for our education.
  • It's widely used and relatively easy to learn if you've never been exposed to it before.
  • The additional web accessibility is handy for getting some cloud-based documents and emails while away from my computer.

WordPerfect Office

  • WordPerfect has kept many of the same features for the past 20 years. It can even open documents made 20 years ago. Large documents are opened easily.
  • WordPerfect has a ton of formatting options. It is fairly easy to format items and lets you see the code that it is using to format, which does make changes easy.
  • WordPerfect comes built in with exporting to MS Word and PDF among many others. This is a nice addition since not many people have WordPerfect.

Cons

Microsoft Office 365

  • I use process flowcharts frequently as a consultant. I have not found a useful Microsoft app to provide this capability that helps produce a professional result. Smart Art is quite limited.
  • Screen capture is limited with tools such as "Snip". I'm forced to use third-party tools such as SnagIt. I use image capture every day to create training materials and reports.
  • Creating documents with an Index and reference paragraphs I find difficult to use.

WordPerfect Office

  • My main gripe with WordPerfect concerns the Reveal Codes function. There have been times when I am working with a document that contains a hard page break and there is no real way to remove it. Attempting to adjust these settings with the Reveal Codes function is nigh impossible.
  • Unlike Word, there doesn't seem to be any sort of online community of users comparing notes and exchanging advice for solving common problems. This makes it difficult to fix things like the Reveal Codes problem discussed above. When I first encountered this issue (and the second time...) I ran an online search to see if others had the same problem and how they may have addressed it. There were very few results and the ones I did find were several years old. So, this is one downside of WordPerfect being a far less popular application than its competitor.
  • This might be a nitpick, but WordPerfect has a function for opening PDFs, which I find to be pretty useless, especially when Adobe software is designed specifically for this and is widely available. I never use WordPerfect to open PDFs, unless it is on accident.

There are many features of Office that we cannot replicate in any other tool. Plus people know it already. It's not going away anytime soon.

I would rather use Microsoft Word but since the conversion isn't flawless we are stuck using WordPerfect.

Alternatives Considered

Microsoft Office 365

Office 365 is the industry standard, so much easier to use in the business world. It is more robust than the competition and is a mature product. GSuite may have an edge in user experience on smaller mobile devices, but that is changing. Personally, Guite's email interface and functionality are much better than the one in Microsoft Office 365. The concept of putting things in folders is a bit outdated, and the searchability in GSuite is superior.

WordPerfect Office

I have used Microsoft Office extensively as well as Google's suite of office products. I think that Microsoft is more versatile overall; from Powerpoint to Excel to Word, as well as Outlook, it has the whole office pretty much covered. WordPerfect is a very strong word processor and great for everyday use, but I don't think it could replace Excel, despite its useful tables function. I don't know if WordPerfect has an email application, so I can't compare that to Word, but we use WordPerfect side by side with the rest of the Microsoft Office suite.

Return on Investment

Microsoft Office 365

  • Gaining features such as cloud-hosted emails has had a dramatically positive impact, allowing us to reference email no matter where we are.
  • As we use more cloud-sharing features, we're running into less version conflicts and "read only" prompts when someone has a document open.
  • Overall, it's continued to make us more efficient.

WordPerfect Office

  • WordPerfect has made it possible to continue to update a 20 year old document and keep it viable.
  • It is foreseeable that eventually documents will be able to be converted to MSWord flawlessly and this would be a great bonus, but currently it is a downfall; one that keeps us using WordPerfect although.
